EXPLICIT LYRICS
Posted by: Edith Grove ()
Date: June 10, 2006 21:42

I have often wondered how many times the Stones have been censored, restricted or protested during their career due to their music alone. Not thinking about their off-stage activities here. The earliest example I can think of was LSTNT on Ed Sullivan. I forget what year that was. But aside from the recent China and Superbowl shows, the last time I remember any big stink about their music was Jesse Jackson's problem with Some Girls. Let's hear some more examples on this and please, watch your #@&*"% language!

well, there was the Star Star controversy. the record label didnt allow the origional title. and wasnt the Steve Mc Queen Line blurred out on the origional LP? if it wasnt that line, it was some line in that song that was covered up. I think I read that Steve Mc Queen liked being mentioned in the song, but his "people" didnt like it. Or maybe it was Ali Mc Graw who didnt like it.

and then there was the line "I'll make bets that your gunna get John Wayne before he dies" that was changed in live versions to "Jimmy page is quite a rage, I could not see the reason why". was that because John wayne actually died?

more recently the allie mc graw/steve mc queen line has been changed to something like "billy bob thorntons got mad at me, for givin it to Angeleen (a)" at least thats what it sounds like to me.

every country had that white cover. The toilet wall cover was first used only when the album was issued on CD

january 1967. However, there were earlier examples, such as the bleeping out of the line "make some girl" from 'Satisfaction' when played on US TV in 1965 (I think its the 'Shindig' performance)

the performances of 'Rough Justice' and 'Start me up' from Detroit that was used on the NFL Opening Night broadcast early in this tour were also subject to the 'offending' lyrics being edited out.

The version of 40 Licks issued in China excluded four songs (the same four were banned from being performed this year). Like the Shangai performance, the Stones didnt replace them with other songs.

When Sticky Fingers was released in Spain in 1971 (which was still under fascist rule at the time), the cover was banned and was replaced with a picture of some sticky fingers protruding from a can. "Sister Morphine" was banned and was replaced by "Let It Rock".

"Claudine" was supposed to be on 'Emotional rescue' but withdrawn at a VERY late stage due to concerns about litigation due to the lyrical content.

When 'Exile' came out, the notorious Mary Whitehouse (who to those unfamiliar with her, was a tedious old busybody who was the self appointed chairperson of the National Viewers and Listeners Association, who took it upon herself to get outraged on the nations behalf at anything remotely associated with sex, violence or swearing on TV or any other aspect of UK culture) complained about bad language on the album. She admitted later that she had never actually heard or listened to any of the songs in question.

The lyrics of several Stones songs when reproduced as sheet music have for years bore no relation to the actual words sung, so you would get bizarre nonsense such as "starbucker starbucker" and (on Rocks Off) "find the lucky feed"

Very nice post there Beelyboy. It's hard to explain things like that...what is so special about RS compared to the many others, but that was a nice one.

I've seen that Spanish cover of Sticky Fingers in pictures, but never realised it was a result of censorship. May be a stupid question, but is that cover still produced?

Thanks for the tip Boston! I got to see the place (from the outside) in Aug. '03. Looks to still be residential, and I have to wonder if the current tenant has any idea what took place there 43 years ago. I also heard that Mr. Phelge was trying to get a historical marker installed there to commemorate the place. Haven't heard if he was successful.

the locals appear to be quite well aware of their previous neighbours.

I was there in August 2003, couldnt remember the exact address and a guy working on the house about 3 doors away took one look at me and the girl I was with, pointed me in the direction of the house in question and simply said "he used to live in THAT one!"

There were also some issues with "I'm Alright" [or "It's All Right"]. I think the Catholic Church didn't like that one or something. Was this banned from being aired on the radio?

The John Wayne/Jimmy Page and the Steve McQueen / Angelene lines had nothing to do with censorship. I think these were just changes in the live lyrics Mick chose to make. Maybe Mick felt the changes are in good taste because the Duke and Steve are no longer with us, or maybe he felt the younger crowd wouldn't relate as well as they would to Jimmy Page and Billy Bob / Angelena.

Re: EXPLICIT LYRICS

Another example of morphing lyrics could be Brown Sugar. On the original
Brown Sugar how come you taste so good, just like a young girl should
has become
Brown Sugar how come you dance so good just like a young man should.

Did they get some complaints from women? In a book KEEF said brown sugar was inspired by a drug (heroin?). I prefer the iriginal, and MICK throws in get down on your knees, in the older live version. So was this censored?

Baby, baby... I've been so sad since you've been gone
Way back to New York City, were you do belong.
Honey, I'll miss your two tongue kisses, legs wrapped around me tight.
If I ever make it back to fun city girl, gonna make you scream all night.

honey, honey, call me on the telephone. Heard you moved out to Hollywood with your can of tasty foam. All those beat up friends of mine have got to get you in their books. With lead guitars and movie stars getting underneath your hood.
Cause you're a star fu-ker.....
Yeah I heard about the polaroids. Now thats what I call obscene. Those tricks with fruit were kind of cute. I bet you keep your pussy clean. Honey, I miss your two tongue kisses, legs wrapped around me tight. If I ever make it back to New York now, gonna make you scream all night.
Cause you're a star fu-ker.....
Now Ali McGraw got mad with you for giving head to Steve McQueen. And you and me we made a pretty pair falling through the silver screen. Now Honey I'm opened to anything, I dont know were to draw the line. I'm making bets that you gonna get John Wayne before he dies.
Cause you're a star fu-ker.... yes you are, yes you are

yes, but there was a line it was either the "giving head to steve mc queen" or It might have been "I bet you keep your pussy clean" that was cencored on the origonal Goats Head Soup LP. Altough I cant remember the line, I do remember hearing the censored version on a frineds record. On that line, the sound is like looped or distorded or something so you cant understand what hes saying.

It was actually President Franco that objected to AW design. He thought it was immoral.

If you want smutty lyrics SCB naughty girl was 15. But on GYYYO her age slips down to 13.

I believe it was Lucille Ball who was most angered.

"Cock Sucker Blues" is never been released as single, as far as I know it was not permitted by Decca.

To add on Withsssouls comment on Phelge's "Nankering
With The Stones"; if you like me dont have to
o w n every single piece of paper or junk that has
a tongue logo or the word 'Stones' written on it,
and live in Sweden (probably the same on many
other countries) you could go to your local
library and borrow it on a remote loan basis. I did.
Agree 110% on Sssouls impressions.

Even before "Satisfaction" wasn't there something with "It's all over now" too? "playing her half-assed games.."?
And in one of the songbooks from IORR album they had the words from "Short & Curlies" as "It's too bad she's got you by the boards".

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

It was released as a part of a LP box set in the early 80s. It must have been some funny guy at the record-factory....I can't remember the whole story.
But once Decca found out about the bonus 7" of CS Blues, they stopped producing it....so it's very rare, but it IS official.

there were 3 female celebs who objected. Cant recall, but Bardot may have been the other one
