Is Undercover Underrated?
Posted by: 12X5 ()

Anybody else think the album Undercover is underrated and unappreciated? I've seen alot of online reviewers bash it but it's one of those types of cds that I can listen to over and over again. It doesn't sound like any other Stones album but it still sounds great, IMO. Very dark and violent, but it works really well as a cohesive album, all of the tracks go together really well. It sounds kind of 80's but not as bad as Dirty Work and Steel Wheels. Anybody else like it?

I think I've seen a percentage of 80 on IORR, loving that album.
Very few online reviewers bashing it.
Of course it's great!

I dont think its under rated. it gets some criticism, some people really like it. and thats about right. Its good, but its not their best.

Yea, it's not as good as Some GIrls or Tattoo You, yet it still has that dangerous, cool Stones-feel.

I love it. I forget about it and then every 5 years or so I'll blow the dust off of it and play it. I like Too Much Blood. I saw Keith sing "I Want To Hold You," (or whatever that song is) in 1997 and it sounded good . Saw them do Undercover in 1989. Good stuff

I think its slightly underated. God I wish they toured behind it. Always wondered what 5 songs they would of showcased. Good album I think not great.

It comes up an awful lot here, so I don't think it's underrated.

It's a pretty bad album, so it's either correctly rated or overrated.

It is quite, yes. But as long as you and I know it's good, who cares?

I once heard him introduce it as "Gotta Hold Ya" in 97, but it's official title is "Wanna Hold You"

Glad to see that I'm not the only one who likes this album!

I think the reason that people don't really pay that much attention to it is because it's not your typical rock 'n' roll record.

A classic. The last true ROLLING STONES album. A unity and purpose to it that each album after it lacks.

It's not an album that I love. It is an album I like.

To recap:

I like it; don't love it.

Undercover is a very good song, Wanna Hold You is pretty good, and I can't stand the rest. Their worst album in my opinion.

Also think it's among their worst. Lame funk tunes, a ridiculous and embarrasing dance track (TMcool smiley, an also embarrasing re-write of Soul Survivor, and although Wanna Hold You was very good live, the album version is too fast and has an outdated New Wave sound. And...who had the bright idea for the drum machines? A bad disc.

Undercover went undercover of the night,
it's underrated, unappreciated and it went under the radar
and under the boardwalk
and now its under my thumb - I still don't love it, maybe once in a while (under some circumstances)

Classic. Pretty Beat Up is the best thing Wood ever wrote (Listen to can't cut the mustard outtakes)!

Is Undercover Underrated?

i dug it out for the first time in 10 years the other day. ehhh. for my tastes, it's not in my top 25 stones' releases. some hilarious lyrics, but perhaps their worst release up to that time. i liked Feel on Baby, Undercover, some bits here and there of Pretty beat up and Must be hell.

i remember being rather depressed in 1986 that 4 of their last 5 records were Emotional Rescue, Still Life, Undercover, and Dirty Work, although i've lightened up on ER and DW since then.

Too slick, however, I do like a majority of the material. Also, some tune sound like familiar older ones. Different record, the title tune has not aged well.

I think the album is underrated.
There are some really great songs on it (She Was Hot, Tie You Up, Pretty Beat Up, Undercover Of The Night).

I never liked the tracklist order though.

The last three songs ( Too Tough, All The Way Down and It Must Be Hell)
have the same vibe, wich make them sound the same.

Putting the album in a different order gives it more variation.

1. She Was Hot
2. Tie You Up
3. Feel On Baby
4. Pretty Beat Up
5. Too Tough
6. Undercover Of The Night
7. It Must Be Hell
8. Too Much Blood
9. All The Way Down
10. Wanna Hold You

Just give it a try and see what you think.

Under Cover is also perfectly suited for a re-release as a Deluxe Edition.
The original art work restored with the stickers in a beautiful gatefold cover.
With all the 12" mixes, a DVD with the the videos and ofcourse some outtakes.

People at Virgin wake up!!

The last true Rolling Stones album, the last one where the music still mattered. The last album that they still were angry, dangerous, rebelious. Jagger's vocals are great, the guitars are great, I truly love this album. Yes, the sound of the album is a bit outdated, but I find it less outdated than Emotional Resque. Undercover, She Was Hot, Tie You Up, Pretty Beat Up, All the Way Down, Too Tough and It Must Be Hell are classics, and Too Much Blood has one of the best bass lines ever. The album is in my top 5 of Stones albums.

ABSOLUTELY! She was Hot would be awesome live. Pretty Beat Up is great. Too Much Blood is a crack up. The title track was superb - particularly the extended mix.

You want an over-rated Stones album - TATTOO YOU. Side 2 is a total BORE. Side 1 is mediocre.

No order top 5:

Beggars
Undercover
Exile
Some Girls
ABB
