Ask yourself, if you were on a desert island and could only have one band's dicsography. . .come on?, there's no way you could listen to Robert Plant over & over. . .Mick & the boys, yes. Plain & simple, sure LZ had some great stuff but not hanging stuff, ya know? The Stones, that's hanging, say no more. . . .

I heard some LZ 'classic' the other day and had to turn that station, they are sometimes like a misquito in your ear. . . Stones hands down. . (btw, over pretty much any band including the Beatles, which I love. . .but desert island? - that's the benchmark. . . .ask yourself, desert island, one band??)

Led Zep, Free and The Stones WERE music in the late 60s early 70s. A FANTASTIC band.

Anyone who likes rock and don't agree that the Led Zep II, III, Four Symbols and Physical Graffiti albums ARE amongst the greatest rock records of all time just isn't listening!!! As good a four records as The Stones "big four" in my humble opinion.

And live? Awesome! Just the 4 of them putting out such a ferocious AND delicate sound (as the song dictates).

All right kids, I've seen them both. One of the top two concerts I've ever seen in my life, and I've seen hundreds was Zep in 1977. The other was The Who in 1975. The Stones are in my top five. The Stones obviously were more diversified and I love them, but Zep's sound, without question, was the hammer of the gods.

Led Zeppelin in both categories. In record sales, its not even remotely close and never has been.

Good band though they were, theres no accounting for taste.

personally I love 'em both but my desert-island pick would be the Stones because there are much more discs around...;-)

but to compare Mick Taylor with Jimmy Page is a bad joke, isn't it? Mick Taylor was/is(?) a good guitar player but Jimmy was/is(?) a genius.

I would hope everyone on this board would say they can't be compared to the Stones, just as everyone on a Zeppelin board would say the Stones don't compare to Zeppelin.
It is truly amazing that despite how popular the Stones are, they haven't sold that many albums, relatively, at least in the States. Zeppelin have sold alot more albums, with Zeppelin 4 selling 23 million at last count. Aerosmith and AC/DC have both sold a bit more than the Stones despite having far fewer albums.

I think The Stones are better than them all - The Beatles, Dylan, Led Zeppelin... The Stones' music is unpretentious and noisy. The noise makes it difficult to "understand". And since it's not pretentious, like "difficult" music usually is, many don't understand how good it is.

They are a bloated overrated band, and Plant is one of the luckiest, most useless asses that has ever fronted a band. I-M-F-H-O.

And I actually don't know whether they sold as many records OUTSIDE the US as they have in the US. Not every place on the planet lives for endless guitar soloing. I'm sure they sold more than the Stones everywhere, though. Why? Subtlety has never been a strong seller.

No I dont think you can compare. TOTALLY different approach to blues. I think that each is the BEST at how they interpet the blues style of music. Both JP/RP and MJ/KR are masters at producing. IF there is one thing that you have to give Jimmy is that he actually plays on several early Stones records when he was a Studio muscian. He has lead a big hand to the Who, The Kinks, The Stones etc... Does not make him better but he goes way beyond Zeppelin.
