Oh my I forgot, the mention of Smokey somehow reminded me of my need for Curtis Mayfield - the Impressions, I had the 4 Kent label 2-fers, and my ex junkie roommate stole the 3rd, I believe, not on amazon anymore damnit...but songs like "You've Come Home" (the '63 debut), "I've Been Trying," ('64), "I'm So Proud" and so many others, are of such exquisite lyrical/melodic/vocal brilliance, seemingly delicate as a spurned lover at 4 AM, and vulnerable, but utterly open and resolute, overpowering in the most un-macho way imagineable for a soul star of his generation...His work w/ Gene Chandler ("God Bless Our Love", "A Mans Temptation""Just Be True"), and more great stuff he produced /wrote for others, 18 gems on "Curtis Mayfield's Chicago Soul" issued in '96 but criminally out of print (Major Lance, Walter Jackson, Opals etc '63-66)...
And then he went solo 1970, a string of more funk-influenced albums, Superfly most famous, producing dead-at-26 400 pound Baby Huey,"Short Eyes" soundtrack ('77) pretty astonishing, and yes a great guitarist and arranger still underrated (I'm pretty sure he had some influence on "Slipping Away"). RIP.
