Testimonial/I'm Hooked

I am 40 years old and am just now being introduced to the RS catalogue in depth. The majority of what I was familiar with up until a number of months ago was what can be heard on Hot Rocks. I have always listened, and enjoyed music of most genres, spending most of my time between R&R and C&W. I’m too embarrassed to admit the RS songs that I have no recollection of having heard before (Ok, one has Mick carrying a distinct country-ish twang and rhymes with dead flowers). I honestly feel that I’ve gypped myself out of a lifetime (to date) of pleasure. I’m blown away everytime I hear Carla Olson’s version of Sway with Mick Taylor (which happens to be the first version I ever heard and also happens to be at least once, nearly every day). I’m also embarrassed when I learn that the title of a song that I’ve heard numerous times over my life is not what I thought it was!

I listened to Exile for the first time this weekend (on scratchy vinyl, no less!). Side 2 is amazing and I admit to spending much more time on it! How have I gone through my life without all of this??!! I’ve been a light participant/active lurker on this site for many months and get excited that I quite often know what “you folk” are talking about now (or at least have a small clue). I’m almost afraid to move much further beyond Exile in their catalog because I’m quite sure that their body of work after that doesn’t hold up (even most of the more heavily radio played songs on post Exile albums don’t hold up so I can’t imagine the deeper cuts being as good.) I will continue my education though, and keep my mind open because, after all, it is music.

Prior to watching Gimme Shelter and a few other older clips, I viewed Mick as a caricature; someone just running around stage like a rooster (and maybe he is, now). Having seen the seriousness of which he took his craft back in the day, I’ve gained a whole new appreciation of him as an artist.

As many of you feel, man, what I’d give to see them in a smaller venue, on a smaller stage than what they play now (I think the size of the stage at the Altamont show would be nearly perfect-maybe a tad small). Or, even to be transported back in time. I think both options are equally as likely to happen.

I just felt the need to share this and do apologize for the length.

Mr. Miller, You have seen the light. You're life will never be the same.

Welcome to the club. You can never leave.

>> rhymes with dead flowers <<

hm, that rings a bell! does it go like this: [www.timeisonourside.com]

so the Rolling Stones have finally touched you - that's good! that's what they're for.
(and no they aren't "maybe charicatures now". they are the Rolling Stones.)

....atta boy, WMiller, thanks for sharing. Don't be embarrassed, though, for what you may think is a late appreciation for the Stones. We all take different paths in life. Instead, you should be proud of yourself for having a healthy curiosity for new music, albeit 35 year old new music. I'm still learning stuff about the Stones every day. I guess we all are.

I believe there's a correctional center where we normally send poor souls like Mr.Miller for redemption. I mean I feel sorry for him and all, but there should definitely be penance for 40 years of sinning, no?

I think Baboon Bro might need to go too. He was also a late bloomer, if memory serves.

Rooster - I didn't say I've spent the last few decades locked in a closet! (Though I do have a similar lack of knowledge depth with Peter's band too.)

Speaking of Jimmy Reed, I was listening to a little bit of him over the weekend too. I like Elvis' Big Boss Man and wanted to hear Mr. Reed's version.

I see. Isn't that the opposite of male obtuseness.

good point - but once you make it past 50, the intuition/trust issue won't matter, 'cos nobody will care anymore....you have that to look forward to!

I don't think it's an actual age when they stop caring, it'll be whenever my tits fall. That seems to be how it usually works.

do I have a choice? sounds like your experience trumps

it should, but please let my unpleasant experience be a cautionary tale for all of you. I took one for the team on that one.

team player, eh? how many on the team?

I said "FOR" the team, not "FROM" the team.

You're experience as the team "bat boy" probably messed you up a little, causing your confusion.
