So, the Brian Jones era was not truly legendary? The message I get here from many in this forum is that the 60's was this period/phase in which the Stones were growing as a band, but really did not come into their own (and become THE STONES) until Mick Taylor arrived. This belief, that the MT era constitutes the 'golden years', seems to be the concensus around here. I think this is a load of bullocks and I am sick of reading this crap. Let's get a couple things straight here:

1.)The Stones did not turn into a better band when MT arrived. By the time he arrived, the band had successfully withstood the challenge of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Kinks, the Who, the Animals, the Yardbirds, the Byrds, etc. for the better part of a decade. The Stones had already been a great band for years!

2.)When did the Stones have all those No. 1 hits? The 70's? The 80's?

3.)How were the MT Era Stones better as a live act, dare I ask? All the live boots from the 70's I've heard and observed feature one long MT guitar solo after another. All you see is Mick Jagger as the others (even Keith!) are confined to the rear of the stage. I actually believe the Brian Era Stones were a lot more entertaining to watch and listen to. Their live performances at the '64 TAMI Show, '64-'65 Pollwiners Concerts at Wembley, and Ed Sullivan Show come immediately to mind. The Stones, I felt, played great as a unit back then and were a formidable live band in their own right. In fact, their legendary reputation in the beginning was founded on their electrifying live shows at the Marquee and Crawdaddy Club. Oh wait . . . is that another six minute MT solo I hear? Or could it be Santana?

Neptune,

Don't know where your head is??

Why do you think Jagger & Richards dumped Brian?? He couldn't cut it live
anymore, they thought they were blown away by the Who in R&R Circus!! that's
why it didn't get released until just a few years ago. And it's not just
Taylor soloing, it's his guitar "adding" to the Stones sound that made them
#1 or put them in that "golden" era!!!! Open your ears!!!!

Ill agree with that.

Also, Taylor played on 3 of their best albums: LIB, SF, and EOMS, and to a lesser extent, GHS. It was a good style for the time, and now Ronnie is here, and he fits into the current stones playing mode.

Despite what some people think, Taylor was an important part of the stones, whatever happens.

I've always loved the Hyde Park concert, perhaps especially Keith's guitar on I'm yours and I'm hers - that's rock!

Pardon, but you misunderstood me. I meant that the Jones/Taylor years were the legendary era, not only the Taylor years.
Why do you use such bad language? A discussion lives from counterpoints, which however should be exchanged fairly.

certainly ranks as their most "interesting" show ever, IMO. I happen to love it - warts and all.

Sorry, I thought you were overlooking the 60's era. I misinterpreted your post. I guess I was attacking the consensus and false belief that the early 70's was the Stones' golden era. Cheers!

Did Mick and Keith dump Brian? Brian stopped showing up at the studio for at least a year. Who dumped who?

My ears are open, and I'm yet again hearing another boring, seven minute guitar solo from some session musician (could it be Santana?) hiding in the back of the stage.

This is one of my all time favorite discs..period. I'm Hers, Mercy, Satisfaction, No Expectations, HTW!!

The sound is just pure nasty. I lov it. Keith's guitar nevr sounded better...to me. The "new" Mick emerged. I beleiv they solidified themselves as the best rock act after that show.

I will be burning a CD-Rs of this show in the next week or 2. Email me if you want a copy to trade or just for a future draft pick.

hyde park is a fiasco, i think : their guitars were standing in an

air conditionned place, and when they went out they totally went out of tune

because of the heat !!

look at the deseperate jagger who tries to find the pitch between the two

guitars during Sympathy , listen to keith when he plays satisfaction, never

heard a so-out of tune guitar during a concert ...

yeah, in hyde park, the stones are totally rusted : they haven't played live

since more than a year.

the funiest is the butterflies : most of them died in the boxes because of the

heat, so only a little hundred of them flew around jagger...

hopefully they played really well during the tour

Hyde Park is The Stones Concert . Not musically, but for History. For people of my generation, it meant They were Back. Among the flower power move, they remember that Rock was in and that they were the banner. After a long period of doubt and uncertainty. It was a peculiar day too. Six Stones on Stage. Who cannot remind of Mick reading those verses. A sunny afternoon in the Park....All those images of them arriving in an armoured Brink-alike van, the rehearsal btw Keith and Taylor in the caravan, SFD ....It was also a turning point as it shut the door to those years of Beatlemania and Stonemania. Maybe it is that day they became conscious that they really have to play in front of audience. Maybe Rio is the end of the road for that kind of Stones event .

Hyde Park is interesting to watch from a historical perspective, but probably their worst concert ever, musically. Would like to know what Keith is grinning about throughout, when his bandmate just died.
And yes, Ya-yas is one of my fave stones albums.

I haven't seen this movie in about 20 years. My old video store used to have it. I don't know why the bastard didn't just give it to me, I rented it enough times.

Anyway, the quality of that was really terrible, but it was amazing to watch it. Mercy Mercy is my favorite from that show. I bought a copy of the show on audiotape somewhere and I do listen to that a lot in the car. It's so crazy to hear them talking about doing a "new" songs, and the new song is from Let It Bleed. I just love that!

Poor Brian though. I always was a little bummed out that they didn't post-pone, I'm sure logistically it would've been a mess, but at that point, they could already pretty much do whatever they wanted so I don't know...

Anyway, does anyone know the story about why picked Adonais. Was he a big Shelly fan, or was that a Marianne thing. I also wonder why he picked those verses, the poem is actually REALLY long and there are some other verses that might've worked better. Still, it's a nice moment. Ok, I admit it, I memorized this poem (at least the part Mick uses) has anyone else done that?

I have this concert on VHS - The Stones In The Park. I like it despite it's "quirkiness". Very much a documentary more then an actual concert with back stage scenes and Marianne Faithfull with her son Nicholas. And the out of tune guitars? I love it! They sounded cool IMO. Especially loved hearing Street Fighting Man sounding really menacing. It may not be their best musically, but it truly is historical. smiling smiley

... if the entire show were available on video/DVD that's what we'd be talking about, i promise.
but there's just this beautiful but incomplete footage, and the audio of the whole Stones performance.

Love the pic with the Hiwatt amps in the background. I know it's not a funny subject, but those pups are loud, the adline with the pic could read: "Hiwatt amps, choice of the future hearing-impaired." And there is my namesake, a spritely looking Mick with his Gibson SG. Little did he know Mick J. would require him to wear outlandish outfits as he did himself that day, sporting the medieval Shakespearean town crier tunic.
