God, what a great tune! I had completly forgotten about! Man that guitar sound is just awsome, how in the hell does Keith get that sound? Is it tons of reverb or delay? (Man, if this song doesn't make you wanna drop your panties and shake what you got I'm not sure there's any rock 'n' roll in your bloodsmiling smiley

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

Ok, how do you create 'slap-back? (I would LOVE to hear this live!) What kind of guitar is he using? Sounds like a Gibson? Not sure., at least it sounds like humbuckers? Could be P-90's I guess, lol.

Agreed--great song.

I always thought it sounded like the Tele--remember
Keith has a humbucker in the bridge position.

I remember reading someplace (Bockris or Davis book)
that Keith used a "dub" mix on the end of the song--unfortunately
I am uncertain what that means--lol.

It always sounded like a delay set to very quick repeat
almost like a slapback---Little T & A always sounded similar to me
interms of a super quick delay.

In any event 2 great tunes.

Well you think I'm giving you the brush off

Well I'm just telling you to shove off

Hey! Let me go!

I still remember how that song defined Summer 1980 for me.

"The wonder of Jimi Hendrix was that he could stand up at all he was so pumped full of drugs." Patsy, Patsy Stone

Yeah, in 1980 I lived and breathed Rolling Stones 24/7.

About a week or two before the disc came out I was chilling out at home
when WNEW (NYC) shocked me b/c w/o warning they started playing select tracks of the "forthcoming" ER/ I threw a tape in and got Where The Boys Go, She's So Cold, Let Me Go, Send it To Me and Emotional Rescue, which I believe was already out.

Me and my friends spent the next several days driving around with our "exclusive" Stones tape and thought we were too cool for words. In those days
you did not know weeks in advance when something would come out and it made soo much more exciting.

Part of the reason ER will always hold a special place in my heart--plus I think it is a very underrated record but coming after Some Girls combined with the lack of a 1980 tour probably made it impossible not to be as successful. Plus I remember casual fans HATED the title track. These were the same sort of people that came back in a HUGE way with Start Me Up.

Fond memories when the world seemed much simpler.

i actually like the whole album, including the dorky song little indian girl...let me go and she's so cold are my favorites though - i remember when the album came out and the store "Venture" (a chain long out of business) had a large entire middle of the floor display for it. i was 12 and confused yet fascinated by the pictures on the album cover.

yeah, I'll admit it was the last GREAT Stones album for me. Loved every single note on it...faves being Where the Boys Go and Down in the Hole.

LET ME GO is one of my favorite Stones tunes EVER. ER is one of the first albums/cd's of the Stones that was given to me. I love the whole compilation.

Dunno wich guitar he used, but the slapback is 80 - 100 milliseconds of a delay.
cheapest stomp box will do.

At the end of Let Me Go you can hear Bobby Keys Playing the Sax but you only hear the begining of what he's playing before the song fades out. It would have been cool to have him play more on that song

I've enjoyed listening to the whole thing again too, (although the "where the girls all go" part in 'WTBG' is a little hard on me, lol) it's a fun recording. (It's been 20 some years probably since I've listened to it).

Thanks open-g for the slap-back info, I'll try and work that out, I've got a box in mind. Do you use compression when you play live?

I posted something about this on the "She's So Cold" thread and a
conversation I had with Dave Edmunds about getting a good rockabilly-Sun records sound. After wracking my brain, I seem to remember him mentioning -130 milliseconds,
give or take a few. And you can use it on vocals to get the Heartbreak Hotel sound.
Lennon used it just about everything.

Thanks Tom. I was listening to some Bo Diddley last night and it sounded like the 'whole' studio was soaked with either echo, or, delay. (Who says rock 'n' roll is dead? Not with the people on this website it ain't).

Quite right, tomk
you named it - give or take a few ms.
on the cheap delays you won't be able to accuratly dial the milliseconds, so you just go by ear.
depends on the beat - you'll hear it when its right.

> Rank:
"Do I use compression when I play live?"

well - um, err yeah, sometimes.
But I dont think thats a good question, I use it when i need it, or the song is in need of it.
Most - no probably all Stones songs can do without a compressor, I just happen to play some other stuff as well.
its good to know your pedal toys, but its even better to plug your guitar straight into your amp and come out with good results.
keep it lean, i would suggest.

I like it 'very' lean, just some nice natural distortion/overdrive. I only own one pedal, (Visual Sound, Jekyll & Hyde) and I seldom use it. I hate pedals!

On Let Me Go, there's about 10 guitars all edited together so there must be a P90 somewhere! On the 1981 tour, at the first dozen show he did play Let Me Go on a Les Paul Junior singlecut with a P90. At the first three shows he even fooled around with the MXR Delay, but that was thrown out immediatly.

I seem to recall Keith playing one of the Teles eventually on LMG live. I love LOVE the bridge in that song; that weird little count: "I find it hard to be cruel"...all the way to "you'll never find that prefect love that you read about..."
I think there is a mix on an outtake boot with more Sax on it.
The ER album was a bit of a letdown after the Some Girls party. I think "Dance" was just a terrible opener. yes, it is a complex tune and it does finally get moving. Took me until 03 to understand Keith and his fsacination with that song. It got alot better live. But as an album opener I thought it did what HTW did to their shows in 75. Put the brakes on when it should have been pedal to the metal. IMO if they had only revresed the two first cuts, the entire album would have had a different dynamic. On the ER album I find the Mesa Boogie trend taken to extremes. Too small, too dry, too much compression. Not enough melody, fun and sus4 chords.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

=====Yeah, in 1980 I lived and breathed Rolling Stones 24/7. =====

I'm glad there are those here who remember the summer of "80 with such good memories like us, Glass Slide and Mayfair. Emotional Rescue was a great way to spend that hot summer of my 18th year.

"Let Me Go" has that great "Freight Train/18 Wheeler" rhythm feel to it. Could listen to those guitars endlessly.

I think what hurt this record more then anything
was the lack of a tour--had they toured in 1980 I believe
this disc would be viewed through an entirely different prism.
There would have been far more of a buzz and alot more hype--especially
since by '80 Zeppelin had not played in the US in 3 yrs and it would be another 2 before the Who came back.

The other thing that might have changed it's perspective in my opinion
is if they had been able to add Claudine--what a killer outtake and imo
if they switched We Had It All for All About You.

Dance is a cool tune although, clearly it seemed to be Keith's fave
judging by the fact that he seemed to mention it alot in interviews. Have never
heard it live but can easily see where it has the potential to work really well.
I thought Keith and Ronnie got great guitar sounds on it.

I can't swear to it, but I saw them 3x on the '81 tour and I seem to remember
Keith playing a Tele--is this on LSTNT? That might be one way to tell
