ot: what person or band contributed most to metal?
Date: July 23, 2006 08:50

what band or person do you think was most responsible for taking heavy metal to level of popularity it reached?
-maybe it was black sabbath for being the first metal band?

-maybe it was ozzy for being in sabbath and then having a great solo career that sparked a lot of cotroversy?

-maybe it was quiet riot for having the first "metal" album go to number 1 on the charts?

-maybe it was dee snider for testifying against the PMRC at a congress hearing for the right of freedom of speech?

-maybe it was iron maiden or judas priest for starting the new wave of british heavy metal that would spark the thrash metal craze of the 80's?

-maybe it was w.a.s.p. just for having a song called "fu*c like a beast"?

many more possibilities i'm going with ozzy and his black sabbath work then solo career and antics.

what´s about the early slayer or metallica ?
maiden did a lot for "puplishing" metal

imo the roots are i.e. led zeppelin and deep purple

slayer and metallica and megadeth are great too but metal seemed already established by about '84 when those bands started making headway. none of the thrash bands became huge until around '86 and by then metal was already a force.

i never considered zeppelin metal but yes deep purple is but not until gillan sang for them on the album "in rock". i believe sabbath's first album came out before "in rock" did

I'm going to Ozzy and Black Sabbath, my fav band after the Stones.
The first five Sabbath albums are simply awesome and put the basics to metal. Ozzy in his solo career with Randy made two great Lps: Blizzard Of Ozz and Diary Of A Madman. I love Bark At The Moon, a classic heavy rock song, too!

The term Heavy Metal was originally used by
William Burroughs in his novel Naked Lunch.
The term "heavy metal thunder" was used by
Steppenwolf in their 1968 hit Born To Be Wild.

Link Wray....Blue Cheer....MC5...Led Zepplin surely all
contributed to the early sound and image of Heavy Metal...

Well, after Brian Jones had nailed the slide guitar in "I Wanna Be Your Man", the route to metal was wide open.

Rockman does not only provide great eye candy, he's also well read and well spoken! Great, Rock!
I just love "Naked Lunch". Burroughs in general, actually. He must have been a heavy inspiration for so many rockers. From Keith to Bowie. His way of life and his writing technique. Not a particularly healthy man, but he had a colourfull life.

I think Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple actually, 'cos lots of people wanted to use their guitar as a wanking-tool after seeing them.

Black Sabbath. They single-handedly invented the genre.

I agree with rooster, great post Beely. But what about early Kinks (You Really Got Me, All The Day, etc.)? Wasn't that really the beginning of metal?

Also, don't forget the Yardbirds. Didn't they have some decent guitar players?

this is a no brainer: black sabbath

Re: ot: what person or band contributed most to metal?

some of these bands i've never connected and still make no connection to metal. i've never heard any member of a metal band say jimi hendrix, the yardbirds or jeff beck were any influence. if any band before sabbath is mentioned some people say led zepplin which i somewhat agree or mountain. every so often even the rolling stones get a mention as does aerosmith and deep purple but the turned more metal sounding after sabbath's first album came out. the main people i hear mentioned are black sabbath, deep purple, rainbow, dio, judas priest, iron maiden, metallica, accept, motorhead, saxon, diamond head, venom, megadeth, slayer, van halen, yngwie malmsteen, uriah heap, w.a.s.p., motley crue, twisted sister, quiet riot, ratt, ozzy, mercyful fate, anthrax, fastway and king diamond. if you asked any metal head who helped create, pave the way for and make popular heavy metal thats who they would name. not sure any would name hendrix, the yardbirds, the kinks, lou reed, MC5, blue cheer, maybe steppenwolf though.
