Why is Keith always on the right side of the stage?
Date: August 5, 2006 01:16

So, probably a stupid question, but has Keith always on the right side of the stage? It was that way at all 4 shows I attended this tour. Has it always been like that? Let me know!

Because he is on rightside from '63, just a habbit I think.

Maybe to be next to the snare drum & the bass
and yes, I think he's been there ever since they started

excellent point. he has better eyesight on his right eye. That way he can keep an eye on Mick.

It's really the left to him...

You all know the old thing of good guys
wear white and hang out on the right.......Left is the outlaw side.

Nowadays he's more often at the left side...The right side became Daryl's side.

Because that's where his guitars are.

Musicians correct me if I'm out there. He is on the right side because he is a righthanded guitar player. If you're in show business, are one of the stars (= not Ronnie these days) and everything, in a lot of instances, you'll point your "axe" so that it (and the guitar) is oriented towards the public. Sort of a guitarist body language.
Pete Townshend was there, Martin Barre too. Who else?

maybe because it's more comfortable to sing with Mick on the mike
if Keith was on the left side, then, Mick would hurt every time with Keith guitar

true but irrelevant (ie: that's not why his amps are to Charlie's left)

As the rythm guitarist he is closest to the high-hat of the drummer, and the high-hat is the one that's keeping time and holding the beat.

I've studied old tapes of the Stones. He's always been on Charlies left, that's the right side for us in the audience.
In Amsterdam, he was also on our right side. But he RAN like a madman over to the left on the runway - looking very young, fit and energetic. And HAPPY. And BTW: Why would Keith want to be on the WRONG side. Let's put it this way: He's on the WILD side. Great to have him back.

On the left site there`s a huge air blower, in Amsterdam it was very hot, so i think it`s more a thing of coolong down for him.

Sorry, but you're positively wrong. They had no airconditioning for the first 30 years or so. In other words - that's not the reason. He needs to be near Charlie's hi-hat. Keepin' the pace. That's also why we sometimes see his back, when he turns to face Charlie - right in front of rocks greatest drummer.

You'll find Keith's guitar on every record always in the right channel.

Most of the right-handed guitar players I could come up with are playing on the right side (as viewed from the audience) - Keith, Brian May, Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Kirk Hammett, Jeff Beck... Jimi Hendrix was left handed and mainly (on videos) I have seen him also standing on the left side.

Bill onced said that Charlie is actually following Keith, that's what makes The Stones sound different.

Every band has its stage order, hasn't it? The position of the guys is always the same, look at The Who, AC/DC, Queen, Deep Purple... in fact, I don't know one counterexample.

Maybe reason #1: It's a safety thing. Do not change too many things, you might be confused then.

Maybe reason #2: In the old days of the early 60s, Keith and Charlie told, the sound was awful bad. The screaming audience was much louder than the amps. So - it was helpful for Keith and Charlie to be close to each other. Just to be able to play and to hear something the other one is doing right now.

well if you only count the ones who stand on the audiences' right then it will tend to come out like that, certainly. :E
but you're leaving out an awful lot of guitarists. as everyone's noted, Keith's been on the audience's right since the get-go;
the equally-right-handed other guitarists in the Stones have been on the audience's left.

There is no reason. The only reason Keith is on the right is because he's not on the left.

I guess it's because he thinks,

"My side is the right side, to be with the amp I love..."

not too funny, I know ;-)

There you go! I knew I was on to something. Also Eric Clapton within Cream. Frank Zappa within the Mothers of Invention (not really as solo act though).

Left handed? McCartney in the Beatles, left side. Tony Iommi in Sabbath, left side... Want some more?

Why the other righhanded Stones guitarists on the left then? Dunno. Keith's always been reaching for the "starry" side I imagine...

Some more RH/right side:

Carlos Santana, Mick Abrahams (original Tull), John McLaughlin...
