Keith's Autobiography and his drug use
Posted by: stonesriff ()

I just finished reading Keith's Autobiography that came out in the early 90's. I knew he did a lot of drugs but i was amazed to see that he continued to use cocain until the early 90's and that he continued to drink heavily and smoke hash and thats when the book stopped (around 1990). Does he still do these drugs like cocaine or does he just stick to the booze and the sweat shebah?

He still dabbles with heroin and probably uses cocaine now and then. Cannabis and boze on a dayly basis.

I've never used H, but my thoughts were that it is impossible for an ex-addict to simply dabble in the stuff. What do you guys think?

Much less dabblin' than one usually thinks,
I'd say. They sell records in keepin' these rumours alive.
But if I had severe Artrithis, I'd smoke so much marijuana
they would have to carry me around in a wagon...
Otherwise: Don't try this at home!

I think he smokes joints and drinks regularly, can't imagine that he does harder drugs still, to be honest. I think Mick sometimes takes stuff to make him perform harder - dunno what's best for that. I'm not talking about Viagra now.

... dabbling or ''chipping'' with heroin is not unusual,, all the way down to junior high school kids these days with the abundance of tar in the states anyway... many learn quick (many dont) on how to control a habit, to slow down before being strung out once again,,, in otherwords, after a three day run, one might want to drink a bottle of jack daniels, and put the 'stuff' away.....

Keith was asked in a fans Q&A interview in Q magazine in 1998 when he last tried heroin and he replied that he had tried some around the start of the tour (ie autumn 1997) out of curiousity but that it did nothing for him anymore.

"Dabbling" is not that big of a deal, really, unless one buys the demented AA philosophy that teaches addicts not to do things in moderation (the hardest and perhaps healthiest option), but to avoid them altogether. I know people who have come out of two year rehab programs for heroin addiction and have, in fact, "dabbled" repeatedly. They did not take up the habit again and they are certainly not dead.

Hey stonesriff man, read up and down with the rolling stones by tony sanchez, it is a good f_ckin book, it does not glorify his drug use during the 70's, just the hard truths about it, the realities about making one's life not so good and the things one will do to get high. I think victor bockris ia a goof and just wanted to make some money, sure so did spanish tony but he was there and told the truth about keith and his inner circle at the time, read it man and you will understand why there music suffered so much in the 70's.

Agree Raoul - a friend of mine was a "dabbling" taxi driver for 15 years, plus a great guitar player.
Well, he gave up driving taxi's 'cause he's administrating a big firm's computer farm.
didn't give up playin' guitar nor.........

His heavy drug and alcohol use can be seen in his lack of musical creativity lately.....

yeah, I think Keith's (or any musician's) drug habits should be discussed through how it affects their creativity. There are many sad examples of alcohol dulling the song writing process. I think anyone who'd drank more than "a couple" winking smiley knows it's hard to get anything done the next day. Then imagine drinking like that all the time.
Heroin seems to take over a person completely, I don't buy the dabbling-is-harmless theory. It sounds like denial to me. Evidence shows the stuff yields great creative results at the very beginning, but then it kills all other processes. Take Johnny Thunders; the guy wrote almost all of his songs, even the ones recorded in the 80's, in the early 70's, before he hooked up with Sable Starr and got into heroin.

He kicked the habit and I think he dabbles with it still cause he's so hooked on adrenaline. But, and this is a big but, he is old and more secure and dont need that image anymore. So no i dont think he gets hooked the same way. If you are a heavy smoker and quit it isnot impssible to smoke years later and not get hooked. If he has that black box it may very well work and he probably knows his limits now.
