Keith always says that he almost exclusively plays acoustic at home.
He also admits to never having been particularly technical with regard to his kit.
He's obviously learnt down the years what works and what doesn't and this, coupled with his wonderful ear for tone and vibe, is what has shaped his sound. He'll spend time looking for the right sound and try anything that's at hand to get it.

Dig this pic of the band recording circa spring 1969...

Olympic Sound Studios - Spring 1969 - probably by Eric Hayes

From left to right we see, Hiwatt, possibly WEM Custom 15 or Westminster MKII - Fender Showman.

Here's some pics of the possible WEM amps.

Custom 15

Westminster MKII

can you figure out which one keith is plugged into?

can't imagine using Hiwatts for recording; they're so loud. the Dual Showman is no slouch in that department, either.

Yikes, have fun trying to follow those cables!!!

But I reckon both the Hiwatt and the Fender are atleast switched on due to the mains lights standing out in the photo. It looks like there's a booth set up behind Brian so there could also be an amp in there as well.

Its funny how this thread always hangs in. Not meant as a complaint at all just an observation. its like the "what are you listening to" thread.

Wasn't the HiWatt a bass amp?

Some nice shots there. Thanks Yer maj'.

I think we've seen some of those posted earlier but not others. There's a really nice square on shot of the heavy magnet Celestions which would have answered a couple of questions a lot earlier ;^)
But what are the speakers in picture 058 ?

The pictures revealing the EQ settings on the Twins are cool too !

Nice find, His Majesty.
Looks like this is earlier, from the US leg of the tour - so I believe we haven't seen them before, Spud.

Yeah, what are those black speakers?
that amp was later replaced with the liver coloured amp, wasn't it?
even the left amp seems to have been replaced later...

later on...

On top of the guitar case there is a Peterson Auto Strobe 490ST - 047- 05 -

The Model 490-ST includes stretch tuning capabilities for enhanced tuning of stringed or percussive instruments such as the piano, bass, guitar, marimba, steel pan, and others.
Only peterson strobe tuners respond at the speed of light to display relative tuning of any audio source to 0.1 of a cent (1/1000 of a semitone) accuracy.
With the new AutoStrobe models such as the Model 490-ST, students, technicians, and musicians at all levels can utilize automatic (hands-free) note selection for fast, accurate tuning of instruments. This feature also permits real-time display of intonation to improve performance and listening skills while playing.

WIDE SELECTION OF PRE-PROGRAMMED STRETCH FILES - tables with optimized tunings for all piano types and sizes takes the drudgery out of piano tuning.
Up to 31 additional files may be programmed by the user.
AUTOMATIC NOTE SELECTION.
AUTOMATIC IMAGE CLARITY AND CONTRAST CONTROL - internal compensation for optimal viewing over a wide range of source pitch and volume.
IMPROVED CLARITY FOR UPPER AND LOWER REGISTER NOTES - +2/-1 display feature shifts the strobe patterns into more visible middle ranges—bass note patterns can be displayed two octaves higher and treble note patterns can be displayed one octave lower in strobe display.
EASY TRANSPOSITION - strobe patterns appear at the correct note for Bb, F, and Eb instruments.
EXTERNAL INPUT AND THROUGH OUTPUT WITH MUTE - for in-line, silent tuning during performances. ACCESSORIES - external mics, footswitches, and carry cases.

That's correct, it's: Ground Sw, Fuse (3A), Power Sw, Standby Sw, Pilot Lamp, Presence, Mid, Bass, Treb Bright Vol, Normal Vol, Bright In, Bright In, Normal In, Normal In. The jack goes into the low sensitive bright channel. Apperently the left amp (picture 046) is the clean amp, as the right amp's volume is on ~8, driving the power amp in to overdrive.

It's quite surprising that Fender left off the middle tone control on the reissued amps.
in fact I don't get it at all.

It's quite surprising that Fender left off the middle tone control on the reissued amps.

The reissued amp is a different amp then Keith's. The Fender reissue is the '57 low power narrow panel 5E8 Twin, 40 watts into two Alnico Jensen's. This amp never had a mid pot. Keith's Twin is the bigger '58 to '60 wide panel 5F8 twin, 80 watts into two alnico Jensens, with the mid pot.

The biggest difference is that the narrow panel Twin has two rectifiers, and the wide panel twin has one rectifier. With 'only' one rectifier, the wide panel Twin yields more sag and compression when driven hard, making it more crunchy and raunchy sounding.

Thanks Mathijs, now I get it.

but there is a mistake in your definition of narrow and wide-panel.
Keith's 5F8 Twin is actually a Narrow Panel "Big Box" Twin.
the wide panel is model 5C8 and 5D8, built from '53 - '55
at least according to this site.

You're right. Both amps I described are narrow panel, I meant "big box" and "small box".
