Still A Fool

I just downloaded this - anybody know when it was recorded? My guess would be in the Let It Bleed period but Stu's piano sounds straight out of Chess.

>> 1968 13th - 23rd May: London, Olympic Sound Studios. Producer: Jimmy Miller.
Sound engineer: Glyn Johns.
- Still A Fool (McKinley Morganfield) - Nicky Hopkins on piano <<

Another question - who's playing slide?

I've got the 9:55 version, FYI. Is the Olympic version out there as well?

nzentgraf seems to be saying the Olympic Studios version is the *only* one out there.
different bootlegs have different edits of it ...

yeah: Hubert Sumlin's About Them Shoes - a good album. and Keith's Still a Fool is so freaking *swampy!* mighty mighty fine :E

Keith on hearing Still A Fool for the first time -

I heard Muddy through Mick Jagger. We were childhood friends, hadn't seen each other for a few years, and I met him on a train around 1961. He had a Chuck Berry record and The Best of Muddy Waters. I was going to mug the guy for the Chuck Berry because I wasn't familiar with Muddy. We started talking, went 'round to his house, and he played me Muddy and I said, "Wow. Again." And about 10 hours later, I was still going, "Okay, again." When I got to Muddy and heard Still a Fool and Hoochie Coochie Man - that is the most powerful music I've ever heard. The most expressive.

A true Muddy classic with one of his strangest, stripped down studio line ups.

Chess Studio July 11 1951

Muddy Waters - vocal& guitar
Little Walter - guitar
Leonard Chess - bass drum

Mick also covers with Red Devils 1992...
And Stones performed at Paradiso 1995.

AKA Two Trains Runnin' - excellently performed by the Butterfield Blooze Band on their epic '66 album, East West

Are we sure that it is Brian on Slide? I mean, I hope it is, becasue thatt would mean that there is a superb piece of Brian's slide playing LATE IN THE GAME available out there. I think SAF/2Trains Running is just incredible. Now that is the Stones at their low-down evilest best! That is the real Dirty Work! If I have ever heard Ampegs doing what they do, this is it. Sounds like Flyin V, or Dan Armstrong or some heavy piece of artillery in Keith's hands too.
I believe that the vocal/ harp mike might even be coming through a mere guitar amp too.

It's Brian for sure. It as recorded in the last month Brian was still a real part of the band. All tracks that feature Brian on BB were recorded in this month.

About the amps: in 1968 the Stones had three brands of amps available: Vox, Triumph and Fender. They didn't start using Ampeg's in the studio until 1970. Also, the Flying V's and Ampegs didn't arrive until 1968. Judging on the sound, Keith plays his LP Custom through a Vox AC-30. Brian's guitar sounds like the semi-acoustic Australian Maton to me.

definitely. I'd go even further and say its one of the best songs they never released, cover or otherwise

Yeah, this is a great, dirty sounding one. You can't listen to this one and not be sliding your hips around.

Doesn't the piano sound more like Stu's style. I would have thought it was him if I hadn't read it above.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Where can I find this?

Re: Still A Fool

Me confused - Ampegs and Fkying V did nt arrive until 68? And it was recorde the last of Brian's month? So that leaves plenty of time for Keith to pick them up and play them. no?
And triumph, traynor, Fender bassman are pretty close to those mega ampegs anyway. Close enough for rock'n roll anyway LOL...
Point is that this sounds like it was generated in one of those dark dingy rehearsal basements with dusty smoke smelling carpets draped on the walls; cigarette burns in the rugs. It's probably too cold in there too, somehting is creaking somewhere. One of tose rooms that everyone who has ever played in a band knows all too well. I can not get over the sound of the vox mike. I love when Jagger huffs and puffs through his harmonica mike.

I'd second that thought. It's just SO bad-ass and SO howling that it's unbeliveable. Some months ago I woke up in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep. I put that song on and had me a smoke. THAT was a great feeling.

I have to bump this, but there is no official ‘Track Talk Still A Fool’
(Or I can't find it)

I heard this today on a new CD I acquired and I was literally blown away.
Blown.Away.
I see the questioning of Brian, Dave Mason, about guitars , but then, someone questioned the harmonica.
I thought Mick’s vocals had surely done me in/good, and then it turns to harmonica 1/2 way thru.

Blatantly obvious Brian plays slide guitar and Mick the harmonica.

To me with the harmonica, yes, and Brian the slide guitar, yes my first thought.

I have no handy dandy album notes/ CD Insert to read. I searched the internet, then came here.
Thank you for 100% response.

Furthermore, I am sure this is Ian Stewart’s best piano playing track.
It showcases his ability, and later I am going to read up more did he learn in ballrooms? That fancy touch that never misses. Don’t see it out of his usually stern face. So focused. Dazzling. What a track.

In fact, the very first post in this thread from 2006 eye popping smiley
