For those of you who missed it, it was announced on "Canadian Idol" last night that the 9 remaining contestants will all be covering Stones songs next week. It should be quite interesting to see what the choices are. Did anyone here who receives the program watch it last night?

wow now we will get to see who the real idols are in the music biz and that is of course the stones who have defied time and obstacles to still be on top of the music biz after years of seeing young promising bands dissapear from the market. The 9 remaining contestants will have a good catalogue to choose from over 500 songs of which contain the jagger richards compositions the most successful in rock n roll history. the songs many of which are blue collar is what rock n roll is all about and i am glad they will pay tribute to some of the songs in the hope of making it big thenmselves. It will be interesting to see next week's show. Get ready Halifax i will bring a truck load of signs one of them will be Free Lobsters For Mick And The Gang.

It should be a very interesting show, to see how these young people handle the songs. I hope someone chooses to cover "Angie".

OK everyone, FYI, the following article titled "Eye On Idol" is a summary of the show taped last night in Toronto, as told on the Canadian Idol website (http://www.ctv.ca/idol/gen/Home.html) . I actually managed to score a pair of free tickets to this event through the office for my wife and I. Truth be told, not a bad performance by most, though certainly nothing can truly match the originals. The nine songs that were attempted were:

Time Is On My Side
Paint It, Black
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Gimme Shelter
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Wild Horses
I Got The Blues
Miss You
Start Me Up

"Eye on Idol"

Whether natural rockers or crooners forced to step away from their comfort zones, the Top 9 rocked the stage of the John Bassett theatre Monday night to the raucous beat of the Rolling Stones. Choosing songs that spanned from the band's first U.S. Top 10 hit in the 1960s to a barn burner from 1981, they howled, stomped and swaggered in the hopes of impressing their fans enough to keep them around for another week.

"I think these words of the greatest rock and roll band in the world can be (sung)... a million times," said judge Zack Werner as the singers got ready backstage.

"The songwriting is phenomenal. Because it's so signature, tonight is the chance for people to show whether they are a wedding singer or a headliner and the next Canadian Idol."

Chad Doucette kicked off the shakedown with "You Can't Always Get What You Want." He took the show right to the heart of the audience, literally, walking to the centre of the theatre to serenade a group of fans waving the flags of his home province, Nova Scotia.

"It's interesting to me because you'll take a song and always put the Chad flavour on it, which I really appreciate" said Sass Jordan. "You changed the melody a bit, but it was killer."

"What I find amazing about you is that you understand the signature of your voice," said Farley. "No matter what genre of music you're singing, you maintain those Chad-isms and it's really cool. You can't dance, though, bro. You need to learn how to dance."

Next up was Eva "Le Dragon" Avila. With her performance of the often-covered ballad "Wild Horses," she once again put her unique stamp on a timeless classic.

"I think you're one of the few people in the Top 10 that I would actually like to hear sing for three solid minutes and see what you do with the song... but I really like you're too focused on... play acting to the camera," said Zack to a loud chorus of boos from the audience. "But I'm right, and therefore I'm ok with the booing."

"You're not a grit rock and roll singer, so for us to expect you to sing it like that would be wrong," countered Jake. "I'd love to hear you sing the whole version because I love to listen to you sing."

After hearing countless competitors sing weak versions of "Paint it Black" during the Top 100 week, the judges must have been wondering how Tyler Lewis would spin the difficult song. They had nothing to worry about -- his powerful performance reminded them why he'd finished that week with flying colours in the first place.

"No one's evolving and developing at a faster rate through this competition than you are," said Farley. "You've got it down pat. I'm really pleased."

"I had to look up to see if we still had a roof because you blew the roof off this building," added Jake.

Despite delivering 1971's "I Got the Blues" with elegance and style, the judges thought Sarah Loverock could have used the access to the Stones' massive catalogue to pick something a bit further away from her preferred blues style. Zack mumbled incoherently for a second before reminding Sarah she's now in the "world of anti-blues."

"You are without a doubt the best singer in the competition in terms of technical ability," said Jake. "I know you can sing that way, it would have been nice for you to show us another side. But, you did a great job singing the blues."

"You sing a lot in your lower register... which I don't understand," said Sass. "When you go into your higher register, you blow the roof off. I thought it was cool, but I didn't think it was fabulous."

After delivering "Jumping Jack Flash" with pure determination in his eyes and a spring in his step that was even bouncier than usual, Brandon Jones finished to an even more dismal round of comments than he had received in previous weeks.

While Zack thought he had "sold" the song well enough to make the ladies in the audience scream, the others weren't so kind.

"That wasn't my favourite performance of yours because I think that song needs a more staccato approach," said Sass. "But you've got a lot of fans."

"That was a really smart song choice because, honestly, there wasn't a lot of room for flaws," added Farley. "I honestly don't see you competing beyond where you are now. You've done a great job with what you have, but (the competition is) getting really intense."

With a hairstyle that just screamed stadium rock, Ashley Coulter and her shaggy new mullet showed she was definitely ready to step up the intensity. Singing 1970's "Gimme Shelter," the spandex-clad punk princess danced across the stage and ended the performance with a chorus to end all choruses.

"To some extent it seemed like the first half of that song was just an excuse to hit that note," said Zack. "I think since Pat Benetar... there hasn't been somebody like you. I honestly think with the right material you could be a world-class rock star."

"I couldn't wait for you to get to that note, and when you hit that note, I felt it," added Jake. "I felt it like I've never felt it before from you."

Not to be outdone, Rob James kicked his characteristically soulful voice into rock-on mode with his rendition of "Start Me Up," one of the best known rock anthems of all time. After a run of performances with each one better than the last, he delivered once again despite the challenging song choice.

"The obvious thing would have been to do 'Beast of Burden' or something where you could have played with your R & B flavour," said Zack. "But you decided to compete and that's what I'm seeing from you more and more."

"I love it because you played against type and there's nothing I like more on this show than someone who plays against type," said Sass. "Good, good job."

With a hoard of screaming fans in the audience -- including one waving a massive sign reading "Bow Power," Steffi D belted out the 1978 hit "Miss You." She threw in some dance moves, winks and blown kisses -- and her showy style was once again a hit.

"I would rather that Canadian Idol was about the kind of unique flavour that you bring than all the eight-octave contralto nonsense that these shows turn out to be," said Zack. "I dig you completely."

"You actually pay attention to the lyrics," said Jake. "You seem to actually live out every lyric on the stage every night. Nobody else in this show does that."

Closing out the show was he who can do no wrong, Craig Sharpe. Singing the Stones' first American Top 10 hit, "Time is On My Side," he added some theatric touches himself, handing out roses to two young ladies in the audience and one to Sass.

"You're a hero," said Sass, smiling while tapping Jake with her newly acquired flower. "It was exactly like we were in the 1960s and I really think that is cool."

"Basically a flawless performance," added Farley. "The only downside is you didn't see Zack's hand outstretched for the rose."

The first ever Idol show in the world to earn rights to the Rolling Stones' collection showed off the superb talent of this year's Top 9, but nonetheless, one must be eliminated. Tune in Tuesday, July 25th at 8 p.m. EST to find out who it will be.
