Why don't they play festivals?

There are so many great festivals in Europe this summer. These attract many young people who could become their new fans. I know the ticket prices would go up, but they don't need to bring in their biggest stages everytime? Ok, it was just a thought.

I remeber Jagger saying that he hates festivals because everybody is just tired at the end of the day and just want to here their hits and egt it over with.

Although it is a great way for them to atracted a lot of new YOUNG fans i don't see this ever happening. Only stuff like the Toronto SARS concerts.

Without being overly cynical, I think there may be economic considerations.

What kind of festival? Festival's are not big enough for the Stones.. first of all because they are expensive; you can't afford to have the Stones play your festival. And if you do, the ticket prices will go up real high. Expect about 120 dollars. Second of all, they're in the middle of a tour. Third, they don't need new fans, they have enough old and young fans.

Because the Stones always put on a great show and 9 out of 10 festivals are shit with lousy performances and sound, who wants to watch a short Stones set and have to put up with a load of rubbish while you wait for the Stones.

In the Licks tour they played in a festival in Belgium, didn't they? I would love so much to see them in festivals. They would simply blow all the other bands out of the water, for many more people to eventually realize what the real deal is all about...

Why don't they play festivals?

Because festival sites suck, that's why !

There are lots of good festival sites. And there is a special atmosphere when the big names are on. I saw David Bowie at Quarts in Norway and the audience went bananas. I think Stones would turn the site upside down plus getting lots of new fans.

Probably because after being 4 hours late at Knebworth no one wants to take the insurance risk.

Festivals are for young people who like to stay on a field for 12 hours or 3 days getting more or less drunk and listening to dozens of bands they have never heard before. The Stones have made like 2-3 festival appearances during the past years and those shows are among the worst, because the crowd is not there for the Stones, they are there to drink and have fun and not really interested if the Stones do Sway or Shattered.

as opposed to the average 2005-2006 show where the crowd is there to see the 'legend' (or to be seen), spend a sizeable amount of the show at the bar or en route to and from the toilets, talk loudly to the person next to them throughout the quieter songs - and who are certainly not interested in anything but a certain 6-8 songs.

In reality, theres little difference these days. A 'festival' setlist for the well-heeled, with the main difference being that it's seated and more expensive.

Clever marketing!

Yeah, it was a (one day) festival for sure. Including the Simple minds and local heroes Clouseau among others. The Stones closed the festival.

More or less like most US audience on this tour, according to the reports I've read on this very website so far...

True but i still see it as a good way to play a relatively short warhorse show to a young crowd and win a lot of new fans. On the other hand i always like the idea that the Stones are something special to see so you have to go to a Stones only concert instead of just catching them because you wanted to see REM or Mettelica.

Because the Stones do their own festivals on their own stages, sometimes with some additional guests and opening acts.
And they do events like Super Bowl, and some "private" and charity shows, too.

Stones have created and now live in their own world ...
