I don't know how many of these guys actually auditioned, but some of the names (rumored or otherwise) included:

- Doug Wimbish (Living Colour, Tackhead-?, Mick's solo stuff)
- Flea (approached by Mick, I think)
- Joey Spampinato (NRBQ, Hail! Hail! Rock N' Roll, "I Could Have Stood You Up")
- Me'shell Ndegeocello (wound up playing on "Saint Of Me")

I'm surprised I never heard Charley Drayton's name thrown around.

Anybody else?

I remember Joey Spampinato (NRBQ) was widely rumored to being one the inside track. I still think his style would have been better suited...very similar to Bill's.

I really thought that Spampinato had the job.I think they really auditioned many many bassists. A) I rememebr an interview with Keith where he was tal;king abou the endless auditions; how they would go in, say 'hello' and bang out JJF and BS and then it was "Next!". And cool smiley a friend of mine from a local smalltime band was called to audition. Not too belittle him, but in the big picture of rockstar bassplayers he is way at the bottom. If he was caled I know for a fact that they were really opening the doors to a lot of people.

I heard Flea refused, he was loyal to the Chili Peppers.

How about guitar replacements for Mick Taylor?
Besides the known ones, I recently read that Michael Schenker was considered.

I could never see Flea wanting to be a Stone.

Pino Palladino, and obviously Darryl Jones.

Onstage, Joey could probably "pass" for Bill visually.

And his swingin' bass sound would have really given a bounce to the Stones.

But as I've said here before, at the time he was too involved with NRBQ to commit to the Stones full time.

Now it might be a different story. They should call him!

(One slight problem:I once read that Joey stopped listening to Stones albums when Beggars Banquet came out. He didn't like the idea of "Sympathy for the Devil.")

Is this Serious ?????????????

I never heard Flea was asked to audition... for real ??????????

While he's the greatest electric bass player who ever played, he doesn't have a pure rocker style...

Anyone can confirm he auditioned ?? or was asked ???

I'm thinking Flea could make more money with the Peppers. Mick is pretty tight in that department, y'know? Besides, could anyone imagine Flea dancing around a RS stage wearing only his tattoos? I don't think I would want to see that!

Kenny Aaronson, current bass player for John Eddie. Kenny has toured with Bob Dylan, Joan Jett, Rick Derringer, Billy Idol, Foghat among others.

A drunk guy at a Queen show told me that John Deacon was asked to audition but wan't interested. Could have been interesting but the source was really pissed.

I remember reading in the papers in the early 90s, that "Rolling Stones could be getting a female bassplayer, as a chick had been for audition"...doesn't mean that it was true, though.

I don't think NRBQ loyalty was the issue - the Q had already lost Al Anderson by then. I think the issue was that Joey was never offered the gig - I have little doubt he would have accepted it, if offered. Sigh.

I don't think Flea ever auditioned...I recall Jagger jokingly mentioning it in a "Q" magazine article in early '93 (to promote Wandering Spirit).

Pino Pallidino (now of The Who), Joey Spampinado, Doug Whimbish and 16 other auditioned in NYC in June 1993 (see old issues "Beggars Banquet").

When it still wasn't official that Bill had left, the Stones joked that they would threaten to replace him with a woman bass player if he left.

Around fall of 1993, I read an AP story that Elton John's bass player (don't know his name) called the Stones office to inquier about auditioning.

i don't know if this was a dream...? but i remember it was knocked around that ronnie wood would move over to bass and let mick taylor return to guitar...
does any old timers remember this?

I remember reading in the tabloid press that John Deacon was being considered.

Also Duff McKagan of Guns n' Roses was listed. Not sure if that would have worked, I'm not convinced that he's any good. Comments anyone?

The same article also said that the Stones were considering moving Ronnie onto bass and bringing back MT.

I can't remember who else was mentioned in the story.

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

You got in there just before me!

It was in the Sun newspaper that I read that particular story.

Duff is actually a very good bassplayer and probably the most talented member of that days G'n'R.

Can someone replace Bill ? Sure nobody. Even if Darryl is a high talented musician.

Flea would've been awesome! But not the greatest move for his own best interests.
That would've been hilarious to see the bass player upstage Mick.

Flea was asked to do the '94 tour with the Stones. Not as a permanent replacement but only for the tour. Duff and John Deacon never ever were candidates, the only real candidates after Flea were Doug Wimbush, Joey Spampinato, Pino Pallidino and Darryl Jones.

Thank god Flea isn't playing with the stones!!!!!
He is a hell of a bassplayer but come on, I wouldn't want to see him up on stage!

Cheers,
Wuudy
