Get up, Stand up, ya all. . . .

I didnt' catch the stones this tour. . .but read that they covered the classic Wailers 'Get Up, Stand Up' and am just now listening to Bob Marley's live version of it. . .how did Mick & co. cover that? Was it funky ragae, or how did they twist it. .? Did Mick strut for this song, stand still or what? Who saw this in concert, wondering how the stones did this.

Don't we all think that Keith should fuse in more ragae fused songs in the future, they're pretty good at that riff stuff, and put the stones flavor over something - for the next studio release boys. . .

We don't neeeeed. . .no more trouble, we don't neeeeed. . .

I witnessed this in Hartford. It was performed very well.Jagger definitely was not standing still. One of the highlights of that show.I recommend trying to track down the dvd/cd.

They have playet it four times so far. Phoenix Theatre, Hartford, MSG 1, Philly 1. I heard it in Philly and it worked really well.

i liked both it and Mr. Pitiful better than Night Time in the "tribute" slot....

love RC - but the Stones' version of this classic is just "rote" at best. I've heard others do it much better - Fogerty's live version blows the Stones' away, I'm afraid to say....

Personally I'd rather listen to a mediocre Night Time than a bang-up Get Up, Stand Up.

To me its just a crappy song - makes me wanna get up, stand up, and head to the can.

i'm not a huge reggae fan - but i've really enjoyed the GUSU versions I've heard them do this tour. It makes sense they would do a cover if they wanted to do a reggae song, but if they are shootin' for a blooze tune - there's so many from their own records they could/should be doing - Limo, PW, Hip Shake, etc, etc....to me it's just wasting a valuable slot. undoubtedly it's there as a vehicle for Lisa when they skip GS....but, personally, I could give a rip whether Lisa gets a lead vocal - it always gets a big yawn from me.

mr pitiful was the standout.. ray charles' was very good and get up was just awful.... good idea gone bad..something horribly jarring about it..

Have to get in the whinin'-line alas here... sad smiley
None of the GU,SU-versions circulating has been anything.
Charlie and backbeat is not compatible; with only 1½
exception - You Dont Have To Mean It & to some extent:
Feel On Baby... Mick aint a top class reggae vocalist
either (two exceptions - Don't Look Back & FOB ).

Erikjjf; has GU,SU from Philly been recorded and posted?

....If anyone has it - please post it at Trade:
I want to get rid of some prejudgements. smiling smiley

It is more demanding vs. the crowd. It is easier to please the crowd with Night Time. They freak out every tiem Lisa is hitting the front stage. With Get Up Mick hs to do all the hard work and I am sure he is wasting energy to get the crowd moving on this song. I have seen i several times. Much harder than Night Time. So for the Stones it is an easy choice I think. But who knows. I think they will try out both during the first week of the tour in Europe. Like Saint Of Me was fantastic in Europe and only great in the States. So they have to test all songs over again for Europe. Good reason for seing them early on in the tour.

All I can say is at msg 1, the crowd (after a reaggeish "19th neervous breakdown") was flying. I never saw or smelled more weed at MSG. My first stones show there was 06/23/75 and have been to the venue constantly(used to smoke in the stairwells during Ranger games). I think GUSU was done great. After the song was over Mick started the crowd back upfor at least another minute or two.....great. Out of ten shows this tour so far , that was the "stonyest" show segment.

Reggae is popular in Europe and playing Get up Stand up in Stadiums, in Summer, will get for sure a great response from audiences.

I believe it will be in the set list for sure.

Ray Charles is not popular outside USA, maybe only in the UK.

In Europe no one will recognize the cover songs.

That´s my opinion!

Reggae popular in Europe, Marquess says, well; I agree...
From what I have picked up its way more On & even In here than in the States
.....If it sounds like Hartford - ... Nae..
.....If it sounds like Philly - It will boil.

Like Björnulf says: It's demanding...
It's not enuff just shoutin "He-yo-yo-yooo" & await a singalong...
Charlies rhythmic sense is challenged, really... Turned upside down...
Sorry to say this, but on Hartford he sounds like he's 64
(I've heard other audience recordings where I hear the same).
Keith has t push the others; so that the backbeat and the reggae drive & groove
doesnt get stuck or just crack up. Darryl has a tremendously important role here... Woody too. I think Keith mainly forces the other to do this number;
against the others silent protests.
Still I'm glad he keeps on pushin'. One day it wil sound terrific!

Finally I dont comprehend that kaya thing;
Rolling Stones is a ROCK band. Watchin them while ya high...
Nah, sorry, dont get it at all... !!

My opinion : I think thats really over-generalizing peoples tatste in music.

Over-generalization is a risque you take in approaching this issue,
of course. But I think there is some core of truth that
(a) Ray Charles is not too famous in Europe.
Joe COkcer made "Unchain My Heart" amazingly popular once, but otherwise...
His hit songs in early 60s are since long gone forgotte. It's a shame!
(b) Reggae is a little more popular in Europe than in the US.
How many US reggaeband (white) do you count?

I'll say that I haven't heard more than one non-Rasta guy who was better at singing reggae than Jagger.I'm not saying that they should play a reggae song at every show or that I'm a big reggae fan but,it is nice once in a while - something different. It definitely did work in Hartford,at least among the people in my section.I didn't look around for everyone's response.I didn't hear any mistakes at all either.I wouldn't mind catching Don't Look Back or an original next time.

"I'll say that I haven't heard more than one non-Rasta guy who was better at singing reggae than Jagger." (TitN)
- There are dozens. I will give ya one: Keith Richards.
But maybe he doesnt fit in the non-rasta guy criteria...
Go listen to Careless Ethopians with Keith & Toots if ya dont get it on the spot.

Jagger is maybe the greatest rock singer alive imho.
But he sure aint the greatest reggae singer, neither non-rasta nor whitey~.

Let's have some names of these whiteys.I don't listen to very much reggae but,I like the way Jagger sings it (other than Cherry,Oh Baby).I actually know some hard-core reggae fans that were blown away by the Walk And Don't Look Back duet.Maybe I'm wrong but, maybe I'm not. You've gotta bring some names if you're going to convince me.

As a big Marley fan, I thought Get Up Stand Up was pretty good. However, I preferred their cover of Mr Pitiful (it should be done more often). "Night Time" however has consistently been one of THE highlights of this tour for me. An inspired choice

Didnt they rehearse a Sly & The Family Stone song for this tour? I think it was either "Theres a Riot Goin On" or "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again". Whatever it was, it sounded really interesting. Pity it didnt happen

Saw Bernard Fowler do a smoking rendition of "Thank you falettinme..etc" with Ivan Neville's band at BB King's club a couple of hours after the second MSG gig in January. Would have been great to hear the Stones perform it

Ive never been to Europe. Would like really like to go some day. but , the point is, I cant really comment on it since ive never been there. It suprises me that hes not that popular there. you think he would be.

Thats a good point. I live in the us, I know some regee fans, but then when I think about it, I know a lot of people who think its annoying. I happen to like it. Not many white reggee bands in the US- your right. Sublime was a good one but they did other stuff too. they were punk at times
