Ronnie played fantastically on the tour of '76 as all the recordings available prove (not that he doesn't play great on the current tours...)
It was as if to show what skillful and versatile guitarist he was after MT had left the band. Interesting, isn't it ;-)

They really played Münster (that's in Westfalen, a part of Germany if I'm not mistaken) on that 76 Tour....unbelievable. Must be a private pic (?) or from a newspaper article. Could hardly have been Munster as they didn't play Ireland on that tour...

Great to see all these rare photos in the various guitar threads. I love 'em!
Keep 'em comin' :-)

...........a mine of useless information..........

Oh yes, I meant Münster, I forgot about those 2 dotts...
That's true, Ronnie played great in 76, it's Mick's singing that year, that's not up to par. The 1st Münster show was really really sloppy...there's so many mistakes, all over the place.

Erik, they played 2 shows on that day in Münster. The early one was my first Stones concert. I was 13 years old. Do you know from which show the pictures are?

We forgot one Zemaitis: Wood plays a Zemaitis on the Miss You video. It's hard to see, but it's a Zemaitis for sure.

the gallant Bill Wilson says it's cool to re-post his photo of Keith's new Zemaitis here -
it's from the second London show, where Keith used this guitar for She's So Cold.
he also used it for Dead Flowers at Slane Castle; and it's briefly visible in the trailer for Shine a Light.
any details about the model/specs will be very gratefully absorbed!

To Heinz,

thanks for sharing it. I attended the second show there. I remember the Stones were still playing the first show when we arrived at the Münsterlandhalle.

BTW 16 years later, ín 1992 Tony Zemaitis built a 6-string Metalfront for me and I still love playing it almost every day.

5-String Heart Hole Zemaitis, played by Kurious Kurt. And the same guitar in Albert Lees' hands. Probably on of a kind accoustic with 5 Strings only. Used for the Kurious Kurt and The ZugZug Club Ronnie Tribute record.

... so do you have any shots of Ronnie's heart-hole Zemaitis?
Toru-a already posted links to the Kurt photos (above);
and the Zemaitis sites have lots of good photos of fine instruments in capable hands:
[www.zemaitisclub.com] and [www.zemaitis.net]
but these threads are trying to be about Keith's & Ronnie's guitars - thanks!

Got a Video here. With Ronnies Guitars and his Hearthole Zemaitis.

And by the way the Guitar on this photo isn't Keith's guitar it used to be Kurt's Guitar. The replica of Macabre and the only existing real Zemaits of this kind.

As well as this 5-String Diskfront isn't Ronnie's. The guitar varies in shape and other details from Ronnie's.

Here is a replice of Ronnie's Diskfront

I've seen that there's a lot of missleading information and speculation going on about these guitars especially about the Macabre. As you can see there is quite strong connection about the posting I did before. And it relates heavly to Keith's and Ronnie's guitars. Since the guy with the hearthole Zemaits was the former owner of these guitars.

Cheers

yeah thanks - i noted when i posted it that it might be a replica,
so thanks for confirming that.

... do you mean that this replica is the same one Keith was using on the ABB tour?

As far as I am concerned he played a Japan Zemaitis unless he bought the guitar from maverick (www.maverick-music.com), where it was for sale for a long time. Guess this is reather unlikely. Kurt's replica was built by Tony in the 80ies.

I believe Darryl played a Z bass at the last London show - towards the end of the show, but I wouldn't know the number, really.

Nope, the model RR played has a narrower waist and a more airy upper horn.
That new Metalfront Ron plays here exactly has the bodyshape of the Discfront.

You're sure? Maybe its the metallic colour instead of the usual black, but Wood's new one pickup more looks like this model:

It's smaller than the disc front, and resembles more the RR guitar.

There's three 'original' Macabre's: one for Keith, one for Kurt, and a third 6-string version, built when Tony Zemaitis built Kurt's guitar.

All Zemaitis currently used by the Stones are the new Japan versions.

Wood's metallic one-pickup guitar and the blakc guitar keith's used on London are all prototypes.

Hi Mathijs,

are we talking about the same guitar?
I have not seen Ron playing a 1 p/up Z on the BB Tour.
The "new" Z Ronnie uses e.g. for "Can't you hear me knocking" has 2 p/ups.
The bridge p/up looks kinda P90-style & metalframe to me and the neck p/up seems to be a singlecoil Stratstyle & metalframe mounted in reverse angle.
Approx. the same angle as on a Mosrite Ventures model.

To with ssoul,

thanks for the pics. That's the guitar I was talking about.
The 2 p/ups can clearly be seen I think.
There are some other shots of that guitar where you can see that it's waist is
not that narrow as the waist is of the guitar in the link that Mathijs was referring to.

I still think it has the same bodyshape the Discfront has.
But that isn't really that important, because to me these new guitars aren't no genuine Zemaitis guitars anyway.
Tony retired making guitars in 2000 and since he passed on 17th August 2002 no new Z-guitar can be made.
You can buy a license of course but whatever you do - it will never be the real thing.

Please don't get me wrong!
I'm not saying that these new guitars aren't very well built instruments. But though the company has purchased the license
to build from the Zemaitis family and people Tony worked with are involved (Danny O' e.g.) to me these new models are just legal made copies.
So I never ever would swap my genuine Z that Tony built for me in 1992 for even ten of the new models.
Just my 2 cents.

Yeo, you're absolutely right, the body is the same as his disc zemaitis, and there's indeed two pickups. I must admit that I do not follow the new guitars of the Stones that close anymore, as they play so many new models these days. You can see Wood play ten guitars tonight, and another 10 tomorow.

I agree with you that the new Japanese Zemaitis guitars are not 'genuine' Zemaitis guitar. They're not handbuilt by Tony, and by definition can never be real Zemaitis guitars.

But, as good Zemaitis guitars could be, he also build lesser guitars. And, while Zemaitis guitars always look good on stage, they don't always necessary sound really good. In my opinion, while a metal top looks great, and while it ads something to the sound (or better: deprives it of the low end), it's not the best sounding guitar one can imagine. The same goes for the pearl tops -a quarter inch of pearl inlay does not really benefit string vibration. Duraluminium pickup surroundings look nice, but they hinder the transfer of string vibrations.

With the new Zemaitis it's a bit the same: very well build guitars, they deliver 'that' look on stage, but can sometimes sonically not as good as one would expect.

Totally agree with you Mathijs. You know your stuff.
Though I said I never want to part with my Z, I must admit that the best SOUNDING guitar I own is a featherweight Tele built by a well known master-luthier.
