Is this the Greatest Live Album of All Time.....
Posted by: BornOnTheBayou ()

Is Derek and Dominoes Live at the Fillmore the greatest piece of recorded live music in the history of modern rock ???

Get Yer Ya Yas Out, Dylan Albert Hall '66, and The Grateful Dead notwithstanding, I've never heard anything better....

The bass on this is just unreal, let alone the lead guitar...

Carl Radle: my vote for the #1 most "unsung" rock bassist....

Made in Japan is great too, and I also really like "how the west was won" by Led Zeppelin. The last waltz is also great. Those were the days...and we are still waiting for the best one: ¿when will the stones release a 72/73 live album?. Like Jimmy Page has done with "how the west was won", they could do something similar with those tours.

The newly released Springsteen Hammersmith Odean from 1975 deserves mention here.

AT FILLMORE EAST - THE ONE AND ONLY ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND!!!

The Newest one - "One Way Out" isn't bad either - the version of Wasted Words smokes. I've got about 20 of the instant lives too from over the past three tours. Also great.

Allman Brothers all the way . .

But the Stones ain't bad either ;-)

Often mentioned in the US as some of the top live albums include:

The Who "Live at Leeds Deluxe Edition"

The Allman Brothers "Live at the Fillmore East"

Humble Pie "Rockin the Fillmore East"

Peter Frampton "Frampton Comes Alive"

Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963.

Not only the greatest live album of all time, but also one of the best albums of all time. This is what music is all about.

I'd vote for BRUSSELS AFFAIR, but another hot ticket is

Deep Purple MADE IN JAPAN (without the encores which are weak)
(I never listened the Derek and the Dominos live album)

One of the most unusual live albums is
Van Dyke Parks MOONLIGHTING - LIVE AT ASH GROVE

Do not forget
Van Morrison IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW
(I prefer the LIVE IN MONTREUX 1990 bootleg)

BB King's LIVE AT COOK COUNTY JAIL is also a classic, better than LIVE AT THE REGAL, but even here there are some great bootlegs (e.g. Montreux Jazz Festival 1991 & 1993)

And it's a shame that Fats Domino never released a real great live album but always remained below standard. He was a great performer with a crack band and at his peak could have released a classic.

Salt OTE,

How is that Van Morrision boot at Montreux?

I saw Fats Domino at the Jazz Festival in New Orleans before it became Atlantis, also saw Ray Charles there 2 hours earlier. Fats is great.

Anyone else own Derek & the Dominoes Live at the Fillmore ??

If not, make that your next purchase

There are partial previews of the tracks at the link above also...

One distinct difference between this album and many mentioned in the thread is that the average song length on here is probably 7 or 8 minutes, with several tunes 10 minutes or longer...

These are PRIMO extended versions of incredible Blues Rock songs... you won't find this level of musicianship in any other album I can think of...

been on a bit of a Dominoes spree myself of late, with several excellent torrents coming out recently, including shows with BB King and Duane himself guesting. Probably my favorite Clapton period/band

Amazing that a lot of bands produced their best live performances in the early 1970's - The Stones, Who, Led Zep, Deep Purple - dare I say even Elvis was at his best 'live' in 1972. Maybe all the competition that was around at the time made the difference and of course they had no technology to fall back on.

I've had the LP for years (Derek and Dominos that is) and liked it well enough but it has not ranked in my top list but after having read your extollation of its virtues I'll have to give it another listen. My favorites as mentioend here before were Get Yer Yer Yas Yas Out, The Who's Live At Leeds, Bob's Live atthe Royal Albert Hall and Live at Folsom Prison by Johhny Cash.

They certainly had "technology," just not the same technology. I don't doubt they could have had taped backup if they felt they needed it--they used it for tv shows. Probably some pop groups did perform live that way.
