I'd scrap #1 & #7 because theyre not good movies, #4 because whilst a good film, its musical content regarding the Stones career is minimal, #8 because its not really a good performance and one show from '76 is enough, #10 because almost all of the songs are edited and the PPV from the tour is miles better on every level, #11 because the DVD doesnt do it justice and there are far better material to choose from from that tour, #12 and #13 because theyre incomplete recording and the full broadcasts are superior. One 2006 show is enough. Personally I prefer Rio for the spectacle, plus I think its a great show. As concerts, its a toss-up between them both but the historical significance of Rio gives it the edge.

That leaves you with :
02) Rock'n'Roll Circus (1968)
03) The Stones In The Park (1969)
05) Gimme Shelter (1969, not 1970)
06) Ladies And Gentlemen (1972)
09) Knebworth Fair (1976)
14) Let It Bleed (Arte 2002)
15) Four Flicks (2003)
16) Rio De Janeiro (2006)

Unfortunately, youve ignored everything pre-Beggars Banquet, when the Stones really made their reputation. Somewhat unfair to basically disregard the Brian Jones era almost entirely

So, throw in these 9 instead of the 9 deleted above :

TAMI Show 1964
Ready Steady Go compilations 1964-66 (I'd give these the edge over the Sullivan shows because the entire band usually performed live)
LA Blues (LA Forum 1975)
Fort Worth 1978 (ideally if the full show comes into circulation - it exists)
Hampton TV broadcast 1981
Tokyo 26.2.90 (better show than Atlantic City '89)
Rio de janeiro (Voodoo Lounge) 1995
Stripped TV special 1995
Buenos Aires 1998

I would not trow out @#$%& Blues, I love it. As morbid as it is at times, it seems to capture the spirit of the '72 tour very well, and has many cool scenes loaded with atmosphere, not to mention a few awesome concert clips. But I seem to be in the minority with those opinions among Stones fans. Other than that, I find Gazza's arguments very reasonable.

This is the way I'd rank official and boots:

1.- Four Flicks.
2.- Gimme Shelter.
3.- Stripped.
4.- L.A. Blues.
5.- Ladies & Gentlemen.
6.- Voodoo Lounge Concert (The official one).
7.- A Bigger Bang In Buenos Aires.
8.- Superbowl 2006.
9.- Voodoo In Buenos Aires.
10.- Nippon Voodoo.
11.- Aux Abattoirs.
12.- Hampton Roads 1981.
13.- Atlantic City 1989.

And I know I've forgotten many. The Johannesburg concert is great too. Oh, and I COMPLETELY forgot: Double Door '97 should be right after Stripped on my list.

Steven assembled this himself and it was treed and torrented some time ago. An essential compilation of live footage (mostly from pro shots and broadcasts) from the last three decades or so.

Agree with you re: the addition of the Double Door DVD to that list. Still cant see the point of representing a tour with a heavily edited official release when there's bootleg copies in excellent quality of the full shows instead, though.

You're right. But I, as a completeist, have to get the official ones too. And I enjoy them. The VL DVD is very good IMO. Only problem is that it only has 2 new tracks.

yeah, the TAMI performance and the handful of extant RSG's need to be added for sure!
and there's that Chris Evans show from april 99. it's more interview than concert footage, but it's beautiful.

Has The TAMI Show been remastered and released on official DVD in any country? I love that film. I should add that The Girl Can't Help It is apparently available on the Jayne Mansfield Collection (an expensive 4 DVD set), and it is apparently in Cinemascope, as originally released. It's not for every taste, but there is some great early rock and roll footage in there.

Saitama has to be in there for one reason -- proof that the Stones still get it done 40 years down the road.

Gotta agree that CS Blues and One Plus One don't belong. They are essential and important, but they ain't much fun to watch.

25X5 has not been mentioned. It would be a boot, and any performances are truncated, but as a document, it stays true, and the interviews (esp. Charlie and Bill) are great.

>> The Girl Can't Help It <<

with Eddie! :E

meanwhile: i've never heard of the TAMI show being officially released on VHS or DVD, but wasn't it a movie release once upon a time?
and i'd agree wholeheartedly about 25x5 if Let It Bleed hadn't been made - have you seen it?
it's got a lot of 25x5 in it, but it's been expanded upon as well as updated, and it's great.

and i like One Plus One! i'd love it if someone would create an edit with just the scenes with the Stones,
but as it is it doesn't bother me. and 1968 was such an astonishing year for the Stones in so many ways,
and there's so little documentation of it.

I don't see the incredible 71 Marquee Club mentioned anywhere here.

yeah but the "let It Bleed" documentary renders it obsolete - it uses some of the same footage, but its much more comprehensive

Love the LIB documentary.
How is that Australian documentary? I heard it is supposedly good.

I've tried to download that Let It Bleed DVD several times. It always stops before it's finished. I hope it's not such a good movie, as you claim!

Sorry Erik-Snow ... but the Let It Bleed DVD is the perfect documentary about the Rolling Stones!

yes. along with the other artists on the show of course. Directed by Steve Binder - the guy who did Elvis' legendary NBC TV special a few years later.

anyone with any doubts as to what a great band the Stones were that early in their career should watch that show. Its fabulous. Brian's sheer charisma is especially incredible to watch - especially the way he whips the audience up on "its all over now"

Four Flicks is the best VHS/DVD they released ever period.

About the LIB Docu: I thought it was just 25x5 with the years after the original ended put it. Isn't that so? Or has it been made even more extensive? I never owned it unfortunately. I'd like to though.

No - whilst it has a similar idea, its a different documentary and made by different film makers (the Austrian directors Dolezal and Rossacher, who have put together several Stones specials down the years). Some of the band interviews for 25 x 5 are re-used however. 25 x 5 was an American production (I think Lorne Michaels of SNL was the producer although I'd need to check) and first shown as an "Arena" special on the BBC at Christmas 1989, albeit in edited form (25 mins shorter than the video release). "Let It Bleed" was commissioned for ARTE (a combined French and German sateliite channel) and to my knowledge wasnt shown anywhere else. The English language cut was an unbroadcast version

Its also considerably longer. 25 x 5 clocks in at about 130 minutes. Let It Bleed is a few minutes shy of three hours.

LIB is definitely the superior of the two.

Did you know I was just sitting around waiting for your answer? :-)
Well, it sounds great. Can I buy it from you? Please no e-mail as I can't check it where I am.

So the English version is a tad longer then?

The English version of LIB is the same as the French and German versions - its the 'original version' as the film was made in English, but some of the commentary and interviews were dubbed into French/German for broadcast in those countries

I dont sell DVDs but will be in touch
