Around 1982 the Stones EP's from the early 60's were reissued
in Japan in a 12" vinyl format. In the red area at the top of
obi strip there is a sealed, minature condom.

A few years ago friends dropped by with a Japanese exchange
student they were hosting. Somewhere during the conversation
I produced a couple of the albums and asked if she could translate
or tell me the meaning of the condoms. But she became quite embarrassed
and only said something like "This means Rolling Stones is very sexy"

So does anyone know the significance or meaning of these items?

That's a much more believable translation.

Anyone else here remember the Japanese (I think they were) releases of some of the Decca catalog, that included little condoms that presumably you were supposed to put on your turntable spindle to prevent, you know, various diseases? They were the funniest thing I think I have ever seen. I have a couple of them, 12" EPs I think, but they may have issued the entire catalog like that. Any stories about this, how it came about, or anything else interesting to note? They were just in the record bins at my local Tower Records one day and I couldn't resist. Plus they sound fantastic.

Amazing the topics that come up here for consideration. This brought a flashback to when we lived in Baltimore and two of our neighbors were a gay couple, Dennis and George. They were into buying and selling antiques, specializing in various niche items. One of these was antique condom covers and ads for the same. Condoms once came in cardboard and metal containers, similar in size to little aspirin tins, back in the day. They even published a book on the condom covers and ads, some of which are great looking pieces of art. George was also a songwriter whose main claim to fame was co-writing the Connie Francis hit, "Lipstick On Your Collar". George was amazed that, years after its popularity, he still managed to pull in $20000 or so annually in royalties from the song.

that must refer to the fact(?) that these were included with the special edition Japanese 12" EP form that originally were issued on 7" EP?

I have the very two pictured in that thread and both those were originally 7" EPs now on 12" (5 X 5 and Got Live If You Want It).
