The best side in the competition as far as I'm concerned has been Argentina, but there have been plenty of occasions before where the World Cup has been won by a side who werent the best team (1974, 1982, 1990 etc) but who hit form when it mattered.

Portugal and Italy are two quite ordinary sides to have reached that stage of the tournament (Brazil and Spain were both better). Germany have been surprisingly good and France started abysmally but going by their last two performances, against quality sides who were expected to beat them, they will now take some stopping. I personally hope they win it as it will be a fitting end to Zidane's career.

England were disappointing throughout the tournament, even if they got the results up until today. With the players they have at their disposal, to underperform like that was unforgiveable as that tournament was there for the taking. Eriksson had what was probably the strongest England starting eleven since 1970 at his disposal and he blew it. His ridiculous decision to take only 4 forwards to Germany - two of them half fit and one a 17 year old novice who he was never going to play anyway - blew up in his face.

Just one thing I dont agree with you here is Brazil better than Italy. Italy played shit against Australia and was weak against US but played good against Ghana and Ukraine and fair against Czech Rep. Brazil on the other side have had an easier group, still played fair only against Japan, both Croatia and Australia deserved at least (at least) 1 point. Was embarassing against Ghana and finally met a team able to score and went out and rightly so.

The problem with Brazil is also the hype of the media that throws smoke in the eyes. Italy is under the fire of everyone for the "catenaccio" that actually was played only agaist australia (ten against 11) while Brazil can go away with the "futbol bailado" even if, like against ghana, they defend with 9 players on the line of the box and dont ever cross the middlefield line (if not for score against an ingenue ghana defense with a very "high line").

As I see it now:
France and Italy are going up
Germany has little more to give in the tank but it could be enough to get to the final
Portugal is the weakest (because they dont have who scores) but Solari is very smart and experienced in these situations.

i like the lads Neil Young t-shirt

"Well I remmenber during the all week , some English press demanding that Figo should be banned !!! So you are used to that sort of behaviour!!"

and why did they want him banned ? was it because he headbutted somebody and didn't get sent off for it ? or did the press make that up ?

our press are worse than most. you'll never get an argument out of me about that

I'm sorry for Mick but I think it was lucky enough for England to reach the quarter final. Seemed as if the players weren't fit enough with a Beckham only having fitness for half of the game. And if it comes to penalty shotout we know that England won't win.

BTW. the guy to the right looks more than Rooneys father!

Portugal hardly play fair - Figo SHOULD have been banned for headbutting an opponent! Fifa just didn't have the courage to ban him because there would be an outcry as Portugal already had two players banned for the England match.

And Ronaldo is a disgrace - diving, trying to get opponents booked and so on. He does that in every game, both for Portugal and Manchester Utd. Didn't you see his wink to a team mate after Rooney's red card?! He knew exactly what he was doing. And to do that to someone who is presumably a mate - they both play for Manchester Utd, remember - that is pretty dispicable.

To andy js and gregsmart79
I really happy for both of you,you finally got a scapegoat...I will end up my post about football , cause this is Rolling Stones forum , not a football forum , But before I do so, I will have to answer you!!
If I was the loser of the match, the first thing I should do , should be to congratulate my fellow English IORReans, none of the English did it.
Instead you came with appologies about the red card , the lack of fair play , the head from Figo (I think that if it was a headbutting FIFA shuold take action ,regardless of how many players were already booked before, it was a lean on his head ( see it again), but nobody mention that Van Bommel took at least a couple of secondes before falling , because he was sure what was the best reaction , and because he was such an bad actor he decided to fall, or the dives from Robben!!)
No one mention the fake interviews that came from the English press about the supoosed Portuguese statements , who had the intention of disturb the team...well it must be a new concept of Fair Play
No one mention that if it was Roony who had been hit on his balls by Ronaldo , I got my doubts if Ferdinad or Neville (Man Un team mates) should do the same thing ,maybe they shouldnt , after all they are angels...
Its sad to see and hear the treaths that i been hearing here on IORR about what you gonna do once the Premier league is back.. like meetin Ronaldo on a alley and break is knee, or shouting him , or even Rooney breaking him in two once he´s back (If he´s back, Hopefully on his way to Real Madrid)..well the Shouting , breaking his knee or breaking him twice thats Fair Play...Dont you ear on yourselfs !!

You Forgott that like the Swedes , Portugal doesnt lose with England in 40 years and that baby , must hurt
One final thing ,I live in Algarve , and in my my neighbourhood ,lives hundreds of English , and all I meet last night were real gentlmens, without escuses. like I should expected from you...

don't think he'll set foot in Old Trafford again, Gazza.

he was angling for a move, to Spain, before the W.C.
His 'fair play' behaviour on saturday, will secure him, his move.
He is being villified for his behaviour.

I wouldn't exactly say Mr Scolari congratulated the French last night and accepted defeat gracefully whilst having to be restrained from the match officials!

Well the Portuguese, and Ronaldo in particular, certainly watched the dives from Robben, as they pulled off some quite spectacular ones last night. And not only the dives, but the players pleading with the referee to give a free kick when they know fine well that their team mate dived.

It's not just the English press - the French press, amongst others, have also highlighted the issue of Ronaldo's blatant cheating. And it seems from their reaction last night, the French fans were pretty disgusted by it, too.

As far as I'm concerned, the portuguese are the worst I have seen in a long while when it comes to cheating. And to read comments from Ronaldo this morning saying how the referee was biased against Portugal - well, what does he expect with behaviour like that?! Portugal got what they deserved last night - absolutely nothing!

I wonder if Mick's going to attend some matches during Euro 2020. Maybe not because of all the the covid regulations, but who knows.. he's in England right?

If he’s here, he’ll absolutely be there, I’m sure. It’s almost a tradition for the camera to zoom in on him at some point at these tournaments!

They’re considering a vaccination-passport system for Wembley matches, I believe. That way, it will allow maximum-capacity. Fingers-crossed!
