I'd say counted population-wise:
UK is no 1
Canada 2
Sweden 3
US 4... ?
(not counting such phenomenon as "Luxenburg 1 gig")

Stein, you are doing a life-sized work! It is fascinating to observe the number of gigs. No musician in the world has made more concerts than the Stones.
I guess Bill Wyman may know the exact figure of gigs. He is a great historian too.

Techincally they have only played 1 show in China, the show in Shanghai this year. Hong Kong is not actually a part of China until 2047, as it's currently an administrative region. It's similar in a way to not considering the Puerto Rico show a U.S. show, even though it was held in a U.S. territory.

Many musicians have played more concerts than the Rolling Stones, amongst them B.B. King and Bob Dylan.

Techincally the Stones played 37 and a 1/2, the first show in '64 only lasted 1/2 the concert.

Bob Dylan has probably played more shows in the last 25 years alone than the Stones have in their entire career

There are many more, without a doubt as there are lots of artists older than the Stones and who tour every year.

BB King, for example, even in his 70's was averaging well over 200 shows a year. I would also imagine that the Grateful Dead played more shows than the Stones.

Hi Frank

I thought the show was solid enough, although it was a bit rough to begin with (poor sound and Ronnie seemed a bit off the pace). Certainly got better as it went along, though. As tears go by, Midnight Rambler and Paint It Black were all very good. Even Brown Sugar - a song I'm normally bored to death with - was enjoyable, just as it had been in Berlin.

Also Felix Aeppli in his book of 1995 (The Ultimate Guide) said something about 638 venues (where the Stones played 1629 live shows) and this means today something like 812 venues (where they played 1984 live shows until 08/0872006)

So Nice could be show 1986 or 1984 or .... nobody knows!!

in 67 they played two shows, so it is indeed three all together.

I'm in the process of updating the setlists page which youve quoted above, and making a few corrections. see this link for the breakdown of total shows up to the end of 2005 - [rocksoff.org]

The total number of shows as of the end of the 2003 tour, based on info provided from other excellent sources such as Aeppli, Zentgraf and Karnbach was 1,910.

Its important to define first of all what a 'concert' is. I simply define it as a Rolling Stones concert or a concert/festival where the Stones were part of the bill. For the purposes of that list, I dont count guest appearances on TV/radio shows, so stuff like the MTV Awards and even the Superbowl dont count. The performance at Juilliard last year does, however. Ive decided not to count video shoots where they jammed between takes such as Bagleys Warehouse 1995, St Marks Bar and Grill 1981, Bains Douches, Paris 1983 etc.

So, the 90th concert of the Bigger Bang tour will be concert #2,000 IF those figures are correct (and obviously one has to allow for some margin of error as its conceivable that some shows - especially in the early days - may have been unaccounted for, or even announced but did not take place)

The 2005 leg of the tour featured 44 shows, including Juilliard and the warm-up show in Toronto. The North & South American leg in 2006 consisted of 22 shows (excluding the Superbowl) followed by ten more shows in Asia, Australia and New Zealand, bringing the total to 1,986 prior to the European leg.

So, the 14th show in Europe should be #2,000 - which is El Ejido on August 16th, unless my maths are a bit off!

but i think rocksoff notice the rock 'n roll circus recording as a gig, right ?

yes - because it was the Stones own show as opposed to a guest TV appearance. Some of the areas are a bit 'grey' to say the least.

I also included the NME Pollwinners show for that year because it wasnt a show specifically filmed as a TV guest appearance and it doesnt really fit into the 'broadcast' category.

Well Gaz. Do you know how many they have done if you do count those shows (Like the Superbowl) in? 2020???

well, youd have to add all the TV appearances then where they played live, I suppose, so I would guess its around that

By including those, it opens up a new can of worms. Do you include only performances where the whole band played live, or do you count the early TV shows where they sang live to a backing track (Ed Sullivan show, etc). Then youd have to figure whether or not there was an audience or not (defining whether its a 'concert' or not) - its gets a bit too pedantic and crazy to keep track of!

One could just say that it's the shows, no matter when and where, where they play live and have the full group playing. That means R 'n R Circus counts but the playback Sullivan shows doesn't. You're right though. It's hard to find out... And how would we classify sing-backs? Jagger live vocal to the recorded studio track...

Nice was realy good. Great show, great sound, just I feel Keith a little tired and loosign his tuch some time.
I was also in Milan. The problem in MIlan was the orrible sound in the first 4-5 songs. I thinck they perform better in Nice.
