my first and last Stones gig
Posted by: Majenstic ()
Date: August 1, 2006 16:59

I saw my first and last stones gig yesterday evening.
The beginning was great, JJ Flash, IORR and oh no not you again pounded out of the speakersets. Bitch and sway were so and so although I like the fact I have heard sway when many hardcore nutcases haven't.
the ray charles tribute-song and keith's songs were boring! Yes, keith was boring. I'd prefer a midnight rambler in that timeplace.
Also got to hear one of my personal favourites in Get off of my cloud =). I went dizzy during sympathy ft Devil and had to get some air so left my spot in the front. only four people in front of me. I had a really good view but it was too crowded up front. anyway, sympathy wasnt as thrilling as i expected it to be. the soundquality couldnt get the solos to the crowd. I normally get in a trance when the solo erupts on the records. Shame sad smiley
missed Start me up but saw brown sugar. YCAGWYW was a bore but i enjoyed Satisfaction.

All in all, sound was pretty good in FOS though the echo was hearable during the ballads. am very happy to have seen my favourite band live but i dont intend to go see them again. the start was really cool but the middle section took too long and this prevented me from enjoying the warhorse-end section as much as i would have liked. For the greatest rock show, im sorry mick and co, its better to go and see Queen and Paul Rodgers. The greatest band remains the Stones!

Please post what you thought of the concert or my amateuristic review

A 17 year old Stones Fan

I think the fact that Get Off of My Cloud is one of your favorites speaks for itself. Plus it sounds as though you were looking forward to the warhorse-end section. That's weird.

All in all, I don't give your amateuristic review much merit.

Wasn't the fact that you were getting a little disoriented and dizzy influencing your opinion a bit? I mean that honestly. I've been dizzy at an event once and even after I felt better, all I really wanted was to get it over with and leave the crowd.

Things like that can really spoil your evening. I know plenty of people who would go a bit nervous (not that I say you were) before an event because they're not used to it and didn't know what behaviour or noise to expect from a crowd.

Stones fan, you say?

And I qoute:

"For the greatest rock show, im sorry mick and co, its better to go and see Queen and Paul Rodgers."

Erm...

OK...

-is it?- the majority of concert-goers are there for the hits/warhorses.

-thats a bit harsh Cindy.
A straight to the point, honest opinion has been given, on a first-timer's concert experience.

It seems you had some troubles with the length of the show.
I agree with Limbostone, getting dizzy spoils a lot of the fun...
As for the songs, it seems to me you have a bit of a problem with slow songs and you perceive them as boring. I was like that too when I started to listen to the Stones...

And - Queen and Paul Rodgers?? Come on...

"its better to go and see Queen and Paul Rodgers" no comment needed!!! Hilarious!!!

...you can always go see the Rolling Stones tribute band in 2010; less
people, more bang for the buck, 21+ songs done by some wannabe's.

Perhaps I was harsh, but that was my honest opinion of his review. He sounds like a casual fan, so I guess for him to come onto a board of RS fans and give a crappy review, it just kind of irritated me.

If he was on here posting a lot prior to this, I would feel differently, and might put some weight into what he has to say, but that is not the case.

Majenstic, go (hopefully next year) to an arena show (Ahoy). Then we'll talk again. And you should have gone to eg Paris for the first time since they didn't want to play in the Kuip in Rotterdam.

Queen and Rodgers, it was a better show. more crowd interaction. more enthousiastic people.
There were people around me not even bothering to clap at the end of songs. doesn't that say it all.
and not finding keith very exciting is a subjective matter. but honestly, how exciting was he? he is a rubbish singer now. he is(was) good on happy and you got the silver. Play that. And me not liking the slow stuff isnt true. AS tears go by was beutiful but YCAGWYW I simply hate. on record and live too.

Thanks cindyC for your hopinion, but judging someone on his favourite stones songs makes me doubt your intellectual level and judgement.

Yes, Paris was better. But the problem is that I'm getting bored now.

Actually, this review sounds pretty strange, because the middle section of a Stones concert is the most interesting one, the one with some surprise in it, and that's the first time ever I hear someone refer to that part of the concert as boring...

A remark like that makes me doubt your level of decency..

I can give you a million more reasons to doubt my intelligence, this was just the tip of the iceberg.

I have an idea.

And never visit this website again! How does that sound?

Cindy, I agree with you...

And I feel bad for this kid,I guess the energy was too much for him, as he said he walked away! He had great seats and he walked away? What fan walks away from a minute of the show? Not me! That is for sure!!

And to not appreciate Keith, that is too bad. Because, watching Keith,is amazing you can see all the love Keith has, when its just Keith and his songs.
Keith is a BadassPussycat!! Too bad this kid missed it.

Well what can one expect when someone says they'd rather see Queen with Paul Rodgers????

Take Care

A nicely evenhanded review from a young fan talking about their favorite band whom s/he of course never had a chance to see in their prime, and is comfortable with that fact.

Who wouldn't look forward to the warhorses their first show? Or first several? They are awesome, and the band performs them consistently well.

Majenstic, Get Off My Cloud is one of my favorites too, and it is sounding pretty good these days. Now, if you like interaction and enthusiasm, lose the whole stadium/arena rock thing and start supporting your local bands in clubs and bars. That's where the energy and new sounds are.

Yes, you can see his love, and it's honestly wonderful, but not every night anymore can you _hear_ him playing and singing well, which is what most of us go to rock concerts for.

sympahty for the devil easily. And im sorry to say this, but the stones dont excell in reliability. There are a few real gems, not 30 gems. that goes for every band. so saying its impossible to pick favourites, thats rubbish

Thanks everyone, even lizard for suggesting queenzone.com winking smiley.

i only used the site to get some tips about going to a stones gig, dont use any forums regularly anyway. Indeed, its the warhorses you want to see when going to the stones for the first time, and i loved them and i'll cherish this concert for the rest of my life. it was better than Queen, for me personally, but objectively speaking, queen was the better act

Not liking keith's bit or a certain song is in my opinion normal and i'm sorry some people feel attacked when not agreeing with the stones being fantastic 24/7.
Please stay hardcore fans if you must, however, the judgement of casual fans is better than that of hardcores because they will love the show no matter what. i don't consider myself a hardcore fan but definietly not casual either. i've got every cd, should be fan enough then right?

thanks and enjoy the shows you might still see because this tour is the last. One of em will have to die soon, and as soon as one of m does, they'll call it quits.

cheers Majenstic

hmm, all right, I totally disagree with the poster there. Except for the choice of "Sympathy" as a fave. I think the remedy is simply an immersion in high-quality raw rock and roll to encourage the "Get Off My Cloud" vein, but with other bands. There's no way one could like Queen and the Stones once say the Stooges or Dolls come into the picture.

I was in a similar position as our young poster when I first saw the Stones.
I was 18 yrs old and it was a stadium show. My Dad took me for my birthday; I had grown up listening to Hot Rocks and the early stuff.

At the start, I was looking forward to the warhorses (which there were many), but what I remember most was "Crazy Mama." I was still a neophyte Stones fan, but songs like "Crazy Mama" and "Factory Girl" really blew me away. It opened all new doors for me.

Don't turn your back on the Stones, while every concert might not be the best you ever seen, there's always at least a few gems -- you just have to pay attention.

I think a few people were unfair to Maj here! It's his first concert and of course he was looking forward to the warhorses. I remember when I first saw the Stones back in 95. There were many highlights for me, but I will always remember the bit in Tumbing Dice when I suddenly remembered - shit, I'm here with my heros! I remember that first Satisfaction and the first Sympathy... All were exciting moments, as they should be.

I think it is a sad reflection of some fans that we can't get that same level of excitement without seeing them perform 'rare' material -ps, it's not that I don't think they should perform some (I think Sway is a good example of a song we would all want to see). And just because Maj found Keiths set boring, doesn't make him any less a Stones fan. Keiths set is usually one of my highlights, but I can respect Maj's opinion on that. I think he may have come out with one or two home truths that a few people find hard to swallow.

Anyway, Maj, if you felt unwell I think that will have dampened the event. I would suggest going to see them again - perhaps in Twickenham. They normally put in a good performance on home ground, and tickets are still available.
