how do the latest WHO/DYLAN cd's stack up against ABB?

I just picked up the WHO disc yesterday and gone through it a few times. It's not as rockin' as I'd hoped it'd be, but it does have alot of good stuff.

Just curious how everyone feels this album compares in quality to A BIGGER BANG, as they are the last 2 of the big 60's bands still around. Also, throw in the new DYLAN for comparison too.

not a who fan...can't/won't comment on that one, but MT slays ABB, IMO.

A bigger bang is the best of the bunch. EW doesn't rock and I am not a Dylan fan.

I like all 3, but would rank them like this:

1. Modern Times - Classic! 5+ stars

(big gap)

2. ABB - return form but not quite among The Stones best. 3.5 stars
3. Endless Wire - better than I expected. 3 stars

1. A Bigger Bang - killer album. one for the books.
2. Modern Times - equally impressive, but i'm a sucker for Dylan.
3. Endless Wire - slightly disappointing, but enjoyable. IMO, needed more rockers on it...

I hate to say it, but I'm underwhelmed with MODERN TIMES. The last great thing Dylan did was "Dignity" on Greatest Hits Volume Three. A few good songs since, but nothing classic. I love the Stones, but felt A BIGGER BANG was no where near as strong as VOODOO LOUNGE or BRIDGES TO BABYLON despite a few excellent tracks. I will say this much for Townsend and Daltrey, they didn't pander to reunion expectations and re-record thinly disguised versions of their greatest hits. The disc really felt like a natural progression from Pete's most recent work and there is a thread running through it all. I would place it above MODERN TIMES, but just under A BIGGER BANG. Overall, The Who's disc is more consistent than The Stones, but The Stones have a few gems up their sleeves that The Who didn't on the first couple of listens anyway. Howver my vote for best of the year goes to Ray Davies' OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES which didn't get much attention and was far better than it had a right to be based on the little that Davies has turned out since abandoning The Kinks ten years ago. Rock 'n' Roll aging gracefully and with "Run Away From Time" and "Over My Head," Davies proved he could still write phenomenal pop-rock that should be all over the radio but won't be.

On initial listening it was Dylan, Stones then Who.....

On repeated listenings The Who album has more to offer than the other two.

Being a longstanding fan of The Who I was hoping for a LOUD rocking Who album. What we got was in effect two disinct sets of songs ....half "typical" Who and the other half a more acoustic feel.

I suggest that you all give The Who album a few more listens....you might be impressed!

ABB

In other words, ABB comes a poor 35th compared to the first two. Sorry.

Dylan and the Stones did a great job on their last albums . Pete Townshend is okay , but why do he and Roger Daltrey put out a Who album if half of the band is dead? I have heard five songs of the album and i have to say that the record is completely ridiculous and embarrassing. The Who have, with all respect, not the slightest chance against the Stones or Dylan.

ABB, not a great Stones LP but has some gems, Laugh I nearly died is one of my all time favs

Modern Times, enjoyable but really overrated, it is really just rehashed blues.

Endless Wire, I have only listened to it twice but don't really have any desire to listen to it again, quite boring

1. Dylan (9.5/10) Killer album, just like TOOM or L&T.
2. ABB (5.5/10) 2-3 great tunes, 4-5 decent ones, the rest weak/bad filler. Give me VL or B2B anytime.
3. The Who (5/10) See ABB

Modern Times is too much like the previous two Dylan albums; good music, but, to me, just not original enough to rate with them.

I won't buy the Who's album, not too interested.

ABB still gets a lot of play.

1. ABB

I alwasys loved the Who
but the new album is rubbish. Some songs sound like bad outtakes from
Tommy or Who's Next

I can say nothing about Dylan, play it only one time.

Modern Times by a margin....

Didn't bother listen to the new Who as I've only ever liked about two or three of their songs so far - one of them being a brilliant cover of Summertime Blues (Shame, Stones never did this one)

...and ABB is a f*cking classic

rehashed blues, eh? I've got a bunch of "boring" Muddy Waters albums too. He was another terrible blues rehasher....

never released before, of course, but assume you heard the '78 Woodstock rehearsals when the Stones did ST Blues? It cooked....

I agree with you completely on this. On first listen, it was not what I expected, but I gave it a few more listens and it has really grown on me. Over the weekend I saw both of their shows at the Hollywood Bowl
and got to see them do 11 of the new songs live each night. I give them a lot of credit for putting that many new songs in each night even though a good percentage of the crowd wants the same over warhorses again.

DOH!

No - must plead guilty to this one - where to find? ;-)

And what do you mean scumbag - of course, the Stones cooked ;-) (but from a band I don't really like - the Who - they do a great job on it - and I've always loved PT's interviews - drunken old sod)

I like ABB a lot in fact I bought it twice, couse I got the dvd 1 as well

I love MT his best for years,I originally bought it off a Russian site cheap liked it so much I bought the deluxe version with dvd

I think Ew is a very poor album, from such a notable artist I did buy it but returned it to the place I bought it from, someone recomended the Killers so I bought sam's town instead, much better on the ear

I love both Dylan and the Who's Left, but ABB wins big time!

Both ABB and Endless Wire are very good. Didn't like Endless Wire at first but it got better the more I listened to it. It's hard to compare ABB and Endless since they have two different sounds.

I urge anyone who didn't like Endless Wire after the first listen to be patient. It's no masterpiece but it has a lot of good songs. The album seems to be really struggling sales wise- last I checked it was like number 16 on amazon.com

It peaked at number 3 FrankM last week when it was released. I think thats impressive for the Who, who unlike the stones, there albums and or greatest hits collections dont always sell that well.

Modern Times by a mile.

Then ABB, especially because of It Wont Take Long and Back of My Hand

Endless Wire is a nice try, but it sounds rushed.

Being a huge fan of all three artists, I had to weigh in. I own every bit of recorded music by all three and have seen each of them at least 50 times over the years.

1. ABB -- a solid Stones album, probably the best overall Stones album since tattoo you. I WANTED to hear the new songs on the tour and still listen to this over a year later.

2. Endless Wire -- maybe its just because its great to hear roger and pete playing any new music, but some of this record is great. Black widow's eyes, mike post theme and most of the mini opera are all great songs that sounds freash but also have classic Who touches.

3. Modern Times -- a great album for sure, but not as good as Time out of Mind, or Love and Theft, the predecessors.

All that being said, even tho ive seen parts all three performed live, ive definitely lived with ABB longer than the other two, so that might be why i like it the best.

Its pretty incredible that in 2006 all three of these artists are not only putting out great new material, but are still playing great live shows!!!

Long Live Rock
