What Songs Did Charlie & Bill Play On On Dirty Work?
Posted by: ohnonotyouagain ()

I know they weren't on every track - does anybody know which songs they played on? And who played the bass and the drums on the ones they weren't on?

I wonder if that's the only one Charlie didn't play on? I guess we'll have to wait for some more Dirty Work scholars to show up.

I think Ronnie was so excited to get writing credits he would have done everything.

Looking at that page, it looks like Bill played on only 3 out of 10 tracks: Dirty Work, Harlem Shuffle and One Hit. Charlie played on 8 out of 10, all of them except Too Rude and Sleep Tonight (Ronnie played drums on both).

I found out one interesting piece of trivia: other than Keith Richards, what musician plays on the most songs on Dirty Work? Surprisingly, it's not Ron Wood, who plays on 8 out of 10 (he's not on Winning Ugly or Back To Zero). No, the answer is Chuck Leavell, who plays on every song but Had It With You.

That explains a lot.

If you can't figure out by now just by LISTENING which songs
Bill is on, you need to start relistening to the entire Stones catalogue.
The 3 (3?!) songs he's playing on Dirty Work have much more
of a groove than the tunes he;s not on. Just compare Fight (with Ron on bass)
to the title track. If I was Bill, I would have said "3 songs out of 10?
I'm outta here." But you gotta give him credit for hanging in there.
BTW, I like the Dirty Work album, so send your cards and letters elsewhere.

Had it with you has no Bass guitar at all. Hold Back has Ivan Neville on Bass. The rumors that I heard were that no matter what the credits said, Charlie hardly played at all. They said he broke his leg but this was the period of Charlie's addictions. I mean One Hit, Winning Ugly, Back to Zero could conceivably be someone else. Anton Fig or Steve Jordan.

Not sure where your rumours came from.....

"One Hit" - for sure was Charlie, he stumbles into the song in his usual off beat way, his drums breaks are very much his signature.
"Winning Ugly" - Charlie again, but the drums are looped, thats very obvious particularly at the refrain before the fade out.
"Back to Zero" - I'd say that was definately Charlie's hi-hat shuffle and again very looped.

The song "Dirty Work" IS a different drumming style - could be Anton Fig. But again, very over-dubbed.

Only other songs he didn't play on are "Too Rude" and "Sleep tonight" - both Ron Wood.

Chelsea Drugstore! Simon Kirke was also at the sessions (DW). He set in for Charlie while he recuperated from an injury. Kirke also played drums at the show for Stu. Charlie was late due to traffic. I don't think any of Kirke's song have ever made it out, even on boots.

What injury?
Where did you get this information that he was at the DW sessions from?
Simon Kirke definately doesn't play on the album.

Simon Kirke did not play on the record. Only set in for Charlie, when Charlie cut his arm/hand. Numerous sources mention Charlie injury. I am strickly going on memory here... recall reading it in some magazine back in the '80s, an interveiw with Simon Kirke. His association with the Stones was the reason he sat with them at the 100s club when Charlie was late. Don't think anything with Kirke was recorded. He only rehearsed/jammed with them. Maybe someone else here also remembers this.

Thing about a rumor is kind of that it is justa rumor. That's all. I just rememebr hearing that around NY even before the album came out. It wasn't until much later on (whenever that Bradley interview came out) that Charlie evn talked about being strung out during those years.

During DW sessions in paris the band was complete amost every night they worked. Rumours that mick wasn't here a lot during the sessions are not true. Generaly he was the first to leave the studio around 6 in the morning or a little bit later, Chuck levell with sound ingeneers went out to a little supermarket to buy foods. They take a breakfast in the studio before leaving. If there were some changes in the songs about bass or drum, it was in new york during the re-recording. Information: every morning bill left the studio with a copy of the tapes of the night recording. Tapes are TDK-SA, the same we used for trading at this time. Perhaps you could make a trade with him.

So tell us more inside stories about those sessions! Why were you there aprilfool?

yeah c'mon April Fool, this is big! don't drop that "I was there" on us, and leave us hanging! were you an employee of the studio?

I wasn't inside the studio, just outside. We saw them arriving and leaving the studio with their friends or family or they were alone when the night must be a hard working night. Easy to talk with them but the difficulty was the language. Mick talk french. I saw Anita one night. The most strange was Charlie but we didn't know at this time he was addicted. I remembered now there is a guy with him. Certainly a dealer.

Its always seemed to me very unlike Charlie to have a heroin habit, I know it comes with the territory but from what we know of him it still seems unlike him. also its always seemed strange to me that Charlie hit Mick, that he would go to that length, just because of something Jagger said when he was drunk.
So Jagger is a good French speaker?

Don't how much Charlie was affected by heroin in those days. He had pulled that huge jazz orchestra together then and was rehersing with them.
I read somewhere he was going through marriage difficulties around that time, I think Shirley had been addicted to drink (not sure if alcoholic) - she would come to the studio and drag him away, this is when Ron Wood jumped on the drums (also a pic of Mick on the drums in BW's book Rolling with the Stones, during that period). When Charlie came back, he thought Rons drumming was better than his own, so it stayed on the final track.
He also gave that memorable interview for British Tv during the vid for "One Hit", during which he was asked if he'd done a lot of hanging around during his 25 years with the Stones, "Yeah, that's right - work five years, hang around 20". I still have the vid of the Tv programme - Charlie seems fine - maybe it was a good day for him.

I love those rare shots of Jagger on drums. There was one in one of those expensive genesis books from the Exile sessions, then the one turd mentions, and I saw one from the very recent ABB sessions where Jagger seems to have played a lot of everything.
BTW - I think Jagger is a pretty tight Bassplayer.

There was a Charlie interview where he spoke about being on the junk...said something like he just had to try it, wanted to see what it was like. Also mentioned that Keith knew he was doing junk but didn't say anything to him till
he collapsed in the recording studio. Keith told him it was about time he quit and cleaned up. Charlie found it quite amusing that Keith was giving him advice about drugs....if I find the interview I'll nail it up here for all to read.
