Bassplayer I like you very much but I have to say your off base here to have said say Mick was nothing after leaving the Stones. It's too rather strong and detrimental to a great guitarist and musician.

hey Tod, I'd give my left arm for the song Claudine. I just watched a court tv special when she murdered spider. I don't own the song. I know you do. Hint, hint!

What is Powers Irish?
Listening to Let It Bleed--the SACD format--is the coolest thing--they really need to have their post '71 catalogue released in that format.
As for as this thread--I do not understand why every pro-MT opinion is labeled as "anti-Ronnie" or some how interpreted to be a shot at the '06 Stones. If you are going to compare them side by side, well then, yeah fine--but that is not how many of the MT discussions start.

Whisky - made by the folks that make Jameson - a little mellower than that fine brand.

No kidding. It's a sad thing when some of the sixties albums sound better than the seventies' ones.

It's 'cos your a newbie. You come to realize that the Ronnie crowd takes as an insult any comment even tangentially connected to him....
StonesTod--should have guessed it to be a whiskey.
If you do not have any of SACD ABKCO releases--do yourself a favor and get them--listen to them on headphones and be prepared for a real treat--I have Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Your Ya Yas out and The London Singles Collection (I view the Brian yrs as primarily them being a singles band). and ALL ARE SONICALLY INCREDIBLE.
Besides, here is where I can plug my all time favorite producer Jimmy Miller. Cranked up the intro of Gimme Shelter on SACD on the sounds just come whizzing out of the speakers--plus although, no whiskey--some of mother natures finest--gets you where you need to go.
Oh, I am WELL aware of the sensitivity of the "Ronnie" crowd--LOL

I first got into the band in '79-80 and some of the first things that really hooked me were the '78 shows I taped off King Biscuit Flower(or was it flour?) Hour--plus Capitol Theatre--I loved that stuff and still do. Plus, I LOVED Emotional Rescue and Tatto You, not to mention Some Girls. I also saw then for the first time in '81 and that tour will always be special to me.
I never really "wished" for MT to rejoin the band, because I just aceepted it as a given that Ronnie was the second guitar player and when I discovered the '77 outtakes about 5-6 yrs ago I played them non-stop for the better part of a year. That stuff and the '78 tour is my favorite Ronnie stuff--where he really added alot to the band's sound.
With ALL that understood, the MT period was, imo their best and not JUST cause of his playing, but he was something more then a guy who just played alot of solos.

Hey--Cheers to you, my friend!!
I knew I felt a kinship there!
Have a great nite--it's almost 1:00 am which in NY means it is time to get ready to go out--lol.
Actually, girlfriend is away this weekend, so I am listening to to all the great music, I don't get to hear when she is around--lol
StonesTod Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > funny - the wife is gone for the weekend - so I'm > imbibing a bit myself!
You know, you simply cannot pass up these types of opportunities when they present themselves!!
Actually, shouldn't slander my lovely girlfriend, she is more then understanding--besides an extremely talented singer.
However, there is no way should would have been up for something like 9 straight hrs of Stones--which is what I am working on here (As he cues up Sticky Fingers...........
9 hours, eh? been awhile since I was on a bender of that magnitude. current got the 7/30/89 Buddy Guy show - with guest SRV - now that's a helluva couple of guitar players!

No no--I have not been drinking for 9 hrs (not that I haven't been down that road, a time or two--lol). Been listening to one Stones disc after another for 9 hrs. Just a relaxing smoke tonite.

Stevie Ray is my favorite blues guitar player--hands down.
Now, I know some "purists" do not think he was a legitmate "blues" guitar player, but as BV might say, they can eat a banana or go for a swim. SRV was the genuine article.
StonesTod Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > i realize - i'm calling 9 staight stones hours a > "bender"
Oh.....Yeah, it is funny with the Stones (actually Zeepelin and VH too) when I listen to them it tends to be "exclusively". Strange, but I can literally go weeks where my personal listening (ie; iPod) is only Stones.
NICOS Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Maybe that's the problem he tried to copied them, > I think he should used his own style of playing. > > > By the way, I find him a good guitar player (but > not a player with his own sound)
Interesting point. Maybe he does try to copy them. We know he does that at times (CYHMK 2002-2003). Sometimes he doesn't (RJ - PURE Ronnie slide). All in all I like Ronnie the best. Neither Taylor nor Jones has ever been close to Wood when he was in his golden period (From the faces up to 1983). Wood even got a second golden period in the mid-nineties. I like that as much as the early Ronnie. See, he's much more of a rock guitarist than Taylor was (Taylor being very bluesy, which very much fitted the songs written by Mick 'n Keef at the time). I also love Ron more than Brian but that's just more to do with what style of playing I prefer listening to.
I'im a Ronnie lover and all I can say is that mick taylor was of course a great gitarist but... not for the stones... always doing his solo stuff on stage (dead flowers for example) I CANT listen to a complete boot from his periode because his solos are going on my nerves and that's it... But i'm also playing guitar and i know his great even if i dont like him with the stones... the only song i really can listen to is ...MR from brussels 1973...
Well that's my opinion everybody can share his opinion that's why we call this a forum :-)
Bye
Stilllife87 see you in barcelona, paris,(st petersbrg), brno, vienna, milan, nurnberg, leipzig, frankfurt, munich, nice....
Ya Yas is the total testimony to master weaving a la Richards/Taylor. Shared leads. Interlocking rhythm guitars. It's never been better.
Taylor went more into lead role and Keith into Rhythm mode in subsequent tours, until by '73 Taylor was mainly lead and Richards mainly Rhythm. They concentraed on their strengths. It was the fashion at the time to have flash lead guitarists. It was de riguer to perform like this in '73. And stones did best by far. But Taylor can, and always has been able to, play sharp raunchy rhythm. He just now gets labelled from his '73 style. They gave him the spotlight more and more from 69 to 73.
It also allowed us to get the best rhythm playing EVER out of Keith. So be grateful for Taylor? (who is actually a very 'sympatique' guitar palyer.
Even today Taylor prefers to play with another guitarist. He's not an egomaniac solo queen ............ but he does happen to be rather talented in that genre.
personally, even before Ronnie joined, I was anxious that he and Keith were TOO similar in approach, (I dug the Faces too). They've created many nice textures on record in spite of this....... but often these days live it's just a mess and the guitars don't compliment each other at all - quite the opposite. SFM was good on Live Licks - but as for much of the rest Ronnie might as well not be there. His solo on CYHMK there is sheer agony to listen to.
