FRANCE is about to release next JUNE 15 an interesting 75 minutes DVD : "THE STORY OF BRIAN JONES AND THE ROLLING STONES - NOT FADE AWAY" by Richard Driscoll. Tony Calder is the main character (with interviews of the Stones and few others). Musical footage taken from the famous T.A.M.I. TV show from october 1964.
The bonus section contains what really seems to be a totally unseen interview of Charlie Watts in his garden filmed by Peter Whitehead forty years ago. I've been trying to get details from several specialists but no one never heard about these images until now...
During the interview, the young Charlie Watts (wearing a brown pull-over and checked shirt) answered several questions like influence of pop music on american youth, talked about Barbra Streisand, "Little Red Rooster", "Paint It Black", evolution of the band's music, sex in Rolling Stones songs, his new fame, etc. We see his dog, a red ball in his mouth. Thanks to our great french fan-club (Sympathyforthedevils.com), Gered Mankowitz remembered very well he was there, in 1966, taking pictures with Mr Whitehead was filming when Charlie is in a street in front of a wall with his wife Shirley ridding an horse, even galloping down the street later on !
We know Charlie doesn't like the interview too much and this one is quite long (near 18 minutes !).
Maybe someone here has seen this before (but maybe not !) as I did not get more details from the movie director. I reaalt think it could simply be rushes never used.
Thanks for your help ! I'll be back when I have more news anyway.
Here is the answer I received from archivist Felix Aeppli (The Rolling Stones 1962-2002) :
"Your disc has already arrived, thanks a lot.
I immediately started out to watch the Charlie Watts interview. I thought it was quite amusing (and interesting). The date, I'm certain is "late May or early June 1966". Charlie is referring to Bob Dylan's electric tour (mid-May 66). Also watch the flowers (can't be summer) plus Charlie's is holding the glasses he wore when the Stones left for the US on June 22, 1966.
I first thought the interview was done for American television but the interviewer doesn't have an American accent. It might indeed be Peter Whitehead. And the woman on he horse IS Charlie's wife, Shirley. I can't remember having seen the clothes she wears though.
I haven't watched the main movie about Brian Jones yet.
