Stones "non" rock influences over the years

In trying to come up with a new topic of interest....I'm far from a music or Stones expert but it is interesting the popular musical influences they have channeled through the years.

Firstly it is pretty safe to say they a rock band even at the the beginning playing alot of blues...it see it something like this...your thoughts?

1963-1965 American blues and American rock (sets the foundation)
1966-1967 psychedelic
1968-1969 back to foundation rock/blues (but heavier sounding), country added
1970-1975 carrying on as before with some raggae creaping in toward the end
1976-1982 reggae, punk, disco, blues
1983 new wave, pop and many previous styles

1989-present - I really am lost here, maybe they stopped being influenced
by popular culture due to their status

I may be way off on this...thoughts?

Mark

I would at least add American Soul to the 1964-1966 years. At this time in their carreer the only influence seems to be their own earlier years: trying to sound like Stones should.

there's a good essay here: [www.timeisonourside.com]

... and while i'm here ... it's a bit of a digression (sorry!) but:

>> 1963-1965 American blues and American rock <<

you're using "rock" here as a synonym for "rock & roll", which is interesting:
in a lot of people's usage (including mine), there's an odd nonsymmetrical synonymity:
"rock & roll" can be a synonym for "rock", but "rock" doesn't work as a synonym for "rock & roll".
if anyone else knows what i'm talking about i'd be relieved to hear from you. :E

The only synonym for Rock or Rock 'n' Roll is SEX. Always has been always will be.
RNR all Nite, Rock Me Baby, Rock Me Slowly, Rock Til You Drop...

Rock is the term that covers all sorts of styles (punk, hardrock, Rock 'n roll, etc.). Rock 'n roll as a branch from the "rock-tree".

A gorilla is a monkey, but not all monkies are gorillas. Is that what you mean, Miss Soul?

something like that - thanks Mr Edward.
but i'd put the rock/rock & roll relationship the other way around:
i personally would never call 50s-style rock & roll "rock" (to my mind rock per se didn't exist until circa 1965),
but the term "rock & roll" often includes what i call rock. when we talk about the greatest rock & roll band in the world,
we aren't referring only to their prowess at 50s-style rock & roll.

(there was a discussion here a while ago about the Beatles being rock or pop,
and this difference in people's way of defining "rock" led to a lot of miscommunication.)

Disco as an influence is missing, IMO... there was alot of influence from Disco in the period, say, 1976 to 1982 or so.

On the same line and on addition wish they'd do more creative stuff too nowadays. For example MAWGJ from Bridges and LWTCDI from ABB are just superb. From 70'ies for example Slave, Hey Negrita, CYHMK... this kind of stuff + traditional Stones = Heaven (which was not the best possible experiment though...)

In the 1965-67 era of the Stones there were quite a few pop influences, like on Between the Buttons which was pretty much a purely pop record and there's pop influences on Aftermath and alot of their very early singles too.

I just think they've absorbed everything as they've developed over the years. Their collective tastes and influences include just about every genre of popular and traditional music you can think off.
I've always believed that the mark of the Stones' greatness is that they're able absorb all these styles and mould them into something that's unmistakably the Rolling Stones and yet still remains authentic and true to it's origins.

Does that make sense ?

Thank goodness hip-hop hasn't made many inroads with The Stones. Yeah, I heard ASMB.

I submit that the first time that a disco/funk influence was used on a stones record was from "100 Years ago" on GHS.

thankyou, your honor.

Too drunk to read it all correctly...but some eastern influence on "Continental Drift"? ...some Hoagy Carmichael (eg the Great American Tradition) dripping through some (most?) of Keef's stuff?

...and who's to say the Stones have to be experimental..as Keef himself said it: We're not here to break new grounds - we're here to be THE ROLLING STONES" (that'll do!)

Yeah. It does.

"Thank goodness hip-hop hasn't made many inroads with The Stones. Yeah, I heard ASMB."

We can be happy that they left it for others, but "a kind of a rap song" Memo From Turner was a good one though? And Keith's riff is ok in ASMB and wasn't it even borrowed to some hip hop artist's recordings later on? Don't remember who that was.
