yeah! except for the pickups that's the one Ronnie's got, Mathijs - thanks!
so once you get to see it i'll be delighted to hear more about it on the Zemaitis thread. :E
(and i hope that'll be soon! the Saitama dvd is a joy.)

Reptile here.. yeah.. I might as well just say it..

Erm.. check out these pics from Sheffield last night(I assume these are Gibsons):

What's that? The pictures are pretty bad. A blue SG? Or is it black?

And what's this? I don't really know a lot about hollowbodies.

The SG looks blue on the pics - but of course the stage lighting could fool us.
can anyone who's been there confirm?

The 2 guitars are new to the stage - but are they brand new?
Ronnie was at home after the Twickenham gigs [www.iorr.org]
he might have owned them for a while.

hopefully, time will tell.

The hollow body that Ronnie is playing appears to be a Gibson ES-330.

To me the SG lokked black and it had some ornament (design) on it. He used it more than any other guitar in Sheffield, also for slide. His old metalfront Zemaitis he used un Rough Justice on the B-stage only.

I would love to see a better pic of that SG, there's something odd looking, like it's a custom build, or a Guild SG or something like that. I'm curious!

I wonder why there aren't any press photos around, at least I haven't found any. Ronnie played that guitar on the first two songs, that's when the photographers are there.

What do you think Mathijs? There IS something off about the guitar. a) the part of the neck that joins the body is not typical of SG. That is notorious;ly the weakest part of SG's I know, I have had two and they always f*ck up there, and b) the horns are almost a bit too wide apart IMHO. The red SGs seem compacter.
And there is also an extra knob next to the regular controls.

I was so surprised when I saw Wood with an SG, and later on that ES-330 in SHeffield. He has been on stage for 40 years, abut never with those guitars before.
He must have been visiting a guitar-store in Glasgow or something. Or maybe his luggage was lost that day.

Yes I was suprised by how much he used the SG at Sheffeild.
It sounded great, with a fatter tone than the Strat.

He used it on;

Sway - awesome ! Gooooooooooooooooooooooooo Ronnieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Gooooooooo !
IORR
Sympathy
YCAGWYW

and many more ? - can't remember

I'm sure I heard Mick Taylor style rythym chops on Sympathy at Cardiff! can't wait for the boot !

Ronnie with the SG in Bergen:

It appears to be just a custom shop Gibson.. maybe mr. Woods own design?

any photos of ronnie playing epiphone junior ( on concert with rod stewart, royal albert hall) ???

Borna, try the "Ronnie's Other Guitars" thread - there are a couple of shots of him with Epiphones in that one.
(you'll find a list of the various guitar threads if you do a search for "ratbag boogie")

meanwhile: thanks everybody for these great shots of Ronnie's assorted new (or "new") Gibsons!
that [semi?]hollow one especially - i noticed it on different numbers at every UK show from Twickenham 2 onward,
and am pining to know more about it. *is* it an ES-330??

i think i saw the highly ornamented SG at all the UK shows including Twick 1, right?
and was totally freakin *blissed* by that double-Gibson-LP rendition of Live With Me in Cardiff! :E

as has been noted already: i am a persistent sort of sssoul. :E
if that is indeed an ES-330 Ronnie's got there - and i can't see any reason to doubt that
other than my understanding that that's not a very cooperative instrument to use on stage -
i guess it would be a pre-1962 model?

from [www.provide.net]:

Gibson ES-330 Thinline Fully Hollow Electric Archtop
Available: 1959 to 1972 ... (At first glace this model looks like an ES-335, but it isn't anything even close.
Fully hollow instead of semi-hollow, neck meets body at the 15th fret instead of the 19th fret,
and P-90 pickups instead of Humbucking pickups make this model far less than desirable than a 335.
This model was really a replacement for the ES-225, and was not meant as a "cheaper" ES-335.)
1959 Gibson ES-330 introduction specs: Thinbody, double cutaway, fully hollow body, 1 or 2 P-90 pickups with black covers,
tune-o-matic bridge, trapeze tailpiece (Bigsby vibrato optional), laminated beveled-edge pickguard,
single bound top, back and rosewood fingerboard, pearl dot fingerboard inlays, neck joins body at 15th fret,
crown peghead inlay, sunburst or natural finish.
1962 Gibson ES-330 specs: Small block fingerboard inlays replace dots, nickel pickup covers
replace black plastic pickup covers, cherry finish available.
1965 Gibson ES-330 specs: Chrome parts replace nickel (including the pickup covers).
1967 Gibson ES-330 specs: Sparkling Burgundy finish available.
1968 Gibson ES-330 specs: ES-335 style neck joining body at 19th fret available as an option. Walnut brown finish available.
1969 Gibson ES-330 specs: Sparkling Burgundy finish no longer available.
Gibson ES-330 discontinued 1972.

That's quite nice research with Sssoul!
But...I maybe wrong, but I can't see (from this angle) that the neck meets the body on the 15th fret....unless I'm wrong, could it be a 1968-1972 model ES-330?

Re: Ronnie's Gibsons
Posted by: with sssoul ()

yeah Erik, i'm not sure about that either -
i think i recall dot fretboard inlays and black pickup covers when i was staring at it at the shows,
but of course so much is going on during a show that it's hard for a sssoul to focus on just the dots. :E
the finish is a bit puzzling too, but i guess i've concluded it's what a natural finish looks like with some age on it.

The last shot of the Sg is by far the best pic yet. Now I see it clearly: IMo it is a straight-up SG off the rack. The design of course is probably unique, and Ronnie might have had it wired. But the body looks pretty regular. I think I will try to get a boot of the shows where he plays this one just to hera it.

so what's Ronnie got there - an ES-335? it sure sounded good!

not sure this is the right thread for this - maybe it is Keith's?! -
but since the evidence so far seems to indicate that it's Ronnie's:
could some of you fine patient knowledgeable & good-lookin Guitar Connoisseurs
have a look at this shidoobee thread, please and thank you?

[p081.ezboard.com]

as you'll see, the Hard Rock Cafe is simultaneously saying that's Keith's sunburst LP
and giving dates for a Faces foray to the US, so ... are they mistaking Ronnie for Keith?
i mean: is that a Known Ronnie Guitar, or a Known Keith Guitar, or neither, or both?

hi with sssoul
How did you get so interested in Keith's and Ron's guitars?

by listening to them all but eight years of my life!
i've got a guitar-resonant gene. which is a blessing, and i appreciate it.

It could be Keith's of course, but not one that has been out in public, or seen on any pictures from studio's or what ever. Further, I have never seen a picture of Ron Wood with a Burst. The guitar does remind me of a Stones guitar though: Mick Taylor's Burst that he used on the '72 tour. Both have visible screw holes behind the tail piece of a removed Bigsby, and the 'unburst' colour and the absence of any flame does remind me of that guitar. Taylor sold that guitar in the mid-80's due to financial problems, but no one seems to know where he sold it to.
