so 1993 was the time it got sold in one piece, still working as audio & video mobile.

"The last recordings made by it , somewhat ironically, were with Chris Jagger and his band at the unit's base in Pinewood Studios for an album called "Atcha" that came out on Sequel Records. The picture shows it packed up before leaving Pinewood on its road to be sold which it finally was through auction at Bonhams and is now believed to be in Upstate New York."

Open-g, is that THE Mobile-bus ?

Didnt Ronnie Lane record something on the Mobile? Or am I just confusing that with his travelling circus show in circa 74-76? Seems like he may have even purchased the Mobile but again maybe that came to me in a dream?;-)

Also, perhaps this is a stupid question but which EOMS tracks were recorded on the Mobile? Thought it was all recorded at Nellcote for some reason. I know it was partly remixed in LA in 72 but didnt realize some of the songs were done on the Mobile.

well it was all recorded at Nellcote, but Nellcote isn't a studio so they drove their mobile in the garden.

I thought it burned down when Deep Purple recorded Machine Head.

I heard that Ronnie Lane was in possession of it and looters stripped it down and stole everything. Maybe in Mac's book? Can't remember where I read that.

Well it nearly burned down - nearly.

During the making of the sixth Deep Purple album (Machine Head) the Mobile nearly caught fire as it stood next to the casino that was set ablaze during a Frank Zappa concert. The Mobile was quickly moved and the incident became the inspiration behind Deep Purple's most famous song, “Smoke on the Water”. The song makes mention of the Mobile, referring to the "Rolling truck Stones thing".

right: "recorded at Nellcote" means "using the mobile".
but the whole album wasn't in fact recorded there. Mathijs has told us the details,
but being a romantic, i put them on a shelf somewhere to ponder at some later date

Yes, you're right, of course.
In a perfect and romantic world evrything would have been recorded in the damp basement of Nellcote - but it wasn't.

Exile is really a mixture of bits and pieces left over from the previous album recorded at Olympic Studios and which, after we got out of the contract with Allen Klein, we didn't want to give him: tracks like Shine a Light, and Sweet Virginia. Those were mixed up with a few slightly more grungy things done in the South of France. It's seen as one album all recorded there and it really wasn't. We just chucked everything in.

It was for sale about 10 years ago...located in Australia...was in all the newspapers...MOJO magazine might have had a story on it....if I recall, much of the outdated recording equiptment was included with the sale...and although it wasn't terribly expensive, it would be a waste of money for anyone except maybe the Cleveland R & R Hall of Fame Museum or similar institution.....peter
