Unfortunately no, but I did see loads of unknown/unsigned bands in small clubs in London during that time - many in Camden Town, and several at the now defunct Rock Garden in Covent Garden among other places.
Thinking I might be seeing the "next big thing", but ultimately they all remained unknown haha...I can't even remember the names. Then again, spent alot of time in the pubs and it's sort of a blurry period, so maybe I actually did see the "next big thing" without even knowing it.

I remember seeing this as a semi drunk teenager back in the day on Channel 4.
I think for anyone of a certain age, The Word was a big part of Friday nights...
I heard a lot of bands on there for the first time...
