The Double Door 1997

What does everyone think of this gig? While a bit sloppy, I think it's a very cool snapshot of the kings of the hill in an intimate setting dusting off a few gems and playing some warhorses with great enthusiasm and energy. Some songs that particularly stand out to me are the versions of 'Little Queenie', 'Shame Shame Shame', 'Let It Bleed', 'The Last Time', and 'Brown Sugar'. I feel that in 1997, Keith was at his modern peak. One thing that amazed me about this show though was how good Ronnie was! The man is ON during this show. I was watching the DVD last night and he may even be louder in the mix than Keith. All the Ronnie naysayers, I say get your hands on this DVD (not sure how the audio on the DVD and CD compare, I only have the DVD).

the Stones were billed that night as The Little Blue Crunchy Things. :E
the mix is pretty lopsided and it sure is one of those nights, but ... ~*YEAH!*~
Little Queenie and Shame Shame Shame especially are mighty mighty fine.
LoFL - last time i had it on this dialog took place:
A: wow, they screwed Start Me Up really royally.
B: of course they screwed it royally - they're the Rolling Stones, how else are they gonna screw it?! :E

"What do you want - what?!"
- Keith

its a great show. IMO the best of the pre-tour warm ups that have circulated

and to get it as a pro shot DVD makes it even better

May I ask which source you people prefers?
The soundboard version or the audience?
There are different views about this....

I always thought that Ron did a great job in that show, especailly since it is 1997 that he was supposedly at his peak of uselessness. LOL it amazes me how KR misses that signature little riff before the 'Here it comes" line in 19th nervous breakdown completely the first time, and never realy gets it right. Of course nothing compares to how badly they do Anybody Seen My Baby. Despite the raggedness though, it is a wonderful show. One of my favorites, and a world above the Palaise Royal as far as I am concerned.

Now if we could only get the Phoenix from the start of this tour.

it kills me everytime i go to that place these days to see shows because i wasn't living in chicago when it happened but live here now - the stage is SO SMALL - so much smaller than any theater show i've seen (stockholm cirkus was the smallest). its just a bar in the trendy edgy part of town. i would've taken out as big of a cash advance on the credit card as necessary for that one (had to do that in london for shepherd's bush in '99).

Yeah Ronnie was on fire. I think that night burnt him out for the rest of the tour!!!!!!!!!!!

If I remember well, Audience recording is better, I think SBD is mono.

The audio was extracted from the video. It's not a real soundboard. The audience recording came out long before, and it is not very good at all. I think anyone who says they prefer the audience recording must be listening to one of the releases of the audio track from the video thinking it is audience. The audience boot is called "Behind the Double Door" and the soundboard is called "Live at the Double Door" [VGP300 or MORPH 01].

It sounds like Keith's guitar, or maybe all the sound gets turned up right near the end of 19th Nervous Breakdown, and everything after that point is much better than everything before.

This is a must listen recording: Highlights are one of only two decent recording quality versions of Crazy Momma coming out of the tour [maybe the best]; a great version of The Last Time, which is the only one of the tour that tries to be true to the studio version with the pause near the end and resumption of guitars; a super rendition of Let it Bleed, the only performance of Shame Shame Shame, which is great.

It is the best of the warm up gigs that I've heard/seen. Now if I could just get Phoenix 2005. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I think it's awful, to be honest. LQ is a mess. Shame Shame Shame is a nice little rarity, but even it is beyond sloppy. It's amazing how much better they got it together before opening night just a few days later....

btw, the video source is far inferior sound-wise to the great audience source....

Wow, I didn't think they sold bootlegs on amazon.com. I know you can get them on e-bay because those pages are created by individuals, but I didn't think individuals could create pages on amazon. Anybody know anything about this?

It's sloppy but still quite enjoyable IMO. At this point, I'd rather hear a sloppy show with a good setlist than a tight show with the same old warhorses.

I didn't know you could buy a DVD from a smokin' hot blonde. I once inadvertently bought VD from one, but that's another story.
