Stu. The piano player on the original Rocket 88 was Ike Turner.

Isn't there some discussion as to Rocket 88 being THE first rock-n-roll song?

Yes, Rocket 88 is usually considered the first rock n roll song. Before that, there are links to Chuck Berry's music all over the place in the recordings of Louis Jordan. But there are recordings of black music in the Twenties where you can find the beginnings of rock n roll. Probably before the Twenties, but there are no recordings, of course.

I like Ike Turner & King of Rhythm's version from "Here and Now".

That may have been the best album to come out that year...outstanding record. I think David Byrne's "look into the eyeball" & Jaggers last effort also came out that year. Sadly Byrne/Turner don't sell millions of records, so they get no consideration for such awards...than again...the grammys have sucked ever since I can remember so it's no big surprise.

Yep, there was a real study about the first rock and roll song ever. Rocket 88 was voted the 1st. Ike claims he wrote it in the car on the way to the studio.
