He's been out of the business since becoming very mentally ill eons ago, right? There is a new-ish PF book out there in retail book-land, and it has some blurbs on Syd that are quite interesting, as well as some more recent photos... makes him seem a bit like perhaps he didn't quite realize he was ever a star. Anyway, very sad he's dead, even if his creative days were over. Perhaps this will bring Roger and David together again to continue the renewal of their friendship. Never liked PF after Roger left.
It makes me sad, I found his music extraordinary and magical even before I was aware of all the other stuff in his life. He really was a blessed channeller of the music that floats around all of us, much the same way as Bob Dylan is, he couldn't seem to help but come up with the good stuff. Until too much LSD blotted all that out. What a waste, nothing romantic about his downward spiral. I hope he was happy in Cambridge for all those post-stardom years.

I find this post rather insulting. Not everyone has the energy and creativity to be active for his whole life. Some people only shine with one contribution to music, arts or literature. I can pay tribute to a musician who has only released one great song or album which means much to me. In fact, there are albums which are great but a repetition would wear out their brillance.
I am no Syd Barret or "early" Pink Floyd fan but I would think of any musicion with respect who has created some great music, even if it was not my style.
I agree salt of the earth. Well put. As a major Pink Floyd fan, this news is rather sad, and as someone else said, I hope Syds passing will prompt Roger and Dave to put aside differences, if not for a tour or album then to at least put closure on Pink Floyd once and for all (I know, thats what Live 8 was supposed to do, and yet they still leave us guessing). Syd...SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!
didn't mean to offend anyone, what i was getting at is yes he was brilliant, but no one was ever gonna hear from him again anyway, and yes its sad,but unless you really up on pf history many don't even know he was alive.
