Did you listen to Stern recently. He had one of his male staff get a Brazilian bikini was in the studio. The guy was screaming in pain, it was hilarious.

so 1993 was the time it got sold in one piece, still working as audio & video mobile.

"The last recordings made by it , somewhat ironically, were with Chris Jagger and his band at the unit's base in Pinewood Studios for an album called "Atcha" that came out on Sequel Records. The picture shows it packed up before leaving Pinewood on its road to be sold which it finally was through auction at Bonhams and is now believed to be in Upstate New York."

I wonder if it can be traced any further?

>>AFAIK the truck is in storage in Canada. There's a collector there who has a warehouse with tons of vintage synths and the RSM unit.<<

>>"When the Stones decommissioned this rig, they sold it to some investors in NYC, who called it RSM Remote and based it in Weehauken, NJ. Still had the Stones lips logo on the back. In the late 90's I was involved (as a tech) with doing some of the mods to the 3M's as well as repairs to other pieces on the truck. This thing was fabulous, and that Helios rocked. I remember seeing a copy of a master list that was kept showing all of the sessions done on that truck since it was built.

"I last worked on it in 2000, and for what I have heard as well, it did wind up being sold to a collector in Canada. If I had known at the time it was for sale, I would have bought it myself. Heard the sale price was only $35,000.

The Story of the mobile begins in 1968
in 2000 it's still there, In Canada.

Ten Years After mention the Stones Mobile Recording unit on the sleeve of their Live album recorded in Frankfurt.

Great album and for what I can judge a great recording

Open-g, is that THE Mobile-bus ?

Didnt Ronnie Lane record something on the Mobile? Or am I just confusing that with his travelling circus show in circa 74-76? Seems like he may have even purchased the Mobile but again maybe that came to me in a dream?;-)

Also, perhaps this is a stupid question but which EOMS tracks were recorded on the Mobile? Thought it was all recorded at Nellcote for some reason. I know it was partly remixed in LA in 72 but didnt realize some of the songs were done on the Mobile.

Thanks in advance for ANY info!!!

yeah, thats what it says

>>Thought it was all recorded at Nellcote for some reason.<<

well it was all recorded at Nellcote, but Nellcote isn't a studio so they drove their mobile in the garden.
see Rockman's pic above.

I thought it burned down when Deep Purple recorded Machine Head.

I heard that Ronnie Lane was in possession of it and looters stripped it down and stole everything. Maybe in Mac's book? Can't remember where I read that.

Well it nearly burned down - nearly.

During the making of the sixth Deep Purple album (Machine Head) the Mobile nearly caught fire as it stood next to the casino that was set ablaze during a Frank Zappa concert. The Mobile was quickly moved and the incident became the inspiration behind Deep Purple's most famous song, “Smoke on the Water”. The song makes mention of the Mobile, referring to the "Rolling truck Stones thing".

right: "recorded at Nellcote" means "using the mobile".
but the whole album wasn't in fact recorded there. Mathijs has told us the details,
but being a romantic, i put them on a shelf somewhere to ponder at some later date

Yes, you're right, of course.
In a perfect and romantic world evrything would have been recorded in the damp basement of Nellcote - but it wasn't.

from Timeisonourside.com

Exile is really a mixture of bits and pieces left over from the previous album recorded at Olympic Studios and which, after we got out of the contract with Allen Klein, we didn't want to give him: tracks like Shine a Light, and Sweet Virginia. Those were mixed up with a few slightly more grungy things done in the South of France. It's seen as one album all recorded there and it really wasn't. We just chucked everything in.
- Mick Jagger, 2003

Recorded:
June 16-July 27, 1970: Olympic Sound Studios, London, England
October 21-Mid-November 1970: Rolling Stones Mobile Unit, Mick Jagger's home Stargroves, Newbury, England
June 7-October 1971: Rolling Stones Mobile Unit, Keith Richards' home Nellcôte, Villefranche-sur-mer, France
December 1971: Sunset Sound Studios, Los Angeles, USA

smile: sounds like a name they could use for one of their secret club gigs :E
they were billed as the Little Blue Crunchy Things at one of those, so
the Slightly More Grungy Things would be beautifully apt.

It was for sale about 10 years ago...located in Australia...was in all the newspapers...MOJO magazine might have had a story on it....if I recall, much of the outdated recording equiptment was included with the sale...and although it wasn't terribly expensive, it would be a waste of money for anyone except maybe the Cleveland R & R Hall of Fame Museum or similar institution.....peter
