The Rolling Stones To Axe 'Sexually Explicit' Songs In China
After government pressure...

by Scott Colothan on 3/1/2006

The Rolling Stones have been forced to axe four songs from their upcoming China show as they are too sexually explicit for the country.

Reports claim that China’s Ministry for Culture deemed that four songs weren’t acceptable for the landmark event.

The wrinkly rockers won’t be able to play ‘Brown Sugar’, ‘Honky Tonk Woman’, ‘Beast of Burden’ and ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’ at the show.

Strangely, it seems that ‘Satisfaction’ has been given the green light.

As reported earlier in the week, The Stones will be making their first appearance in China in Shanghai on April 8.

They were planning to play in 2003 but were forced to cancel with the outbreak of Sars.

That's sad and yet understandable, NICOS. There's an old saying, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do," and so when in China, the Stones will have to do as the Chinese do. Which pretty much means bowing down to an oppressive government.

Right, Mandu?

yeah - we went thru this 3 years ago already. You'd think Ed Sullivan was the Chinese Premier or something....

It'll be interesting to see what they do play instead of these war horses.
Lucky Chinese in a way.

Good one NICOS...I meant to say earlier, "Thanks for sharing."

This could be the only way we get them to mix up the set list. Too bad I can't make it to China for the shows.

Stray Cat Blues might replace Beast Of Burden. It's much more friendly.

I wish the U.S. government would ban all the warhorses from the set. That would be some censorship I could get behind!

Well at least, the Stones will realize an old dream.. play in mainland China. Too bad, they can not perform in Beijing and Guanzhou. Many Great performers went to those cities but I think it is better than nothing. Now, we can say they went ALMOST everywhere. Thailand, Dubai, Chile and Malaysia are still not on their list. Perhaps, they will have to try again next tour!

Wonder why they haven't played Bangkok (Thailand), that would work out well I think. As far as China I have to totally agree with Lukester's first comment - oppressive government is right. Was there a few years ago and didn't get into it at all - one of the few places I won't go back to (unless it was free). On the other hand have been to Hong Kong many times and that place totally rocks. Maybe at the show in China they can do "Some Girls" with that line about "Chinese girls"...that should get a few of the censors thrown in jail for a decade or 2....It ain't all bad though, they have WAL MARTS going up everywhere....

My first thought when i read it was why didn't they ban those songs. They probably didn't do any real good researche because those songs and Star Star and many other would also fall in the categorie of sexually explisit lyrics.

Cheers,
Wuudy

How are they going to be able to move onstage with their pants down on their knees?

Word on the street is that the research isn't that great. The gang in charge of song lyrics also has to keep tabs on all the thousands of sweat shops making sure all the WAL MART t-shirts and underwear orders are put together to specific specs not to mention serious time limits must be met (+ a bowl of rice and fish head for lunch)....who has time to read through Rock and Roll lyrics.....

The Stones changed one word of one song for the Ed Sullivan show - a long time ago....

Now, for a whole lot more $ than they ever made from Ed's show they are willing, (according to this report?) to agree NOT TO PLAY 4 entire songs from their concert in China - yes, $ talks.....

I am wondering where is the difference with superball censure. In any place in the world people must live with compromises, and political issues in a win win kind of relation. Giving a few to get a lot.
Nothing new...since so many years.

If I lived in China I would not care what they play just so they play. You must remember that China was and still is much worse than the old Soviet Block and as I am sure some of you know because you lived it it was really bad.Just be thankful that today the Stones can play so many places once forbidden,
