Drake, I understand your scepsis but how they did it I don't know but they did a hell of a job on sticky and through the past darkly. This sounds like they had the mastertapes but they didn't. Maybe you can checkout their website. www.toupltd.com frank. Oh yeah, you got mail! btw, you may give the link I provided to other people who are interested.

Frank, many thanks for the link. I am a skeptic but I don't claim to know everything. Also, regardless of whether they had some amazing source or just the latest SACD of Sticky Fingers, I'm still interested in their work. Even emulated surround sound can be very interesting.

Drake, this is real surround sound, from what I understand is that these people take the songs apart into different Hz for example voice is from 5000 to 8000Hz (correct me if I'm wrong) they isolate that bit and make a channel for that, and so on with guitar drums etc.

That type of engineering is actually a "simulated" surround sound. Even though the majority of the vocals might be in that frequency range, there will also be some guitar, drums, etc bleeding through. I'm looking forward to hearing it though. You can get some amazing results through that work.

I started working on a 5.1 mix last month and have yet to finish it. This thread has inspired me to get back on it. The band is called Squarewell. They're a local band, not well known, but have a very interesting vibe. The mix is by no means done but is still a fun listen... [65.75.190.240]

Shoot me some feedback if you are able to listen to it in 5.1... Listening on a normal stereo setup will give you an alternate mix missing much of the recording.

I'm also confused, but nevermind, the results are great. I don't think that the mixes have been done from the original multitrack masters, but I don't think that the effects come from filters either, because the sound in the different channels are discrete. Many of the boots are made from, maybe not the original masters, but from copies of the masters. Could it be so that these 5.1 mixes have been made from copies of the multitrack masters? I don't know anything about the possibilities to get such copies, but we know for sure that copies have been stolen or whatever, otherwise we wouldn't have had "The last time", "Have you seen your mother baby", 19th Nervous breakdown" in Stereo. We wouldn't have had the "Their satanic" -sessions CD boot etc.

Got Sticky Fingers today in 5.1 DTS. With a bit of sceptisism I started playing it on my surroundsystem, turned on the DTS-function..... One word: WOW! Don´t know how they did it, but it´s really good. Real good separation, and I´m discovering new things in every song. Thank you, who sent it, you know who you are!
Now I have to get them all!!

I had the exact same thing, I'm hearing things on there I've never heard before. And still they managed to keep the atmosphere of sticky on the record. Have to thank the guys from TOUP for that.

Technically speaking, are these discs SACD:s? I tried SF on my computer that also has a surround speaker system hooked up, but then all I got was noise. But my DVD-player handled it excellent, and it´s able to play both DVD-Audio and SACD:s.
So a DVD player without those functions can´t play it?

Nope, it's not sacd. sacd is analogue audio. this should be played through a digital cable and amplifier. When you hear the noise (which can damage your ears so be very carefull!!!) you're playing analogue, don't try to play this on your car stereo either, it won't work.

Just listened to Depeche Mode - Violator The music is not always my cup of tea, but what a sound! Maybe the best surround dvd I have heard yet.

Mr. Frankie, thank you for the link. I gave SF5.1 a good listen and honestly I think it came out incredibly well. I'm genuinely surprised that they managed to get such decent separation, without ruining the sound quality. Considering they were working from an official release and not the original multitrack masters, FRANKly I'm stunned. Many thanks for exposing me to this. Now I'm seeking out the other Stones DTS releases. Those of you who are hardcore audiophiles will be pleasantly surprised by the depth of the recording. The tones are accurate, the separation is very nice and the full-on BL and BR add greatly to the warmth of the recording.
