I guess I am the only one that's not that excited about these songs? I mean, it's a great find with alternate and unfinished versions, but it reminded me again why I never play Steel Weels. The production is just too clean, IMO. I'll give it another shot when I drive home tonight from work.

You can't accuse this production of being slick....

First of all thanks to those who made this possible.
It even made me try to download. Easy to install sofware etc. But gee I am not that patient.....
Kent or Michrud : If you have a nice non mp-3 copy, then let me know.
I must have some stuff you guys don't have......( I'm only asking my fellow Danes for this favour because it's easier )

may be the same vocal, but the mix (especially on the guitars) is VERY different and gives it a rawer sound, with much more lead guitar being audible. Its also about 6 and a half minutes, consisting of a much, much longer coda than the released take. Blows the released version out of the water IMO

several of the songs have different vocals, but in some others there are instruments featured more prominently in the mix than the released versions - such as the fiddle on Blinded By Love as well as some of the others youve mentioned. Mick's vocal is also more upfront in Break the Spell, which makes it a more enjoyable version IMO.

Wow - are you still happy with that?

IMO, I think you overdid it there - it's too sharp and ringing.
I just edited all the songs too.
cut off static tape hiss at beginning and ends of the tracks.
then I added some more punch by using Ultramaximizer+ without touching the EQ

On first listen I actually think this version of "Mixed Emotions" is bit weaker. It may not be the mix so much as the lack of mastering. Maybe I'm recalling more the version that's on Laid in the Shade (Vol. 2?), recorded off the radio I think, which has a really hot sound. This one is raw in a way that sounds a little thinner, whereas it's a great pop song made for a fat mix.

"Hold on to Your Hat" on the other hand because it's less slick sounds much better. Not that it becomes a great song, but I can hear the groove and what they were trying to do with it.

Keith's version of Almost Hear You Sigh equals Mick's.. Mick is very good on that one too so I can't really say which one is better..

This is what should have been released, Rock and Hard Place sounds great the horns and drums drive it like crazy, in most of the tracks the drums sound like a hammer, great stuff for sure.
Thanks again Gazza for the heads up on this one.

Hearts For Sale is fantastic here... great version!

I really like the clean sound, because they played great stuff with it...
Especially Hearts For Sale and Terryfying are terrific!

I'm overhelmed with material we were delivered - it's outstanding...

some here are raw sounding tracks, with unfinished vocals by Mick or different vocals (like Hold On To Your Hat), some guitar parts are still not recorded, some are different, versions are also extended. You gotta love the version of Hold On To Your Hat - it kicks ass, raw soudning with blues feeling and I just love we got a bit more of it, Mick still working on lyrics and comments after the song "@#$%& great"; "good, good, good" - YES !

I love listening to this stuff and discover the differences !

and of course...there are few tracks which made me completely speechless and it's Almost Hear You Sigh with Keith on vocals - obviously I know and love versions with Winos, but this...his vocals - it's MORE than beautiful, and that baby voice he sings with, the way he works out the lyrics, the line "babe, I know that I...I shouldn't make you cry, uh yeah...but I can almost hear you sigh" and the ending of the song when he simply shouts out "you feel it baby!? do you feel it, huh!?" - oh yes I do, Keith...can you hear how sweetly he sings word "pleeeeeaaaaaze....." OH...and the bridge at 2:20 to 2:35 is outstanding and the vocals...geeez, it's dramatical in the way and puts tears in the eyes immediatelly...
&
beautiful extended version of Slipping Away, the ending could last forever for me and also Keith's not having his lyrics finished - it's so fascinating to hear him working them out, the same with Can't Be Seen.

I love the way Rock 7 Hard Place sounds, with different horns arragemenets at the beggining and than slighlty different Ronnie's solo and the bridge which is just after that. Fancy Man is extended and has some cool new guitar parts here and there with guitar solos.

Continetnatl Drift has not finished vocals by Mick & no chorus on it, but the arragements is a bit different, new stuff here and there and for me actually it works better than great Steel Wheels version (I mean - the different arragements here and there).

Precious Love is so wonderful, it's actually different from what Stones do normally, but it sounds too good. It's an outtake, but the souldful one, I love it. Mick vocals are great.

THIS IS GREAT THANK YOU TO BOB WHO MADE IT AVAILABLE FOR US. It is one of the greatest discovery in studio bootlegs for years actually. I'm so glad and feel honoured to hear this stuff. I love it, I'm listening to it since I downloaded it. This is definately outstanding stuff...

oh..I still can't believe this track number 3...

when I downloaded it I got .txt file with it...there was info about this recording along with this line:

"The music isn't necessarily unique, but I thought that it might be interesting from a historical perspective."

IT MUST BE CHANGED ! It is unique, interesting and fascinating. It's The Rolling Stones in studio. Simply. Thank you Rolling Stones!

P.S. This track "Ready Yourself"- it reminds me about other Stones outtake, I KNOW I've heard this guitar parts somewhere else before but can't find this now, but I keep on trying, I know it is somewhere in other outtake...ah...where, where, where...it's so intruiqing!

Re: The find of the decade - Steel Wheels outtakes

could "Ready Yourself" be a futher evolution of "Munich Hilton"?

Re: The find of the decade - Steel Wheels outtakes
Posted by: PiotrRSpl ()
Date: August 17, 2006 00:17

OF COURSE !!!!!YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ionce you wrote the title I didn't have to check it even.

shit, thanks pal !

it is obviously continuation of Munich Hilton, of course further evolution.
Now I have to find this interview where Ronnie talks about this outtake as a song which i he has with Keith for really long time, but never been released (what shows that Ready Yourself can be evolution of Munich Hilton - yes it is, yes it is!)

thanx for help!
