Ronnie's Gibsons
Posted by: with sssoul ()

okay i can't stand it anymore - since no one else has started any Ronnie Guitar Threads ... here goes nothing. :E
i am *woefully* deficient in good shots of Ronnie's guitars, and even more woefully deficient in knowing anything about them,
so i am really counting on all you Kind Patient Learned Ronnie Guitar Connoisseurs to help us all out here.

as a result of causes, i've decided to start with Ronnie's Gibsons; i'll get some threads going about his other instruments too.

so without further ado ... we all know Ronnie's Firebird - but i have no idea what year it's from, when he acquired it
or what numbers he uses it on. all insights will be made very welcome indeed!

Ronnie's uses at least a couple of Gibson LP Specials - there's a black one that i don't have any good photos of,
so if someone has one to post, that would be brilliant, please and thank you!
here's his blond one (or natural or whatever it's properly called) - and of course i'd love to know more about it.
that would be Midnight Rambler they're workin out there ...

i don't know if it's the same instrument in this shot from 82:

i heard Ronnie recently unveiled a new green Gibson LP - i think it was at one of the 06 North American shows.
has anyone here seen it, have a picture of it, know what model it is, etc?

then there's the single pick-up L5S that Ronnie loaned to Keith for the Talk Is Cheap tour.
i know it belongs to Ronnie, but i've never seen him use it - anyone have any photos of him with it, please and thank you very kindly?

It's funny. Whan I saw the title of this thread (thanks again for these things, Ssssoul Lady) the very first guitar that came to my mind was the black LP Custom that Ronnie used on the 78 Tour, but no pic of it did appear! So here it is:

nice one - thanks Bruno! i am always very happy to see a black LP Custom,
especially in a Stone's fine hands. :E what numbers did Ronnie use it for?

At the Anaheim show I was at, he used it on HTW and Star Star
{which I believe is the song they're playing in the picture).
He may have used it on ADTL, but I seem to remember him using
the Firebird for that and Let It Rock, plus Sweet Little 16.
THe various Zemaitis' (and pedal steel) covered the rest.
Funny he's using that as I remember reading an an interview with him
in the late 1980s that he never really cared much for Les Pauls.

I believe the tune they are doing in the 78 pic is @#$%&.

BTW In the shot of Ron with Rod I think that may not be a Gibson. Not sure if it is refelction but the headstock looks like it has the Travis B or the Kramer emblem.

>> BTW In the shot of Ron with Rod I think that may not be a Gibson. <<

on other threads AndrewM and Mathijs (thanks!) have pointed out one of Ronnie's Epiphone Crestwoods -
the one in the shot with Rod looks to me like another one. (but i already said that on the Ronnie's Other Guitars thread, sorry!)

so what model is Ronnie holding in this shot?
and is it the same guitar that's in the background in the footage from the recording sessions on the ABB DVD?

oh my - the good Mathijs has sent me a ton of photos to better illustrate the various Guitar Threads.
i decided to start here, since this thread needs bumping up - i'm still really hoping to hear from someone about Ronnie's Gibsons!

Ronnie with a Gibson Marauder in 75 - the photo's most likely by Lynn Goldsmith.
did he ever use it on stage?
i know that model is widely regarded as one of Gibson's Worst Moments ...

- 1975, most likely by Lynn Goldsmith, courtesy of Mathijs

wow, nice! Ronnie's single-pickup custom L5S - apparently he has two of them,
but that second photo that Erikjjf posted is the only one i've ever seen of him using it (at least i think that's it in that shot!)
on the other hand we've all seen tons of photos of Keith with it, from when Ronnie lent it to him for the Talk Is Cheap tour.

another shot of Ronnie's reverse Firebird ... looks like the CNIB gig?
which would mean it's probably by either Richard Aaron or Neal Preston.

I am not sure it's '79, it more looks like '78. Notice that this Firebird is NOT the same as the Firebird he used from 1989 on. This Firebird is a Firebird VII (7) with three mini-humbuckers. The Firebird he used now is a Firebird V (5) with two mini-humbuckers.

Bloody Hell! I think the issue of what guitar Ronnie is holding is somewhat secondary in that photo, no? Jesus, did you have to post it. I've just ate my dinner!

which photo - this one?

- 2000 or so by Mario Testino

no, i don't think it's secondary at all - i actively want to know what guitar that is.
and if you can't manage to concentrate on it in the photo, try having a look at the fanclub dvd -
i think it's the same one that's leaning on the wall in the "making ABB" bits.
anyone recognize it?

thanks Mathijs! you're probably right about the date - i see Ronnie in a necktie and i think Barbarians :E
but he wore it on the 78 tour as well sometimes, didn't he.

and thanks for the Firebird details - i need to ponder those things some more. i find Firebirds confusing by definition.

That guitar is a Super 400:

eureka - i think! when people talked about this, did they mean the one he's using in Saitama on LSTNT and ONNYA?
it looks black, but when the light hits it it has a green sheen (so maybe it's properly called ebony? if i'm following Mathijs right).
i don't have any photos from that show - if someone else could post a shot of this guitar,
or a screen capture from the dvd - i would be truly grateful (and would make fresh popcorn). :E
the guitar is LP-shaped; it's got 3 single-coil-lookin pickups and an odd cross-sort-of design down below the tailpiece.
what *is* that??

Ronny has some nice Gibsons!
Especially the Firebird, awesome guitar!!
Plus the Black LP style guitar.
That's great stuff!!
I've always enjoyed Ronnie's choice of guitars.
Lovely.
End of story!

What nice guitars..
A stunning collection!
Such a rich guy, he can afford it, ofcourse.

But still, nice choices.
A great collection indeed.
Now, Keith has some AWESOME ones too!
Not to be overlooked.
Especially his Telecaster's ofcourse.
Don't mind this bullshit post. You have to look at things vertically, you know?

Well, it's 24 past midnight now, and I would love to say what he's got in Saitama, but I would first have to see a picture of it!

Could it be like this one, only with three single coil pickups:

It's a new Japanese made Zemaitis. The Zemaitis owners visited the Stones while on tour in the US, and the bought a shipload of the new Zemaitis guitars. Wood bought some Metal Tops, Richards bought the 5-string Macabre, Wood's son bought a Metal top. If this is the guitar you mean, Wood also apperently bought some more! The three single coil Zemaitis is also used by Rich Robinson by the way.
