Well Stickydion, I don't know if Kanye opened for U2,.
As far as Prince is concerned his style and music was very much influenced by a lot of the same artists that also influenced the Stones, James Brown comes to mind,Tina Turner,Otis Reading, etc.
You are right that they were playing in some smaller arenas in 72, although they played the Garden in 72, l saw them there for Mick's birthday with Stevie Wonder, also ticket prices were much more reasonable.
Still, l think is just bad for whatever credibility they had left(if any)to have Kanye open for them.
Maybe l am living in the past.

I don't think the Stones hope to make money off of Kanye....I don't see it as a marketing ploy, not in the sense that they plan to bring in a lot of Kanye fans and their money....I believe that the Stones introduce up and coming acts to their fans almost as if they are trying to help the act....perhaps they share common managers or agents. Remember Peter Tosh, Living Colour, Black Eyed Peas? These were great acts in my opinion that didn't have a huge following at the time. The Stones helped to introduce them to the rest of us.

Settle down, folks. Stay in the parking lot if you want... this ol' Southern country boy happens to like Kanye.

If he's a rapper, he should be used to ducking so that should help.

Who cares really.

If your going to see the Stones what's the difference?

West opened for U2 and none of their fans bitched about it.

Maybe Kanye can help them sell some tickets.

I say keep an open mind. I thought the Black Eyed Peas would suck. But, I can say with a straight face they were the best opening act (they had Fenway on it's feet) I have ever seen open for the Stones.

ROPENI, i just saw U2's official site. Kanye West not only opened for U2 during the american leg of Vertigo tour, but he will open for them again. ALL their upcoming shows in Australia and N. Zealand. In 8 gigs...

I suppose U2 fans don't bash their favourite band for this "crime". But Stones fans is another story. We can't live without bashing them, everytime and for everything...

Stickydion, l really don't care what U2 fans do or don't, for me Stones were the greatest and to see what they have become, just money hungry old men,it makes me sick and if l pay $450.00 for a ticket l wanna hear Rock AND Roll not a Rap Act.

Anybody recall what happened when Prince opened for them in 81? He was BOOED, HECKLED, and had crap thrown at him. While I doubt that will happen, I imagine Mr. West will be playing to a less than exuberant crowd. Kinda like that load of bollocks that opened in Fresno - can't even remember his name, but he was BORING.

I for one, if he opens at any show I'm attending, will be otherwise engaged in something INTERESTING....

I didn't pay any attention to Brooks & Dunn in Omaha either. Nor Metallica in SF, or whoever that broad was at H. Bowl. Got nothing against metallica - they're pretty harmless. Just not interested.

Kanye West is great - you guys will be lucky to see him. He's not straight ahead "gansta rap," like most of you nay-sayers are implying. He's "thinking man's hip-hop," just like the Stones are "thinking-man's rock.*"

*although a few people on this board who shall remain nameless seem to disprove this thesis.

I am going to the Giants stadium show and actually I think it will be fun... ONLY because it will add to the anticipation for the stones to come on. I am reminded of my 1st Stones show in Philly 81 at JFK and Journey got booooed sooo bad. And when the Stones finally came on the place was nuts. I am hoping for the same here... I know is bad but HEY its the STONES.......

Unfortunately to the masses and to a surprising amount of people on this site, the Stones are the ultimate get drunk or high and party rock band, not at all thinking mans rock. All the talk on this site about when people take bathroom breaks during shows proves that.

If you just want to get drunk at a at show and get crazy, why would anyone complain about the warhorse heavy setlists? I would think if you're drunk, you would only want the warhorses.

Stevie Wonder was and still is a GREAT talent.

Prince- I don't really care for. At least he can play, if you like that style

Kanye West IS AN IMBECILE. Even if he wasn't an imbecile he is the wrong fit

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

I think I'm gonna puke! Why such suckie opening acts? I canot stand it! The Black Eyes Peas sucked, Maroon 5 did too, and going back Ryan Adams was about the worst act I've ever seen open for the Stones! The Corrs were great, Alanis Morrisette was great( too loud but great), even Sheryl Crow was good compared to this rapper crapper! Anyone want to buy 2 tickets in the FRONT!??

70-80% of the opening acts on this tour have sucked or been mediocre in my opinion. Buncha no names for the most part. At least Kanye is someone I've heard of and I know a few of his songs. I admired what he said after Hurricane Katrina. I agreed with it, but even if I hadn't I still would have admired him for having the balls to speak his mind.

I don't listen to a lot of hip hop, but what I've heard of his stuff is pretty good. Not your typical "smack your bitch" hip hop lyrics. His biggest song is about Jesus. I'm with the Stones in that I don't want to talk about Jesus, I just want to see his face. But despite that I think the lyrics are pretty well written and have something to say, which is pretty rare for popular music. Here's the lyrics to that Jesus song - the "devil tryin' to break me down" part seems to be in the tradition of Robert Johnson and countless other blues artists, including the Stones.

Jesus Walks

We at war
We at war with terrorism, racism, and most of all we at war with ourselves
(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the Devil trying to break me down
(Jesus Walks with me) with me with me with me [fades]

You know what the Midwest is?
Young & Restless
Where restless Niggaz might snatch your necklace
And next these Niggaz might jack your Lexus
Somebody tell these Niggaz who Kanye West is
I walk through the valley where the shadow of death is
Top floor the view alone will leave you breathless Uhhhh!
Try to catch it Uhhhh! It's kinda hard hard
Getting choked by the detectives yeah yeah now check the method
They be asking us questions, harass and arrest us
Saying "we eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast"
Huh? Yall eat pieces of shit? What's the basis?
We ain't going nowhere but got suits and cases
A trunk full of coke rental car from Avis
My momma used to say only Jesus can save us
Well momma I know I act a fool
But I'll be gone til November I got packs to move I Hope

(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the Devil trying to break me down
(Jesus Walks with me)
The only thing that I pray is that my feet don't fail me now
(Jesus Walks)
And I don't think there is nothing I can do now to right my wrongs
(Jesus Walks with me)
I want to talk to God but I'm afraid because we ain't spoke in so long

(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the Devil trying to break me down
(Jesus Walks with me)
The only thing that I pray is that my feet don't fail me now
(Jesus Walks)
And I don't think there is nothing I can do now to right my wrongs
(Jesus Walks with me)
I want to talk to God but I'm afraid because we ain't spoke in so long

To the hustlas, killers, murderers, drug dealers even the strippers
To the victims of Welfare for we living in hell here hell yeah
Now hear ye hear ye want to see Thee more clearly
I know he hear me when my feet get weary
Cuz we're the almost nearly extinct
We rappers are role models we rap we don't think
I ain't here to argue about his facial features
Or here to convert atheists into believers
I'm just trying to say the way school need teachers
The way Kathie Lee needed Regis that's the way I need Jesus
So here go my single dog radio needs this
They say you can rap about anything except for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, video tapes
But if I talk about God my record won't get played Huh?
Well let this take away from my spins
Which will probably take away from my ends
Then I hope this take away from my sins
And bring the day that I'm dreaming about
Next time I'm in the club everybody screaming out

(Jesus Walks)
God show me the way because the devil trying to break me down
(Jesus Walks with me)
The only thing that I pray is that my feet don't fail me now

Bring back Chuck Berry ... he's more gangsta than any rapper could hope to be. You have to admire a guy who drives himself from town to town and gets paid in a suitcase full of cash.

Maybe they'll make Kanye PAY to watch them! George Thoroughgood should ALWAYS be the Stones opening act IMO!

My sentiments exactly. The opening act is a joke now. Sit in the parking lot, load up the cd's and go in 30 minutes before the show!

It's a weird choice, that's for sure. It seems to make some sense for Kanye West -- although he sells a crapload of CD's, hip-hop artists don't draw a lot of fans for live shows. THis will give him access to a broader base of potential fans. Doesn't seem to do anything for the stones, though -- sure won't help them sell those $450 tickets 20 rows from the stage.

Ironically, While the Stones were in Tokyo playing two shows at the 50,000 seat Tokyo Dome in March, Kanye West (whose latest album was at the top of the charts) was at some small club on the outskirts of Tokyo. Maybe they struck a deal over sushi.

too bad the Japanese didn't get Kanye; they had to suffer through Richie Kotzen instead. (as if hiroshima and nagasaki weren't bad enough!)

Hey Nikki, watch this clip. It's the kind of clip you watch 20 times in a row at 1:30 in the morning, at least I did.

I was there. He sucked, but he seemed to have one song that everyone knew. That's what's great about Japan. One hit, and you have an annuity. I hear that the Ventures still tour Japan every year.
