I predicted that the Cards would make it, but I gotta favor the Tigers, for one reason -- Jim Leyland. See, I'm a Pirates fan, and the last worthwhile Buc lineup was managed by that man.

While I respect Tony LaRussa immensely, I truly admire Leyland -- he took the Marlins to the Series in 1998, and I think he is an underappreciated manager. He's also a true gentleman, and a soft-spoken genius at his craft. He knows how to motivate modern-era players and instill a team spirit based on loyalty to his vision. These days, that's quite an accomplishment.

Very cool Melillo! You must be wading thru the river of tears from Mets fans in NJ!! Hope they enjoy their 100,000,000$ player and the statue he posed for Thurs. night.

The Cardinal is a handsome bird but I've really gotten into Penguins this last year.... Ever since the wonderful film "March of the Penguins" came out I can't get enough of those cute bastards in their little tuxedo's.....

how can you say they were cocky with only 83 wins , cmon man

........proudly the Cardinals are making one last stand with some very good old veterans....but I don't think it's enough. The Tigers are young, hungry and have a ton of fire power(pitching)..........that they disposed of the Yankees so easily speaks for itself.

Puhols said Glavine was no good when he whipped them. That was cocky. LaRussa is always cocky and arrogant.

Good point JJF. Pujols has more than a little Barry Bonds in him. He needs to take "How to be Sweet and Humble" lessons freely offered by your average New York sports fan!! lol

WOW, an extreme case of CLASS amongst sports fans!! A rarity indeed! Just wish Hoffman had closed out the AllStar game! Oh well, at least Hells Bells is one of my all time favorite songs!

As a Red Sox fan of 30 years, I want to thank the Cards for their 2004 WS performance, or lack thereof. Revenge for '46 and '67 was sweet.

Good luck - it's looking like this may be Detroit's year, but then again - who three weeks ago expected the Cards to win the pennant? Anything's possible in October.

I just hope it's a good series that goes at least six games.

Oh, and stop waving those damn white towels around - you're not the Angels, you don't need stupid gimmicks.

Hey Dr Pete--get a clue--Beltran--41 Hrs 116 Rbis, 95 walks 127 runs scored, Gold Glove defense--we LOVE Carlos. You must be a Yankees fan--would certainly explain the inane, uninformed comment. How do YOU like --A-Rod?? .098 at 252 Million--and despised my his own teamates. You would probably rather have overrated Damon (what a cannon for an arm!) in CF. LOL

Re: OT- cardinals fan here
Posted by: DrPete ()
Date: October 22, 2006 05:34

Actually a cards fan, 7-1!! So far!! I can kid about Beltran since he has KILLED us before and it was a blast watching his knees break on Wainwright's curve. Finally we got him! Hate the Yanks also, Boss needs to spend more $$$ to get more worthless free agents ie (Arod, Rogers, Witson, pavano, Weaver (oh, hell, he's with us now!!)

Re: OT- cardinals fan here
Posted by: melillo ()
Date: October 22, 2006 05:36

yes and he is doing great for us in the playoffs, go weaver

Re: OT- cardinals fan here

Well, then I apologize to you Dr Pete. As an NL fan, I am rooting for the Cards. But is the guy who stole Weaver's uniform the same guy who stole Kenny Rogers? And, that was a knee buckling curve Wainwright threw--that dude is nasty. Good luck to your team.

Thats cool Glass, the Mets series brought back good memories (Pendletons HR) and bad memories ( Straws 500 ft HR) from the 80's. Gotta route for the NL always! Maybe we'll win the 1st game in 3 years tonight!

Re: OT- cardinals fan here

Yes--I recall both those memories, well. That was a CRAZY rivalry in the '80's. Huge win for your team--they get at least a split and almost as importantly spared their bullpen. After, the way Reyes pitched in the NLCS and the way Verlander pitched, who could have predicted tonite? Another reason why Baseball, to me, is the best sport, by far.

I could not help but notice you left 2000 out of your stroll down memory lane. lol
THe Pendelton game still hurts--changed the entire season.

Great game by the Cards tonite
