Ronnie and Keith both got a handful of new guitars built by John Bolin over the last couple of years. Gretsch-, Gibson- and Supro-Style e.g.
The first Bolin guitar I saw Keith with was the one that was given to him by the Rev. Billy F. Gibbons during the Licks Tour in Hesinki. Ronnie later got his metal Strat. You all know that.
Later the second metal Strat for Ronnie and the other above mentioned Bolins followed.
So I wouldn't be very surprised if that SG is a Bolin too.

Here's a link with some more information:

i know the one you mean, Mathijs - thanks! i hope it's okay that i've quoted you over on shidoobee.
very weird that the Hard Rock Cafe would have Faces tour dates posted next to this guitar, though!
especially when they're claiming it belonged to Keith.

and thanks Phil Good - we have a couple of threads with Keith & Ronnie's Bolins in them around here somewhere ...

Oh silly me!!!
The only thing I can do now is to ask you to be so kind to accept my apology.

>> my apology <<

eek: why, because i've posted like an undercaffeinated nitwit? i'm sorry!
the theory that that SG might actually be a Bolin, not a Gibson, is very interesting -
i hope we can get some more photos of it posted, now that it's been around a while ...

ah, here's one with the headstock included - looks like a Gibson after all, no?

- Bergen, september 1st 2006 (don't know who took it, sorry!)

Love that guitar. Gibson only made 5 of the black ones. It's a very heavy guitar, but what an amazing tone. I know Paul Simon has one. I almost bought a blonde one in the late 90s, and I kick myself for not doing so everytime I see one.

Ron Wood's Black Les Paul, 1978 tour...
Posted by: tomk ()
Date: February 4, 2012 10:01

Any info on this guitar? As far as I know, it showed up on that tour and never appeared again. And Wood said in an interview later that he never liked Les Pauls all that much, and I don't think I've seen a picture of him with one since. It actually may be one of those "hundreds of guitars that the Stones have around" because I've never seen it since. FWIW, I remember at Anaheim he used it on HTW and Star Star. I seem to remember him using the Firebird for ALDL, although I could be wrong. He did use the Firebird for Sweet Little 16, I do remember that.

Not sure if this is the same guitar, but it's a black Les Paul Standard, photo is from '09 I believe (don't hold me to that), playing with Slash.

Here's the FW clip of ALDL with the Gibson I'm talking about. I'm having trouble posting photos. Sorry about that.

I would imagine it's from 1993.

... huh? Ronnie uses LP Specials quite a lot! Standard LPs too, i believe. but maybe you mean LP Customs?
unfortunately the Ratbag Boogie thread about his Gibsons got awfully sidetracked: [www.iorr.org]
but meanwhile there's a 78 shot of him there with a black LP Custom that may be the one you're enquiring about

"I would imagine it's from 1993."

Yes Ron Wood guested on one or more G&R shows in London.

At one show in Tokyo as well.

The black les paul custom used on the some girls tour looks like a typical 1970s version. The carved top is far less contoured than earlier versions, and the headstock has less of an angle than the early ones.

The Les Paul Standard Ronnie uses from about 1993 onwards was a gift from Slash.
I think he even calls it "the Slash guitar"

or just Slash, as we see in this fine thread: [www.iorr.org]
which also mentions that Ronnie's TV yellow LP Special was a gift from Jesse Ed Davis

According to this site it is from 2009. It's Slash And Friends at the Quart Festival in Norway.

Here's the site, with lots of pictures and some more of Ronnie

you can see some photos of the Quart Festival here: [www.rosshalfin.com]
i believe erikjjf about the photo under discussion - probably 1993

Fair enough, I didn't read the whole thing as I could care less about Slash, and his friends. The point was just that it was Ronnie with a black Les Paul after the 1978 tour.

smile: for the record, me neither. just enough to see a few telltale will's in the first couple of sentences.
but anyway here he is with a black LP in 97 - that's a Special, isn't it?

The guitar in the 2nd pic isn't the black Les Paul Standard. The Standard has single binding, where as the guitar in the 2nd pic has double binding like a Les Paul Custom... Maybe it is a Les Paul Custom.

so is the one in the 1997 shot a standard or a Special?

The 1997 pic shows a Standard, I think the guitar in the Budokan shot is the back view of his Duesenberg.

I was talking about that particular LP from the '78 tour. That guitar is another one that seems to have vanished.
