I remember where it was, what car we drove, who I was with... I'm going to GUESS the year was 1971 for the Airplane, probably 73 for Hot Tuna.

Cool ... '71 would have been without Marty Balin but with David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service). And of course they still had Grace and Paul and Jorma and Jack. Have you seen the DVD that came out a few years ago? Lots of great vintage live stuff!

Name one bass line of Darryl's...

...that stands out.

Or surprises you.

Or swings.

Or hits the solar plexus.

Or has a unique sound.

Or hits a groove that says I understand the Stones...

Or adds to the internal tension of the band.

I'm still waiting.

Darryl is a session player that might as well be a loop playback.

Bill was brilliant.

My choice for best bass player who is not Wyman? Stu Cook.

I thought I was the only Stu Cook fan on the board... everytime I mention him I get relentless flames...

I think he'd be great with the Stones, got alot of attitude...

But not going to say he's a better player than Daryl Jones.

As for just a few of the memorable Daryl lines:

Wild Horses... he's got a brilliant soft touch on this... listen to Stripped.

Not Fade Away... when he kicks in after "i'm gonna tell you how it's gonna be..." the stadiums just shake, love it.

Jumpin' Jack Flash... he just nails this song. When Ronnie and Keith are in the mood Daryl helps 'em take this song to the next level.

Rain Fall Down... great funky interpretation really shines live.

But the main thing he does is just PLAY CONSISTENTLY, provide a solid rhythm backbone and NOT get in the way or try and overpower the song.

You sound like the guy doesn't have any redeeming qualities.

Winter,

Glad to see I'm not the only one who said Geddy Lee. I'm surprised that someone with ONNYA's knowledge would overlook such an outstanding musician.

- Darryl Jones
- Doug Wimbish (Living Color)

FWIW, I have this on-again, off-again running argument with a friend of mine who's an RHCP fan but swears that a guy named Les Claypool who played in Primus I believe, is a better bass player than flea...

I took a couple listens to Primus but didn't find their sound as accessible as the Chili Peppers and didn't take it any farther ....

Any Claypool fans in the house ??

Can I ask...

Where the hell is PAUL McCARTNEY???

He is for sure 100 better than Wyman ever was.

A truly original Bass-player, his lines are classic!!!

One of my favorites is Marcus Miller. Zappa had some great bass players in his bands as well. And the Level 42 dude, Mark King is very recognizable.

But how do you define 'best player ever' anyway?

Shifting to Jazz, my favourite player now is Avishai Cohen... terrific player and composer. Check him out if you get the chance!
