Charlie's drum rolls

I miss Charlie's drum rolls from the sixties particuarly on songs like Get Off Of My Cloud and Let's Spend The Night Together. I notice these days he never attempts to recreate them.

Charlie's drumming these days is weird. In the eighties, he got into a habit of hitting one stick harder than the other, creating a signature "BattaBattaBattaBattaBattaBatta" type sound (listen to 'Hang Fire' and 'Start Me Up' for classic examples of this).

Nowadays he hits more evenly, but perhaps with less feeling? He does a lot of tom-snare-tom fills, or one-handed whacking of the toms. A lot of those great old fills are replaced by kind of lackluster fills.

I have not heard the recent versions of Get Off My Cloud. Is he doing the rolls in that?

Oops... just re-read the original post and see my question was answered. Sorry. Interesting anyhow.

He is 64. I think his timing is still perfect, his feel is still great but it's a physical job and the limbs don't move as fast as they use to. I don't think he brings his left hand around from tom to floor tom on any rolls anymore.

I love his drumming and a high light for me has to be Ya Ya's.

Yeah he's great. But in a way it doesn't sound as "tight" as it did in 1989 and before that.

The best thing he's done in the past 25 years was the ending of "How Can I Stop"--beautiful--the album is worth it for that few seconds.

Yes, he doesn't bring around his left arm anymore but that is part of growing older as a musician: you find the most economic way of using your body. But I just saw a video of the Superbowl where Cgarlie throws literally his entire body into a fill. He rises up from the throne and dives into it. I don;t even see Motley Crue drummers hit it like that. Charlie is the coolest.

I like him on Monkey Man from Live Licks.

Especially in Ronnie's solo.

The drum rolls on "Get Off My Cloud" were my favorite part of any piece of music when I was a wee lad. They got me interested in the stones!

The songs aren't the greatest but listen to LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN and DRIVING TOO FAST...haven't heard anything like that since...ever.

Also LIVE???? has anybody seen the shows of this tour on this board?...the guy is playing great...take a look and listen to the TATTOO YOU tour and you'll know what I mean...he couldn't find the crash cymbal!

I am proud of the guy...I grew up with alot of friends who put Charlie down so bad...I would say "when is the last time you seen thousands of chicks move their asses and pull their shirts up for Neil Pert on TOM SAWYER????"....LOL!!!!!
The guy lays the beat that moves your feet!!!!

CC

See my thread called "many moons ago when I was young ....." in which I mention that one of the two first records I ever bought was Big Hits, High Tide & Green Grass". And THE SONG on there that absolutely sent me into orbit was "Cloud", because of this very drum roll that this thread is talking about. Absolute pure magic, and what a hook ? Got hooked in 1968 or whenever it was, and still here nearly 40 years later !

Yes, I remembering when I was just a kid. Found it very amusing to listen to that album song - playing it at 45 rpm!!!
