Perhaps you are right... He's in every magazine released in the UK, and when he was married to that broad, a few years ago, 1000s showed up in the streets. And his ears are too big.
It's just fame, without any talent, I haven't even heard him sing. Charles don't deserve what he has been getting.

Quite interesting all the bands and artists you mention. I see that nearly every big name is either under or overrated.
Most of them you mention I even liked at a certain time or still like the songs to hear. Anyway there are so many groups and musicians out there which would by far succeed the Stones or any other big band, but they just like to play and are not at the right place on the right time.
I have seen country bands in Canada which blew me off. I have seen Pink Floyd disappointing me most, but still it is a great band on recordings.
There is just so much good music around which we don't get because of all the shi.. on the air. That's what's overrated, but not the groups or artists themselves.

Madonna would probably be my number 1 , but here are some others,
who get too much praise and plaudits, for my taste:-

Solo Sting
Solo Paul Weller
Solo Rod Stewart
Prince
Nirvana
Madonna
The Eagles
The Clash
Coldplay
The Beastie Boys

Most overrated: U2, Springsteen, REM (nasal romantic whiners), Lou Reed, Eages, Jackson Brown, Grateful Dead, and the most overrated of all time ~~~~~~~~~~~~ MADONNA.

Most underrated: Mink Deville, Los Lobos, Texas Tornados

Pietro - good call on Los Lobos - probably the most undeservingly unheralded band ever. These guys have it ALL:

Killer shows with great, great covers
Fabulous albums on a regular basis (Kiko might be one of the top 10 all-timers)
Great lyricists
Two fabulous singers and three great guitarists

They appeal almost evenly to "rocker" fans and "jam band" fans.

Picasso

I hate to disagree with you, but Picasso is a real treasure in the history of painting. They might not appeal to you, but they were revolutionary, in such a way that it even had big influence on other arts than paintings. Because Picasso created his own terms, without any guiding-lines from past painters.
You didn't expect anyone to argue, did you ? smiling smiley

I was playing devil's advocate and being a contrary bastard.

Although I prefer Michaelangelo myself....

Put it this way, Leonard Cohen once described Bob Dylan as "The Picasso of Song". Change the words "Picasso" and "painting" to "Dylan" and "music" in your post above, and you've hit the nail on the head...

Honestly, I thought about that when I wrote it! I thought about ending it with a "....just like Bob Dylan", but I knew I don't have to do Dylan-commercials for you! I haven't heard that Cohen-quote, only "The Tower of Song", which is something else.

The quote about Dylan was in an interview, not a song, however.

Tower of Song is a good track. Cohen has a great sense of humour which so many people miss (only someone who sings like Laughin Len could croon "I was born with the gift of a golden voice). "Im Your Man" is a terrific album, although I prefer "The Future" which was the next one.

All this talking about underrated/overrated....Leonard Cohen is underrated I'd say. Lots of people haven't heard about him. I noticed in Wyman's book, he writes about the Isle Of Wight festival 1970. Not a word about Leonard Cohen. My favourite Cohen era is 68-73, the same years as Stones golden age.
Death of A Ladies Man, is slaughtered in rock-books, but I really like that one.
Gazza, have you heard the live album from 1979, Field Commander Cohen?
That's really something.
Dylan played "Hallelujah" at one concert. I wonder if it worked...

I saw Cohen on Roskilde in 1988. Very good indeed!!
But I prefer early material 1967-74.
Have ya read his book/poems? They´re even better than his lyrics.

Baboon, I tried reading Beautiful Loosers, but I didn't get it. I wasn't that good in English then. Perhaps I'll look it up again.

Gazza,

Most overrated Artist, and I use that word loosely.....Andy Warhol. All he did was @#$%& ouTline pictures and apply pastel colors.

His only saving grace is that he designed the Stones tounge logo, if I am not mistaken, and if that is so, that was his only original (and best) work, otherwise he traced pictures like a kid with a coloring book. @#$%& Looney that he was.

Milo, NYC
They've been outcasts all their lives

I vote for Bruce Springsteen as one of the most overrated artists, and U2 as one of the most overrated bands.

I never got the whole "Boss" thing....although I like several of his songs, I think Bruce is hyped by the adoring media because he's a left wing moonbat. Is Bruce singing in concert or is he taking a poop? I can't tell with the grimace on his face and the inaudible sounds coming from his mouth.

I saw U2 four times in the 80's...before they were U2. When they released "War" you could see them start to peak. They haven't had a good album since 1991. And Bono is such a bozo with all of his corny causes and speeches. Here's something he should try, how about singing great rock songs and then getting off stage when the music stops???????

"If you don't like Bruce Springsteen, you don't like music."
Joe Strummer said that.

Shade, agree 100% about U2. Regarding Springsteen, I respect him a lot, but I find many many of his songs really boring. Right now, I think the most overrated artists are Coldplay, with Radiohead close second.

Coldplay most overrated ever.
To list Prince as overrated is just idiotic. I can understand people not liking him, but he is overrated ONLY in his own mind nowadays.
Bruce IMO is totally overrated. Calpton, Sting and Oasis.
