J Geils Band

anyone else think their first couple of LPs from the early 70s sound real stonesy i.e. real good?

at times on "hotline" and "bloodshot" (i have this on red vinyl and its playing right now) its not too difficult to imagine its mick singing..

i have to say i love this stuff.. any other 70s bands other than faces that have a stonesy sound?

i think J Geils opened up for the Stones either in 81 or 82 when they exploded commercially with two of their worse songs: freeze frame and centerfold..that must have been a real thrill for Peter Wolf and the rest of the band...

Saw Geils a couple of times (pre Centerfold etc) and still believe they were one of the 2 or 3 best live bands I've ever seen. "Full House" is a great live album also.

One of the very few to come close to the Stones. I'd pick the NY Dolls also, but I'm sure some would disagree.

I was lucky enough to see them live 13 times here in Detroit.
They were awesome, just plain awesome!

I have said it before, and I'll say it again...Peter Wolf is the best front man in all of rock.

Listen to Blow Your Face Out! (lie album, 1976). That's the answer to your question.

Yes,they were a great band indeed! Very stonesy as you say!
A newly released overview (The Best Of J Geils Band)is just released by EMI.
If you don't have any music by them, you might want to check this out!
Just listening to Sanctuary (again), great song.
I'm rediscovering them again, the last few months.

Saw them open for the Stones in Los Angeles '81. They were a damn good band.
They blew away Prince who was booed off the stage, and also blew away George Thoroughgood.
But the Stones blew them all away.

Sanctuary still ranks as one of my favorite songs, and of course Whammer Jammer.

growing in Boston, i saw them many, many times. Their first 4 albums were great.

Peter Wolf did Wilson Pickett better than any other white man alive

I can;t do my homework....anymore.

Saw them twice...absolutely loved them both times. Loved the human pyramid they do at the end of the night with Peter Wolf on top holding his right hand which is painted black out to the crowd.

Those guys were so good...

It brings up the old feelings of what an encore used to be. Back in the day, The J. Geils Band would keep coming out to play as long as the crowd wanted to hear more. I saw them do about 12 extra songs during five (!) encores, with the last one coming after the lights had been turned on.
No one left early and people screamed and stomped and clapped continuously.

It's really sad that today's encores consist of a pre determined classic, conveniently left out of the set. It has become such a given, that some people leave early or just stand there expecting it to happen.

I always left a Geils' show feeling exhausted and rewarded.

Yep, Kent. How low did they sink in later years...

Low enough to warm up for the Stones in Gothenburg 1982. And that's mighty low. :-D

Very good live band. They opened for the Stones along with Journey in Chicago in 1978.

Great band. Excellent live show. Wolf, J., Magic, Seth, etc. - all superb players.

Mick and Keith are pals with Peter Wolf. They have been on his solo albums.

Mick- Lights Out '84

Keith- Sleepless '02

J Geils and Thorogood were the key opening acts in '81-82.

Mick's on Sleepless, too. The superb "Nothing But The Wheel".

I was in high school in the early 80's and I have to admit, I like Rage In A Cage, Centerfold (I still appreciate the milk snare drum in the video) and Freeze Frame.

On a related note, Destroyer is one of my all time favorite Kinks songs.

Two examples of classic rock acts being influenced by the New Wave and coming up with something pretty cool, not embarrassing.

I bet that was a great show...I was always jealous when I could tell rock bands were having more fun than I was...like, come on guys, pass some of that shit back here. Let us catch up with you.

and remember that "song," No Anchovies Please?...I loved that song (really it was more of a rap). What album was that from? It came out in late 1979 or early 1980.
