Just finished reading the interview - posted by StonesTod (thanks ST) - with Albert Maysles (he was the roving cameraman at the Beacon shows.He also happened to put a little film together with his late brother David called "GIMME SHELTER") were he stated there are 150 HOURS of unseen footage from the 1969 tour. They might use a bit of the outtakes in Scorsese's film "SHINE A LIGHT" or he's thinking of expanding GIMME SHELTER to a double disc, longer version with extra footage. I say NO WAY !! The only thing to do with that priceless footage is recreate an entire 1969 MSG SHOW, Putting together the entire ALTAMONT SHOW and a third disc of outtakes of the Stones recording, hanging around the hotel rooms, traveling, more backstage footage, and rehearsing... plus anything else they have of interest on film. Call it "The Complete 1969 Rolling Stones Concerts"(nice simple name)
Maysles is 80 years old. Once he's gone you can forget ever seeing anything like: the BRILLIANTLY FRANTIC 1969 version of MIDNIGHT RAMBLER that's never been topped - highlight of the show. The MSG SYMPATHY with Taylor and Richards throwing leads back and forth - TOTALLY on top of their game, STRAY CAT BLUES, LIVE WITH ME....BROWN SUGAR AND GIMME SHELTER at ALTAMONT...on and on. The 1969 tour was magic and the footage is sitting in some old vault fading away - simply UNBELIEVABLE !!!......

I just got chills reading that!

Brings to mind Charlie's remark from the "25X5" film [from an interview conducted during what appears to be a break in rehearsals].

On the subject of working with the Stones for twenty-five years:

"Well, what are we doing then? Waiting around. That's what it's been: five years workin', the other twenty waitin' around..."

That's twenty percent. I know he was just grousing, but it's a funny and maybe revealing way to think about the ratio of drudgery to glory at even the highest reaches of the rock'n'roll game.

Minus the masterpiece film and bonus DVD material as we know it, what percentage of the outtake footage do you think will have any historical or entertainment value at all?

I knew there was stuff out there it is unbelievable that no one made any attempt to release it.

as well as what Leonard has said above (which is almost certainly an issue as the extra songs on the Criterion reissue of 'Gimme shelter' were covers and not ABCKO-owned Stones originals), I think its also a case of not knowing what the hell to do with it

There simply isnt a format or concept available to release so much footage, and maybe not enough interest with the right people to plough through 150 hours of 37-year old reels and spend months and months re-editing them into a few hours of film which would be not only releasable but financially viable.

Micksbrain's 'dream' if it sounds pretty good to me, though.

We'll probably just have to wait until that SOB Klein pops his clogs for justice to be done to the 60's material. Hopefully his heirs wont be as impossible to deal with.

And who knows how much unreleased stuff there is from other films such as @#$%& Blues (yes, I know, the film itself was never released), Ladies and Gentlemen, Let's Spend the Night Together, Four Flicks, other things both released and unreleased.

I wrote Maysels Films Inc. a couple of years ago. They told me, in their reply, that they had MSG '69 and Altamont '69 complete in stock. They also said that they were working on a worldwide release of "Gimme Shelter" (Possibly that means we'll get more from it all). I'll go check if I still have the mail hidden in my inbox.

I am not so sure that we can blame this situation entirely on Klein. What always baffles me is while everyone describes him as a greedy bastard, he seems to be reluctant to milk the Stones cow for money when it comes to archive projects. Which leads to the question if he is really the one with the final say. I doubt that. While Klein's permission is certainly needed when a project requires material that touches his rights, I believe the final say on unreleased material is in the hands of the Stones themselves. Any record company who wants to, let's use this an an example, release a complete 1969 MSG or Altamont show on CD and DVD surely needs Klein's permission, but in the end this permission is useless when the Stones veto it. And we know that the Stones are quite, eh, reluctant to touch archive material even if it is post 1971 material and entirely under their control.

As I said before George Lucas was a camera man on Gimme Shelter so if you could get him interested in restoration of one of his first projects.....

Look at what Jimmy Page did with the 2 disc Zeppelin DVD set. I mean the thing is just so amazing there aren't words. The Picture AND sound improvements are just FANTASTIC !!! Get the same team together and put Lucas or someone in charge...it CAN be done.....

I distinctly remember an interview with the Maysels brothers about the Gimme Shelter movie, and they spoke about the technical difficulties they had filming. Apparently, every camera held a canister with only had 8 minutes of film. So, they had to decide beforehand which songs they were going to film with all camera's at the same time, as all camera's had to reload which would take several minutes. This is the reason they had to splice Satisfaction from two concerts together, and why Love in Vain is a collage of images. They also said they only had a couple more songs in complete form, with Stray Cat as the one they would have liked to release with the new DVD release of Gimme Shelter, but this was banned by Klein. So if they have "hundreds of hours" of film, it must all be very fragmented, and without sound.

George Lucas was a cameraman on the film, but his footage was not used in the final print because of a camera jam.

why does klein do these things, why wouldnt he let it get rleased, in other words what does he get out of being a prick

this may explain why alot of the extra footage is not in great quality

In regard to Mathijs' post:
When I wrote the Maysles film company I asked if they had Altamont in it's entirety. The answer was: Should be in stock.

I do not have much knowledge about makeing film, but if it took only 8 minutes before the camera had to be reloaded with film, one would think that it would be a hell of a job to sort out the material, in order to fit the music for a whole show. BTW I once read that there exicted a half an hour extended version that never was aired or released in some way, but the Maysles lost it somehow.

If I understand it corrctly, it was technically virtually impossible to film an entire concert in 1969. This is also mentioned on the new DVD release of Harrison's Bangladesh movie -they experienced the same problems as Maysels mentioned. I would expect more material to be available from Altamont, but not the entire show.

About George Lucas: his shots are in the film, it's the wide angled shots from the bac overviewing the entire crowd at Altamont. He's also credited in the liner notes.

Was it really impossible to film an entire concert even in 1969? If that's true then I'm amazed and puzzled. You might be right, but it just sounds weird.
Anyway: They also said that they would release a worldwide Gimme Shelter. I hope it happens. It's been some years since they said it though.

I can't believe that the Stones, especially Mick with all of his acute business savy would allow Klein to maintain ANY rights to anything at this late date! I thought that when he was given the boot, all of those decisions were final and he was basicly bought off.

old contracts from 60s still valid, thats the point! Mick surely wants to get rid of Klein, but contracts are contracts and Stones still bound by papers they signed when young!!!
