As I listen to at least one Stones Show..a day...I always hear TD...I know many of you are tired of TD but I have to say its one of there best songs..and The 78 long intro version is so cool the 73 vers kicks as to....such a fine tune really!!!

Love it - to be honest, I just don't tire of it ever. In fact, it's a bit of a mystery to me, how come I always like it? I remember an interview when Jagger said it was a mistery to him as well! Something along the lines of: "I don't think it's such a great tune really, but people seem to go crazy every time we play it, so we keep playing it."
It's that intro, ultimate groove, both lazy and powerful, those fab lyrics, the ending crescendo, the simplicity of the Baaaby baaaby...
There's a fine line between 'banal' and 'classic'. Among 2000 songs built the same way, with the same lyrics and the same hooks, 5 or 6 will become the archetypes, and the rest pale copies. It doesn't even depend on the chronology. Something about being refined to the point where it encapsulates every general thing without being narrowed to any particular perspective.

Just try to list all the sentences that cristallise on these few words: "You gotta roll me... keep on rolling!"

Just a few:
Let the good times roll,
Keep on moving,
Rock n' roll,
You gotta (+1000 options)

Arguably, a song with the words "Gotta", "roll", "me", "you" and "baby" has cross-references to every song that ever mattered in soul, blues or rock.

An awesome live song that I didn't think was a headliner this tour, for whatever reason...

For one thing they've been playing it earlier in the rotation, at lesat 1st half of the tour... and IMO this is a "late in the 2nd half" type song.

It's that riff, how could you ever tire of that amazing amazing riff ? I can't. TD is the ONE warhorse these days I really would NOT actually be happy to hear them drop from a set. JJF, BS, Sympathy, Satisfaction, Start me Up - I could live without hearing those again, but for TD there's ALWAYS place in a show - at least for me there is.

I can't get enough of the song and will be chillin' by the catwalk for L.A. "

I'm all 6's and 7's and 9's..."

And its always different...in 73 on the ending part.he sang ''Everybody needs someone to love ...sometimes''in 78...Rolling with the girls(anaheim) Its been such a long time ago!(Philly 78)I always go grazy when he does that OOOhh...OOOh part on the end!....On some bootlegs I found Charlie so grooving...sort of bump song...Charlie is always strong on it...Jagger do sing the lyrics Different everytime...the ending part is pure soul gospel....that said the 78 vers was the best...what a long groovy intro...everybody in Philly singing...you got tha roll me..Thats what I said sugar! yeah a great tune..and nowadays its the song in concert when Jagger And Keith really makes contact with the crowd.

I have to say I love the Long intro 78 vers better than the long outro version of today...but it remains ...well its a a very intense part of the show.

I don't think you can really say that TD has a "riff" . To me, a riff is a guitar line that repeats itself thru most of a song..like Satisfaction...now that's a riff! TD has some great guitar work, tho..great intro and that great chunky Keef rythym

I just LOVE this song. It is that great intro. Whenever i play the studio version I always restart the song a couple of times just to hear that great guitar part again. I remember my first stones show, wembley stadium, july 11th 1995, and it was the second song, and the place just went nuts. Honest to god, where I was (right down the front) the audience were drowning out the PA during the "Baby..." parts.

I think this song is better near the beginning of a show.

You know what? I was at the same show. It rained when the Black Crowes played and then they came on and when Keith hit the intro to Tumbling Dice the tears started to roll down my cheeks, I sobbed the whole song....God knows why, probably because they sounded so great and I was so happy. That gig is in my all time top five proabably because of Tumbling Dice. My Mrs at the end got a small burn on her back from a firework and when I see the scar it brings back real good memories of that gig.

It's defenitly one of my top 5. It's one of those songs that I just never get tired of! That riff, that solo, those lyrics, Charlie, Mick's improvisations, the horns at the end, it's all perfect, one of their best feel good songs, full of soul. I love the 70's versions but my favorite vesrions come from the Voodoo Lounge and Bridges To Babylon tours. They were really perfect. I particularly like the New Orleans performance from the Voodoo Lounge Tour, Ronnie and Mick are really, really great there.

It works brilliant in the show, especially if the crowd is a bit quiet. It's a crowd pleaser, and it's swinging - I love it.

among my favourite stones tunes of all time - has a better rock tune ever been written? this is one of the few songs that sounds better with the "vegas" treatment; love the backup VOX . . . and when the horns come in for the last couple minutes, i could roll all night . . .

you can't catch me!

used to feel that way, NIK....but on this tour, Vegas has taken over. Often, KR does very little playing on this - and he used to OWN this one on stage.

The greatest performance of this song ever recorded is Brussels. Play it loud, listen closely and listen to Taylor closely. The song closes sounding like a symphony.

Watch the L&G performance of TD closely. When Keith starts the closing riff Taylor starts doodling. Keith hears it, steps back and shuts Taylor down. He may even say "Stop that!" Then he physically demonstrates what he wants Taylor to play. The song closes, nothing happens and it's over. Nice riff, but it could use something.

It is a perfect example of the difference between Keith's and Taylor's musical vision. Taylor was right, of course. Something CAN be done with that closing riff. It took a little over a year for Taylor to prove it, but he did with the Brussels performance.

Keith might have said it best when in an interview he said the he always get´s a hard on when he sees Tumblin Dice on the set list!:-)
I have no idea why it's my all time favorite song live and on cd. And I'm not looking for an explanation, I'm just enjoying the fact that a song can be better and better the more you hear it. Not many songs like that.

If Keith's guitar in TD isn't a riff, I don't know what is.

It's riff allright, the most significant is the riff that keeps repeating the last 1 or 2 minutes of the song.

Well, little did I know that my comments were going to initiate a discussion about what is or is not a riff, but whatever it is .............. it's bloody magnificent, and consequently THAT song has a place in EVERY show as far as I'm concerned !!

It's the perfect nexus of rock, blues, soul, and gospel that manages to lay back and push hard almost simultaneously, from the opening phrasing to the riff-laden chorus and horns. And it's got a beautiful ending.

Perfect Stones.

Allons va a bien? Alright.

My, dare I say, "love" for this one grew after seeing/hearing it live. Then again, my fondness for Ms Fisher does have some influence here.
