I never listen to Emotional Rescue

Can't get into it. So weird Keith dusted off "All About You" for the BTB tour. Should have stayed shelved like "Slipping Away" and later day, "The Worst." How about "Too Rude" or "Little T and A?" They would have been great!!!

Back to the topic, ER is completely out of my rotation. Undercover, on the other hand, is in my car's rotation, only.

All About You is perhaps my favourite Stones song since the 70s. And Down In The Hole, Where The Boys Go, Dance, Summer Romance - listen to them again!

You should keep playing it for She's So Cold at the very least.

I never do either. Not that I particularly dislike it. But some way I just never feel like putting it on.

I like a lot of songs on it! Summer Romance, Send It To Me, She's So Cold, All About You, Where The Boys Go - all excellent in my opinion!

Ok Ringo...I'll give you Down in the Hole...that one at least sounds like a Stones song, going back to their roots...must have been Keith's influence. While Jagger was penning the title track, Keith must have been in a corner with a bottle of Jack wondering what Mick was doing to the band.

Being that I grew up with the classic albums from the late 60's and early 70's....I despised ER and Tattoo You...those albums were the reason I didn't go to any of the 81 tour shows.

After almost 25 years I warmed up to a few songs, not many though in all honesty.

Re: I never listen to Emotional Rescue

Dance (pt.1) has some of the best funk guitar ever by any band. And Mick's improvised lyrics are really cool - great track!

Summer Romance is a cool rocker. Sound like a typical Stones-number to me.

Send It To Me doesn't do it for me. Some cool guitar playing, but the melody and the lyrics are crap IMO.

Let Me Go sounds tired and uninspired, but it's a great song, and Keith's guitars are great in there.

Indian Girl is hilarious the first time, but a really weak song. The geographical references are funny, because they doesn't add up.

Where The Boys Go is punk-ish with an attitude, and I like it.

Down In The Hole is IMO the best song on the album. Great guitars, great vocals, not forgetting the harp - great blues song!

Emotional Rescue is OK, but sound a bit too much like a remake of Miss You, only weaker.

She's So Cold is swinging and cool. Great vocals, but maybe the guitars could have had more punch. Cool licks by Keith near the ending.

All About You is a classic soul-ish Keef-number. Fantastic song.

So sum it up; a good stones record, but not the best.

I see what you mean.. when I was very young, say, six years old, I got the Still Life CD for my birthday!! I listened to it more then anything!! Even to this day it remains my favourite Stones album of all time. Exile On Mainstreet still doesn't do much for me.

Down in The Hole's lyrics are by Mick. They basically wrote that song on the spot in the studio and did it in a couple of takes

I rarely listen to it either. I love Down in a Hole, She's So Cold and All About You. But there are a lot of weak songs on it. Summer Romance, Send it To Me are both very average, nothing special. And Where The Boys Go is just terrible IMO.

You can't compare era's period...68/72 ,,,78/82 it's a different band.... both great and both capable of sucking....

I always draw a distinction between "favorites" and "best" albums. The former term refers to albums I like, whether the critic (latter term) in me rates them high or not.

Having said that - the Big 4 stand apart from the rest of their catalog as the "best." Emotional Rescue, on the other hand, is easily my favorite Stones album.

I was referring more to the music and inspiration. I have no doubts that Jagger is capable of writing a song like that. But it seems to me DITH would have been exactly the type of song to put on ER to appease Keith, during this era where Jagger and Keith weren't seeing eye-to-eye.

The big 4 should really be the big 5 because Some Girls is also a masterpiece full of great songs, yeah different period but its right up there with their best stuff. Aftermath UK, also should be included.

My Amazon review:

Some More Girls

Emotional Rescue is basically a sequel to Some Girls and if it is not quite as good as that landmark, more in the same vein is not at all a bad thing. Song for song it is not as good as Tattoo You but probably a notch above Undercover and miles better than Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge or Bridges to Babylon.

1. Dance Pt.1 is a disco-rock song of its era with some funny Mick jive vocals. The kind of thing Mick probably felt compelled to create to impress his Studio 54 pals. Interestingly, the band resurrected this track for their Licks Tour club shows and it still sounds pretty good (just don't tell Keith he is playing disco).

2. Summer Romance is a fun rocking song. Sort of a throwback to a 50's-style rocker with a fast tempo echoing the punk rock of the time. Overall, very enjoyable.

3. Send It To Me: A not at all bad pop rock song with a bit of a groove to it. In the tradition of songs like Luxury that attempt Reggae, miss the mark, but end up enjoyable anyway.

4. Let Me Go: Okay, the version here is a fine if not too memorable pop rock song. However, for the 1981 tour the band goosed the tempo and really made this one come alive. See the Still Life live album for the definitive version of this song.

5. Indian Girl: I cannot defend this one. In my opinion, Indian Girl ties In Another Land from the SMR record for weirdest Stones song of all time. It is a lazy, sleepy ode to the female child of a mother / father team of Cuban guerrilla fighters battling somewhere in Angola. Huh? I had no idea Keith and Ronnie were so skilled in the art of Mariachi.

6. Where The Boys Go: A fast, punkish, rocker featuring faux cockney vocal stylings from a slumming Mick Jagger. The good fun quotient is upped a notch by the squealing girl-group backup singers

7. Down in the Hole: Very good, introspective blues song trippy in that the blues the protagonist has seems to be brought on by the fact that he is living in occupied West Berlin in the immediate aftermath of WWII! A total downer in a really good way

8. Emotional Rescue: A big hit that the band seems to disown. This is an epic dance groover ala Miss You. Nifty dreamy talk-sing section where Mick goes on about romantic knighthood in the Arabian desert! This one screams for inclusion on their upcoming tour. Dust this one off boys

9. She's So Cold: My favorite track on the album. Classic Stones rocker that stands toe to toe with their best. It was a great addition to the '81 tour but for some reason they did not include it on Still Life. Love Wyman's bass and Charlie's cymbal clash's on this song and throughout the record.

10. All About You: Fine world-weary Keith ballad

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that song funny. its about a serious subject but for some reason it always makes me laugh, esp the spoken word part at the end.

I like Emotional Rescue...when I first heard it I thought it was going to be awful because it seems to have a bad reputation, but I ended up really enjoying it. Truth be told I probably listen to Emotional Rescue and Tattoo You more than Some Girls.

the song took on new life for me when they played it on Licks. However, I think the "If i was a dancer" Pt 2 of it on SITS blows it away.

Instantly forgettable track with a decent groove to it

Much prefer the studio version. Jagger's laid back vocal is one of the high points of the album and the rhythm is superb. One of the albums high points. The live versions are a noisy, tuneless thrash.

Agree with ya on this one. The lyrics are trite and embarrassing and if the guy who ran onstage at Hampton deserved a clout around the ear from Keith, then I cant see how Mick avoided the same punishment for that gut-wrenching spoken piece in the last verse. Turgid.

One of the best 3 or 4 songs the Stones have done post-Some Girls. A genuine and under appreciated classic with every member of the band in outstanding form.

A bit overrated by Stones purists IMO (possibly an overreaction to the novelty of having a blues song on any Stones record post-Exile), but a fine number that deserves a live outing.

Please dont! Jagger would need to have weights attached to his scrotum to get to within an octave of the notes he hits on this if he was to attempt it in 2006. The weakest lead single of the bands career and some of their worst lyrics ("knight in shining armour/fine arab chaaaahger" indeed!). Redeemed only by some scorching sax and nifty bass worktowards the end.

Prefer the sound of the studio to the live 1981-82 versions for the same reasons as 'Let me go' above. Theyve done it well on the current tour however. An infectious riff and a good track but with respect, "stands toe to toe with their best" is stretching credibility somewhat. Jumpin jack Flash it aint.

I hated this when the album came out, but it grew on me with time. Now, its one of my favourites on the albun. Superb bitter-sweet lyrics and was surprisingly good when played live on the BTB tour.

Agree with Gazza comments, however Where The Boys Go is one of my least favorite Stones tracks ever. To me this is one of the weakest Stones albums right there with Steel Wheels. Dare I say Dirty Work I may even like better.

Down In The Hole is awesome and should be tried live. I also love She's So Cold. Besides that there is not too much on this album that stands out to me.

She's So Cold ranks right behind Rip This Joint and Rocks Off on my list of all-time Stones favorites. Nice slinky groove and really cutting lyrics. I've always thought of the title track of Emotional Rescue as very tongue in cheek, ala Far Away Eyes, and I enjoy it on that level.

Other than that ... I'd rate Where The Boys Go and All About You as good but not great. For some reason I've never gotten into Down In The Hole even though I usually love their bluesier material. I like the live, sloppy version of Let Me Go but don't care for the studio version. The rest is all dreck as far as I'm concerned. Overall, I'd rate it as one of the Stones weakest albums - the only one I listen to less is Undercover.
