Perfect example when strippin down & cuttin the fluff &
throwin the dead meat over board is adequate;
like with TD, SFTD & many other songs...

If it's dead for you lot then don't play it. It's not dead for me. I've played it for over 30 years. It still rocks and kicks in for me.

totally agree.
in 1973 thay don't almost played, they don't need it.
That were normal, but in this times of decadence (since 1981...) it's sad

In '69, the riff sounded like it was gonna slice you in two. Now it sounds like it's trying to knock you out with a stuffed animal.

I would prefer somethinh else, in general, but in Amstersam they played it like it was their first time. JUST GREAT!

Lizard, i agree. and would say the same about many warhorses. However, in two gigs in spain on the licks tour i quite got into it, as it meandered into a sort of manic jam session.

"Satisfaction is dead"??? You must be kidding! Just listen to Milan 2006 version. And hear that's crowd's roaring...

To be honest, i consider as the weakest versions in the Stones history the versions of 1981/82 and 1997/98. I mean it.

If I'm allowed to say something critical about our band
and their song; Tumbling Dice seems to have been dead since at least the 80s.

Satisfaction is maybe the less warhorse of the warhorses. Let me explain: it has been a warhorse since the 1989 return, but as opposite to let's say, Tumbling Dice or Brown Sugar or JJF, it was rarely (if this term can be used) in the seventies: it wasn't part of the regular setlist between 1972 and 1978 (and please don't tell me it was played with Stevie Wonder in some 1972 encores, or in some 78 gigs or in Knebworth, I mean REGULAR setlists).

Satisfaction is somewhat overplayed, but is not nearly as dead as Tumbling Dice, Miss You or specially SFTD...

It's been re-worked and re-arranged a few times...more so than many other "warhorses". Sometimes they get a nice interesting new twist and sometimes not. Maybe this years version just isn't one of the better ones.
[I liked the one with the 7th and 9th chords slid around in the chorus ]

I guess I have to say I'm sorry ( ? ), but I did like it when it was released. The sound was sensational - and still is. On this tour they play better than ever. Ronnie on wah-wah and the bluesy ending. Loved it in Cologne and Stuttgart. Love it it various boots. One of the positive surprises of this tour.

I was just watching it on the Saitama DVD, my god, Daryl is raping the song!!

As always music is a matter of taste. Some like it when Stones "play" it to death as in Stuttgart or Berlin with a lot of brass like a circus number other prefer a more musically version as it was played in the studio.

I dislike the "play me 8 minute to death" version of this tour. But at least it's not only Satisfaction that is dead... Seems these days they are only a cover band of themselves!

Satisfaction is one of those songs that either smokes or fizzles, at least when played live. I don't think that it's dead yet. It's IORR and Miss You that are dead, at least in my opinion. smiling smiley

I wouldn't say that the Knebworth version is great, but its interesting. It has a really loose feel. It was the first time Ron played it infront of a crowd. It must have been a rush for him.

It has a wild crazy rocking feel! They barely keep it together, but they do....it's something special about those performances when RS are dancing on an edge. Same goes for Satisfaction from Philadelphia 1978, as Rooster often points out. It's a great listen, that one too. (I don't have the entire Philly 78, only parts of it...can't find the CD release anywhere)

they opened with it in Melbourne.. and I gotta say... it was fantastic. I wasnt expecting it.. and then the dirty riff comes outta keef, and we're on our way! Its a great way to get the crowd jumpin early yno? And talk about on yer toes, I definately wasnt expecting them to open with it.

I almost never listen to the record but in Stuttgart it was just great, contrary to the really dead version of Tumbling dice, the lacklustre Miss you, os Sympathy for the devil which is now a choreographed pop song.

AC '89 was the last great live version

remember in 89 on Satisfaction when they did that " Can You hit me Hit one time... Hit me two times.... Hit me three times...." that was kind of cool. Is there a particular song that was inspired by? It sounds like a James Brown type of thing.
Ive heard a song by the band Sublime where they do that on it.

It's dead, as are a lot of warhorses (Miss You, IORR, BS, YCAGWYW, TD, SFTD, HTW). Most warhorses' recent versions are way too long, have too much brass, bad solo's and just don't sound inspired. Plus we've heard them too many times in the last 15 years.

Re: Satisfaction is dead

Yes - the setlist was much better in Circus Krone or Vredenburg ...... but people - that´s not the way the Rolling Stones do their world or europeon tours...everybody knows.....

if you go to a stadium concert you should know what you get and you won´t get the rare tracks - but anyway why don´t you just enjoy satisfaction and other hits they play - btw - I prefer also those other numbers - but - still the Rolling Stones are still HOT even if they "only" perform Satisfaction......

It is as alive as you want it to be. Just in the same way that Keith says he is able to find new ways to play it, you can find new ways to enjoy it. Try it sometime in the car, or on your computer. Turn up the volume and enjoy one particular part of the song - Brian, Keith, Charlie, Bill, Mick - and focus on that for the entire song, and that will change the listening experience that you have.

No song is ever truly dead - I think we as listeners have changes in listening tastes - and when we feel as though a song has been beat to death, we immediately reserve the opinion that it can no longer be of any value.

The song will never die for me. I will be hearing it live for the second time this fall, and I'm looking forward to it more than anything else.

When I went to my first concert, I felt that I was experiencing a moment of history when I heard Satisfaction for the first time. It was on the B-stage too, which made it especially cool. I thought of myself as becoming a part of history, which was a fulfilling experience.

But more importantly, it was The Rolling Stones, and I was hearing Satisfaction. How many people in their lives can even say that?

Some. But not many.
