Apperently these amps ar quit sought after, with UL-7120 selling for thousands of dollars. Conquerers go for around 1500 euro it seems. That's alot of money for a tranny!

Yeah that's a great site, they've missed out a couple of the all solid state amps though(I recently bought two!).

I wonder if the stones still have these amps, perhaps in those big warehouse's you've mentioned previously!?

According to the time frame, 1963, and the information in my Vox book, those amps will be the T.60 bass and two AC30 Twin's.

PART THREE: Jumpin' Jacks Banquet

In 1968 the stones continued to use the all solid state Vox amps. Of course, these amps were not used exclusively. Various other amps from the past appear to have still been around and in use throughout the 'solid state' era, such as the Fender Dual Showman and older Vox AC30.

Late 1967/early 1968 also saw Keith introduce a new amp to his collection, the rare Triumph Silicon 100 combo. This combo was first released circa 1965 and featured tremolo, fuzz and top boost. The speakers were four Goodmans 12inch 30 watt with treble cone. The amp was solid state and used 19 silicon devices, with no germanium transistors or valves.

Triumph Electronics actually built amp chassis etc for Vox amps such as the aforementioned ul- series.

The earliest footage of the Triumph amp is in the Jumpin' Jack Flash promo video.







During the Beggars Banquet sessions Keith is likely to have used the Vox AC30, Vox Supreme and the Triumph Silicon 100 combo.

For the bass parts Keith played on the album he used Bill's 75 watt Vox Foundation Bass set up which had a cab with a giant 18" speaker!



Although this is a bass amp, it too had the fuzz/distortion and unique MRB effects onboard as part of the first Normal channel. The fuzz/distortion sound was used for the bassline on Child of the Moon.

PART FOUR: the bleedin' circus

During the post Beggars Banquet sessions in the Autumn/Winter months of 1968 and in to early 1969 the solid state amps still appear to be in use as well as the Vox AC30 and Triumph Silicon 100.

Interestingly Keith is seen using a Vox Supreme in to Bill's 1x18 bass cab at what is likely to be a September/October 1968 'rehearsal'. This set up was used later on at the Rock and Roll Circus.



For the Rock and Roll Circus rehearsals Keith used the Triumph amp, with Brian and Bill going through Fender Bassman/Dual Showman amps...



For the actual filming Keith used a dual amp set up...

The Triumph Silicon 100 linked to a Vox Supreme. Once again the supreme is going through the 1x18" bass amp cab. Quite how the Supreme is being used(it isn't mic'd up for example) I don't know.

For this, his final 'gig' with the stones, Brian used a single Fender Dual Showman, although two amps are set up.



The onset of 1969 is when things start to get murky. There's little evidence to show what was used in the spring of 1969 other than a few pics and quotes.

Tonally however, the Triumph/Vox sounds are still there on record for the tracks recorded pre-Mick Taylor. It has been stated that Keith used the Triumph amp for Gimme Shelter(the tremolo guitar parts at least) and Midnight Rambler has many of the characteristic tonal qualities that these amps offer.

By spring 1969 Keith started to experiment a bit more with amps introducing WEM and later on HIWATT amps in to the fold. Bill is pictured using an early Sound City/HIWATT head and cab during a spring 1969 session.



This is where my stones amp knowledge dwindles to a trickle! I find it pretty amazing that the band used JMI/Vox/Triumph's rather unique solid state amps for at least 2 years!

If anyone knows anything that questions, corrects or confirms what I've posted I'd like to hear from you!

Thanks to a member of the plexi palace forum, it's been pointed out that it's most likely that the stones used Vox UL-760's during late 66 - early 67, not 7120's.

That's a great shot of the back of that amp! Now the questions are:

1) what type of tubes/valves are in them?
2) What speakers are in there?
3) what is the effect pedal on the right? I have never seen that one before!

By the way, there's a total of three amps: an vintage 50's one, a brand new one on the left side in the first picture, and a liver-colored one on the right side in the second picture.

That could be something from Elctro-Harmonix, not exactly a Big Muff because they have 3 knobs - but hmm lets search...

What does keith use the tape echo unit for? I guess SMU and Rain Fall Down?

My guess about the stomp box on the right in the picture is that it could be a fuzz box for satisfaction. I've never seen one like that though and I can't make out any writing from that photo. Does anyone know?

as Keith's guitar technican controls the effects, it might be on most of the time.
He might adjust the level amount of the TTE.
if its used subtle it does have a sweet sound.
but I'm only guessing.

there is another box underneath the Zinky - can't tell what it is - maybe just a power supply.
Then there seems to be an amp channel foot switch between the TTE and (maybe) a transformer.
That seems to be it, for pedal format gear.
but then...
... doesn't that look like a midi control board behind the liver colored amp?
I guess it's for the 19" FX underneath.
a Graphik Equalizer on the top right....

Great detective work open-g!

More detective work - that speaker has either moved position or been moved to another amp or there are more than one keith sticker speakers in existence. If you look at the top picture, you see the sticker speaker is on the right of the newer looking amp. Peering hard at the liver coloured amp, the speaker with a sticker on is on the left. The close up picture of amp 003 shows the speaker on the right. Being black and white, it's hard to tell the colour from the photo, but there doesn't appear to be a tweed pattern. Hence, I'd say it is the liver colour one which is 003 - is that right coocoofor coconuts?

what also confuses me is the fact that there is no wear and tear on that amp.
How can that be an amp from '57?
the tweed amp on the left of the liver coloured one seems genuinely old.
The picture, beeing from 2005 shows 2 amps before the Watkins intermezzo.
So I wonder how much changeing of parts and/or cabinets have been done by the technician.
